## Pilot Reviews
  ### 1. Pilot steered our accounting straight into the ground and destroyed our books

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Raj S. | CEO & Co-Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 07, 2020

**Describe the project or task Pilot helped with:**

Tax, R&D tax credit, accounting, and bookkeeping

**What do you like best about Pilot?**

Nothing. Steer clear of pilot. I wish I had something positive to say here, but I don't.

**What do you dislike about Pilot?**

Worst bookkeeping service we've ever experienced. They failed to properly recognize revenue. We sell hardware and software. The hardware is supposed to be recognized as revenue in the month it shipped. For an entire 18-months, they failed to follow this SOP, and it was an SOP they set. For the software, they failed to properly catergorize subscriptions. Thousands of transactions were misplaced into the wrong income accounts. They blamed this on a zap in zapier that they wrote to help automate some imports. They never disclosed the fact they were even using zapier at all. Anyone that ever uses Zapier knows that it needs to be managed. Not only did they not disclose that they were using Zapier to automate bookkeeping, but they didn't manage it and let their zap fail and miscategorize transactions for 18-months. They also incorrectly amoritized monthly subscriptions into daily subscriptions, and then also managed to get the math wrong. The founders are from MIT, yet they got the "count" in "accounting" wrong. We discovered our books were littered with journal entries and adjustments to make up for gross miscategorizations. This made the books unreadable and made it impossible to build any sort of financial KPI to understand the business. They promised to fix/clean up the books after we discovered these issues. Yet, they dragged on that process for months. Each time progress was made, someone would go on PTO. Then we'd discover that they didn't make any progress at all. Finally, we had no choice but to fire Pilot, three weeks before we were supposed to file taxes. Just a huge mess. They took our money for 18-months, messed up our books and financials, promised to fix them, and then failed to deliver on that promise. After several requests for a refund fell on deaf ears (they didn't even respond to our email requests), we've decided to start investigating our legal options. We've had to pay another bookkeeping service to step in and clean-up our books, hire a fractional CFO team to assist, and are now looking at IRS penalities for filling taxes late. The damages keep piling up. Don't let Pilot crash your company. Steer clear!

**Recommendations to others considering Pilot:**

Steer clear. Pilot is the worst possible custodian of your books. There are much better bookkeeping services out there, and although many are more expensive, the poor quality services you'll receive with Pilot will cost you a lot more!

**What problems is Pilot solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Pilot was hired to provide bookkeeping services. There services aimed at leveraging a combination of AI and experienced/qualified staff to help reduce costs and increase transparency. They did the exact opposite.

  ### 2. Would not recommend

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Describe the project or task Pilot helped with:**

I am an internal hire and have taken the accounting over from Pilot. They recorded everything on a cash basis and have very little backup for historical information. They cannot answer simple questions about AR and AP. This has made the audit and tax process very troublesome, and I would not recommend this service should a company plan to be around long enough to need internal accountants.

**What do you like best about Pilot?**

They respond to emails within 24-48 hours.

**What do you dislike about Pilot?**

They recorded everything on a cash basis and have very little backup for historical information. They cannot answer simple questions about AR and AP. This has made the audit and tax process very troublesome, and I would not recommend this service should a company plan to be around long enough to need internal accountants.

**Recommendations to others considering Pilot:**

Do your research when picking an outsourced accounting team. Ask about their knowledge of US GAAP.

My experience has specifically been reviewing deferred revenue, AR, expense classification and cutoff, and support for nature of expenses. Pilot did not properly record all of these transactions listed and cannot provide any detail for the rationale of why transactions were recorded the way that they were.

**What problems is Pilot solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Many outsourced accounting teams are not good and it's hard to find a reliable team. I don't think that Pilot is able to deliver on US GAAP accounting.

**Official Response from Waseem Daher:**

> Hi there—I'm Pilot's CEO. I'd really appreciate learning a bit more here so I can do the work to postmortem this/inform what process changes might be needed on our side, because this doesn't sound like it represents the experience of our average customer and I'd love to better understand what went wrong.

Would you mind shooting me a brief note at waseem@pilot.com?

Thanks!

  ### 3. Super shady pricing

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Real Estate | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 13, 2019

**Describe the project or task Pilot helped with:**

We were talking to their sales team to see what plan to go for and they kept on changing our prices.
They mentioned they would give us a discount and in the end we figured out it was a discount they offered anyone with our bank (so completely intransparent).
They knew from the beginning that our company had a subsidiary and they decided to last minute to add a $100/mon subsidiary charge even though this was never mentioned before.

**What do you like best about Pilot?**

To be honest I initially thought they were relatively professional. In the end they clearly weren't.

**What do you dislike about Pilot?**

Intransparent pricing.
We have written email quotes that do not match what they then told us over the phone.
Kept on changing their pricing.

**What problems is Pilot solving and how is that benefiting you?**

None, just spent tons of time on the phone with them and completely unsatisfied with their sales team.

**Official Response from Waseem Daher:**

> Hey, Pilot's CEO (Waseem) here.

First off, thank you for providing this feedback, and I'm really sorry (and disappointed) to hear that you didn't have a good experience with our sales team.

I totally get why your experience was a turn-off, and it would be for me too. I wanted to shed a little light on what's happening here. (This is 100% not an excuse—we fell short here, but I wanted to provide a little color as to why.)

One of the things we've spent a fair bit of time working on at PIlot is putting together flat-rate publicly-available website pricing, which we've done with Pilot Core.

The problem is, we historically haven't done a good job explaining which shapes of business fit into Pilot Core, and which shapes don't (and where we need to charge extra)—even to our own team.

In this specific case, even though the rep was aware of the subsidiary, they weren't aware (because of a failure in our own training) that we needed to charge extra for the subsidiary, and they only learned of that after talking with someone else on our team later in the process, which is why this ended up going down the way it did.

We're significantly retooling our training and process to manage this better, so that when we give you a number, it's actually correct and doesn't need revision.

Again, not at all an excuse: you had a bad experience with us, and I own that. I'm sorry we fell short here, and we're working hard to make this part of the process better. Thanks again for the feedback.
