## Renaissance Star Assessments Reviews
  ### 1. Great Progress Reports, but Repetitive Questions and Limited Skill Insights

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Primary/Secondary Education | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 30, 2026

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

There are a variety of reports, good for charting student progress and growth. Also good to provide a baseline for new students.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

Students report that questions are often repeated each time they take a test. Also the reports do not show specific skill students are missing in order to progress in a subject.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The assessments and reports fulfill the requirement for Federal Programs such as Title 1.

  ### 2. I love using Star to analyze student growth over time in order to direct my instruction.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lisa S. | Teacher, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 21, 2020

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

The most helpful tool for me at this time is the Star Early Literacy Assessment. I use this assessment to determine whether a student is showing deficiencies in phonemic awareness. I am the dyslexia specialist for the district and use the Star Early Literacy Assessment to determine which students could benefit from the Orton-Gillingham style of learning phonics.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I really wish that I could look at a students diagnostic reports and determine for certain the skills they are struggling with. I would like to know that a student is struggling with prepositions because he/she missed some questions pertaining to that concept. Currently, the student results are based upon their scaled scores.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Star Assessments have really helped me show the students how capable they are of growth. When their graph shows growth, the students tend to gain confidence, which you can see in their whole demeanor. Now that we are required to create RSPs for our students with weaknesses in reading, we use star to target areas of need, set goals, and monitor their progress. We use that information to create and update our Reading Success Plans periodically.

  ### 3. Star Assessments Review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Madelyn S. | Assistant Principal, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 05, 2024

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

What I like best about the Renaissance Star Assessments are their ease of protoring to students, their integration in working with other platforms, such as Freckle, as well as their engagement in keeping students interested in learning and testing. This assessment platform has helped us use the data we received to help personalize students' learning to help individualize their progress.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I have yet to find many downsides of Renaissance Star Assessments, the only I have encountered is there are sometimes some glitches in the testing sessions, but nothing major that can't be closed out and reloaded.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Renaissance Star Assessments are solving problems in not reaching students where their individuall needs are not being met. Their assessment results are broken down so specifically to standards of where the student excels and where the student needs extra assistance in. This is so beneficial to teachers in learning their students strengths and areas of concern so they can help them reach their full potential.

  ### 7. Star is amazing!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lynn C. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 26, 2024

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I love how after a student takes a simple test, that teachers can immediatelly see what reading level (or math) is best suited for their continued growth.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I wish that the test would have a timer on it that would not permit students to reun throughthe test too fast.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It saves so much time determining what level to place a student at.

  ### 8. STAR assessments are excellent

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shonda H. | Teacher, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 18, 2023

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I love the reports at the end. I am please with the amount of data and the break down of the data after a child tests. I feel like this makes my small reading groups run so smoothly and helps me plan for those.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I wish there was a way for teachers and facilitators to monitor ALL assessments at one time. I do find students will "Christmas tree" the answers and I always make them do it again.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This solves the problem of me having to "manually" assess and place all students into the correct reading groups. Not only that, it also gives me exact data on scores which help me to guide my student's work.

  ### 9. Make every student feel like a STAR!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Education Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 21, 2023

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

My favorite part of Renaissance Star Assessments is that they are made with every student in mind. The assessments make it easy for teachers to identify learning gaps and help students reach their learning goals.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

The only frustrating part of Renaissance Star Assessments is that I feel like there is not enough time in the day to utilize all the available resources. I wish that I had more time to learn everything available and how to utilize it in my classroom.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is solving the problem of finding out which state standards my students need me to work on most. Otherwise it would be almost impossible to figure out what they were still not understanding.

  ### 10. STAR is a good way of seeing their growth in the school year!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** KRISTEN D. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 17, 2023

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

STAR assessments are very accurate to their ability for the most part. The skills taught are all covered and when students are above/below average, they will meet their ability on the questions.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I really like STAR assessments. I do wish, however, that they did have questions read to kindergarten because most of the questions are too hard for them to read.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have not had any issues with the STAR assessments. I think that they are very active on fixing everything as it approaches. Great work!

  ### 11. Star Assessments Are Great

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dulce E. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 22, 2023

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I like that the Star Assessments adapt to the student as they are answering questions. Afterward there are different reports you can look at. It will also tell you the grade level where students should practice.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

Something I dislike is that when you don't pause the test correctly, students will have to begin the test from the beginning, which can be discouraging for them.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Star Renaissance is helping gain insightful information on students progress across grade level content.

  ### 12. Great tool for assessing students' reading needs and growth!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Melissa T. | Teacher, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 21, 2022

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

The Renaissance STAR Assessments are crucial to my ability to not only see students' reading needs as a whole class, but it is also crucial for seeing what individual students' needs are. A STAR Assessment helps me identify critical areas where a child may be struggling and how to best meet their needs in order to see growth.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

The program is easy to use and full of data. My only dislike is that I would like for there to be a way for students to log in and see their data and see their growth. I can show them the reports, but my students are mature enough that they want to know if they exceeded the last benchmark and have grown.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The biggest problems that STAR Assessments help me solve is knowing specific items to review with students who are not showing growth or who are showing very little growth. The STAR Student Instructional Planning report shows weaknesses and areas that can be focused on in order to help a student become a better reader.

STAR Assessments are used as benchmarks and progress monitoring for students' academic learning.

  ### 15. Great Data Reports

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Michelle S. | MTSS Specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 14, 2022

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I have experience with Star, Anet, and our curriculum's testing platforms. I like that Star is computer adaptive, questions adjust to each answer child's ability level. Teachers can grab data on most students. I also like the ease of accessing and interpreting student data. There are a variety of reports.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

Star isn't so good for students who have a scaled score above 1400. That affects a good number of our higher lrveled readers in the middle school and high school. As a result, it's hard to get reliable data on those students. Also, I wish there was better data report option for parents. The one provided isn't very helpful to parents who typically don't have an education background. The report doesn't really give a clearer understanding of how it is a student can improve his/her reading level.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

To solve the problem of testing students beyond a scaled score 1400, we are considering other reading test platforms. I have reached out to Star, and currently they do not have a solution for this problem. They say they are working on expanding their platform, but more shall be revealed.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Roxanne S. | Dean of Student Success, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 02, 2020

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

Renaissance STAR assessments offer amazing reports. Any information you need, whether you are a classroom teacher, specialist, or Admin, is available in at least one of the reports. They relate to CCSS, show learning targets and grade levels needed, time taken to complete the assessment, how they compare to others, and more.

The test is built in a great way for the students. Average time needed to accurately complete the exam is 15-20 minutes so test fatigue is combated. The test grows with the student, adjusting as needed.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

One thing I would adjust with the STAR assessment is the starting point. The next time a student takes the assessment it starts off at about the same place they finished - and that can be difficult for students. An example of this is a 4th grade student that took the math test scoring at an 8th grade level. They ended their assessment with square root problems they did not understand. The next test window, the student starts out with square root problems - after incorrectly answering some then it gets easier for them. This can cause some frustration for the student, especially if their score goes down.

**Recommendations to others considering Renaissance Star Assessments:**

STAR Assessments are a wonderful resource - the reports offer usable information and the assessment itself is easy for the student to navigate.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Renaissance STAR Assessments have really benefited our small group instruction. We are able to look not only at the STAR score, but also the instructional planning report to see where students weaknesses are and group them appropriately.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am helping my students understand what areas they need to focus on to develop their reading abilities.

  ### 26. Quick and Easy Assessment

  ### 28. STAR Helps Students Monitor Their Growth

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ann S. | Teacher, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 31, 2020

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

STAR is simple to use and accurate. It's nationally normed so we can see how we stack up against schools everywhere. STAR can be used for progress monitoring of students in intervention. There are very specific plans for increasing student learning that are generated by STAR.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

Success on STAR does not necessarily predict success on the state assessments. Although students who score well on STAR get higher scores on CAASPP, those who are at or just above grade level often don't achieve passing scores on the CAASP.

**Recommendations to others considering Renaissance Star Assessments:**

The reports can be tricky to master, but with a little experience they become invaluable.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is extremely important for students to learn to monitor their own growth. With STAR it's easy to see their rate of improvement. I especially love that the assessments are short enough to give regularly without undue stress or taking time from learning.

  ### 29. STAR Assessments Guide Instruction

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Renee G. | teacher, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 05, 2020

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

The most helpful aspect of STAR Assessments is the invaluable data it gives. I can pinpoint exactly where my students are in their journey to become a thriving reader. My favorite, and most used report, is the Instructional Planning Report for Students. This report suggests the skills the student is ready for instruction and practice with. I share this info with parents. A close 2nd to the report for students is the Instructional Planning Report - Class. This report provides a list of recommended skills, based on the most recent assessment, that groups of students would benefit from reviewing - perfect for small group planning.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I honestly can not think of a think I dislike about STAR.

**Recommendations to others considering Renaissance Star Assessments:**

I highly recommend Renaisance Star Assessments for educators who are looking for a tool to help students reach their highest potential. It is easy to use and helps to easily implement the data generated by the asssessments. Star assessments give a great return on investment.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am solving the problem of not enough time to plan for individualized instruction. I have realized many benefits, not the least of which is significant gains in student achievement. I like to give parents the Test Record Report. I take the date all the way back to Kindergarten to show where they started and how they grew over the years. This also allows parents to see that an occasional dip in data can happen sometimes. The scores at the end of each year are always higher than those of the beginning.

  ### 30. Most Useful Tool for Classroom Teachers

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kelsie H. | Teacher, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 28, 2020

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I like how straight forward all of the information is. You get a break down of the skills and they are placed in easy to understand levels of mastered, almost, and not yet ready for (I don't remember the exact verbiage). I also like that you can test as many times as you want, whenever you want. You don't have to wait for a time period that they are open or only be able to track progress from year to year or season to season.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I can't really think of anything I dislike.

**Recommendations to others considering Renaissance Star Assessments:**

Star 360 is great for students of all ages, grades, and abilities. It gives you real time information based on national standards and district achievements.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am better able to see where my students knowledge lies and what skills need to be gone back and reviewed.

  ### 31. Star Assessments Review (Middle School Opinion)

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jason E. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 31, 2020

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

Star Assessments does a good job of predicting how many of our students will perform on the state assessments at the end of the year. There are also great resources/links available that can assist in targeting needed areas of improvement if educators take advantage of them.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

Many of our students get tired of taking this assessment multiple times a year (which is needed to get accurate results).

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Star assessments to gauge student content knowledge. It is a good starting point to see where our students are so that we can plan how to get them to where they need to be. Generally, we see that projected growth models are accurate and use this information to target how educators will teach these students as the year progresses.

  ### 32. Renaissance Star Assessments

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I have been using the Star Assessments for 5 years now. I love that the test can be taken as many times as I want the students to take it. It gives a clear picture of the progress or declines that the students are making throughout the year. We have the students take the Star tests at the beginning of each quarter so it is a great tool to monitor their progress throughout the year.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I do not have anything that I dislike at this time.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am solving the problems of the students that are starting to slowly fall behind because it gives me a summary of what they are struggling with. I then can focus on those skills with that student.

  ### 33. Good product overall. Some hits and some misses.

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

Renaissance/Star360 has some very good features like quick testing time and a variety of quick, good, classroom level reports for teachers. Being a quick assessment, it leaves more time for student instruction and frees up the lab for other activities. It also has a variety of good, detailed classroom level reports; teachers can get the summary information and performance levels they need easily. It also interpolates the results to account for the exact testing date in relation to their norming study so the results are more accurate regardless of when the assessment is given. It also allows additional testing as progress monitoring for students that need more attention.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

There are a few things about Renaissance/Star360 that I dislike. One problem is that it does not keep records of previous students, even for the remainder of the current school year. If a student leaves the district, the RDI automatically takes them out of the entire Renaissance system. If I need scores to forward to their new district or if the State requires information on students who left the district during the school year it is a big pain. I have to constantly make and save exports, then if I need to retrieve the expunged information, I have to go to my external, huge, saved exports files and manually search through the csv files. Also, Renaissance/Star360 does not allow reports to be exported in any manipulable form (only in pdf, not as a csv file). The only export that can be done is a very large full export with none of the summaries the other reports provide. In addition, Renaissance/Star360 does not have functioning school wide grouping. Classes can be broken down into smaller sub-groups of a teacher's own students, but it is very difficult to make a larger school wide groups that crosses teachers and classes. When you do make groups, they are not available for student selection on most of the reports--only teachers and classes.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Finding out student performance levels, measuring their growth, and making predictions about student performance on the State assessments to target support where needed and address deficiencies.

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

Star Assessments provide detailed information on what skills and concepts a child is lacking in Reading and Math. It also provides strategies you could use to help the child reach grade-level, and they predict where they should be by the end of the school year.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

The only downside would be that they offer a variety of reports for the educators to use to diagnose the child that it sometimes get confusing which one to use and where it can be located on the website.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm able to get an accurate picture on what skills/concepts my students haven't fully mastered yet and develop lesson plans to teach them in a variety of different ways.

I like the grouping feature and also how it shows areas of weakness so you can address those areas.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

For some second graders, the test is a little lengthy. I typically have them break it up into a couple of testing sessions.

**What problems is Renaissance Star Assessments solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I mentioned it above. I like getting the reading range from the test. I see that as a benefit.

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Primary/Secondary Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 14, 2019

**What do you like best about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I like that the STAR 360 assessments are quick to administer. Students understand the process for completing a STAR test and aren't distracted by the test format. Each question is timed and therefore students aren't allowed to overthink or daydream while taking the test. The teacher dashboard provides a wealth of information for educators to use when checking student progress or when determining next steps for lessons.

**What do you dislike about Renaissance Star Assessments?**

I dislike how difficult it can be to mine the information out of the STAR 360 teacher dashboard. I can easily find the summary forms but to truly understand what the STAR is saying a student needs to work on can take a fair amount of time. Teaching is a busy job and I don't often have an hour to dig through the data.
