**What do you like best about Paychex?**

I love that we have dedicated support across all different areas to make sure our needs are met and we have answers to any questions. I also love the payroll platform software, as it is easy to use and intuitive. The payroll automatic saves progress when you make changes so you don't lose any updates you have made, which has been very helpful. You can easily import payroll data and proceed to review. The payroll process is simplified, making it streamlined to upload payroll data, review, customize the layout, and edit changes easily.

Paychex keeps us up-to-date with the latest compliance and employment laws by sending out newsletter emails, assigning a dedicated Paychex HR specialist, and holding webinars. A dedicated payroll specialist addresses our payroll concerns, and a customer support advocate directs our questions and guides us through any confusion. Under the PEO platform, we utilize Paychex's group healthcare plan to provide cost-effective health benefits to our employees. The initial setup was very smooth, and we had no problems transitioning from Quickbooks.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

The onboarding process for Paychex could be improved, as we are charged for every employee we add to the system. This prevents us from directly onboarding a potential candidate as soon as they start, and instead we are having to wait until the employee actually starts and is about to be paid in order to add them and onboard them in the Paychex system. There used to be a separate onboarding system in Paychex but it was removed recently, potentially as an additional cost feature.

**What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Paychex streamlines our payroll process, offers cost-effective healthcare plans, keeps us updated on compliance laws with newsletters and webinars, and provides dedicated support for addressing payroll and HR concerns. Payroll is much easier to handle with multiple employees vs Quickbooks, as the software is more automated and performs at a larger scale.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

I really appreciate that Paychex takes care of doing our payroll and payroll taxes, making that paperwork way easier for us. One of my favorite things was having my own personal paycheck specialist for many years. We've used them for probably twenty plus years, and I valued having that personal touch. The initial setup was very easy.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

I think one of the worst things is we don't have a true dedicated payroll specialist that gets to know you and your work and your system and the way you do things. It's hard to talk to a new person each time or to email something and not get an answer for days. I think there's improvement in there.

**What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Paychex takes care of doing our payroll, payroll taxes, and manages our 401k, making the paperwork way easier and less burdensome for us to do.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

We have a great account manager who gets back to us right away and always has the needed answers. Their portal is very user friendly and they make doing payroll a breeze. I simply enter the hours each staff worked that pay period and any additional PTO/vacation hours, and Paychex does the rest.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

It would be nice to have a direct phone number to dial our account manager rather than calling the main line and having to be transferred.

**What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Paychex has really lightened our workload by calculating, collecting, and paying our quarterly taxes. I simply enter the hours worked, and it takes care of everything else—from deductions to direct deposits—so the process feels much more streamlined.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

The Time and Attendance feature supports time-off calendar integration and works well with both weekly and biweekly payroll cycles.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

The occasional turnaround time it takes to hear back from the benefits department when updating payroll deductions for terminated employees.

**What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It has streamlined our processes and record-keeping for payroll, employee HRIS, 401(K), and reporting for our small business of 15 employees. It’s also helping us stay within our annual budget for medical and ancillary benefits by offering lower costs, as if we were part of a larger employer group. The group coverage and benefits available help us remain competitive in the small-employer market while offering rich medical plans with lower deductibles at more affordable costs.

  ### 5. Intuitive Payroll Entry, But Reporting & Notifications Need Improvement

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

The payroll entry is easy to follow, and the employee information profile is easy to read and is intuitive which is great for when we have updates or new hires to enter.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

The Analytics & Reports are not intuitive at all; it is very difficult to find reports that I need or are helpful. There's not a lot of diversity or ability to refine each report; there is a lot of HR statistical information missing from the employee profiles so when we need to run annual reports for these, we have to manually enter the missing information each time for each employee. 

Reaching the dedicated Payroll rep has also been really difficult. While it is nice to have a dedicated Payroll rep, it often happens that when we call or email, there is no response because they are out of the office, resulting in poor response time. Calling the phone line for the next available rep seems to work most of the time. However, there are quite a lot of reps who do not seem to know or understand Payroll in detail, making it difficult to get our  questions answered. 

Flex updates: All of the recent system updates have been handled poorly in my opinion. Because there are no email notices sent regarding what has been changed or updated, I never know what has changed until I need something and time is of the essence. For example: there were recent updates to how we send our notices received from state and federal tax. No email correspondence was sent regarding this change. 

Flex Perks: There were also Paychex Flex Perks that were added without our knowledge or consent. These were made available to our employees and none of our executives or myself, received any email notices that these were a) being added or b) being automatically made available to our employees and c) that we would have to manually go into our Flex account to turn the Perks off. That is unacceptable and I don't understand why something would be made available to our employees that we did not have a chance to review and approve of before allowing to be made available to our employees.

The AI Help option is not helpful either. Every time I have used this feature to find answers on my own, the information provided is vague and almost every time it doesn't answer or address my question.

I have yet to experience this.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

I like Paychex for its excellent customer service department. I can easily reach someone on the phone to answer my questions, which is really helpful when I've made mistakes while entering payroll or get confused with the different I9 regulations. The representatives are always so helpful. I have also found Paychex useful in avoiding mistakes with payroll deductions and payroll tax miscalculations.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

I believe their platform could be a bit cumbersome and when you receive an error message it does not make clear where your mistake was made or how to correct.

We only use it for payroll and I can process it fast due to the fact that the site & software is easy to use. It was not hard to learn their process.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

I like that they send us the updated Federal & State employee law boards to post, but I don't think I get them all the time. It would be nice to have a notice in my messages, or an email sent that lets me know when I get updates.  I just may not know where, but if I could retrieve them from Paychex Flex, it would be great to get them when I need them or check to see if they have been updated.

I do not have one at this time they are working on it.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

The convenience of the paychex flex.  Its cloud based so we can enter data from our mobile phone or on the computer.  The app is super helpful and convenient so information can be entered right away.  We can check our payroll or retirement information very quickly and easily.  We can check our direct deposit to see when its completed and can submit payroll online.  Plus there is a live chat and 24/7 tech support.

Nothing really.  We have been customers of paychex for many years and have always been happy with our level of service received and their attention to us as their customer.

Time saving.  We are a small business and time is essential.  We need simplicity and ease.  Plus there are built in safeguards that help avoid problems or mistakes. Also, they contact us regularly for our payroll information.

It's easy to use for a small organization.  Very intuitive.  The help desk is always helpful when I run into any questions - which doesn't happen very often - but when setting up a new feature recently, I really appreciated their assistance..

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

The Time & Attendance module seems very disconnected from the payroll module.  The help desk people for both are seperate and not cross-trained.  It can be frustrating sometimes when you aren't sure where an issue is coming from.

Managing Payroll and Vacation/Sick time tracking.  I wouldn't be able to do it otherwise.  It's seamless and funning payroll only takes a few minutes.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

I like the employee onboarding process with Paychex. It has improved my opinion of the product because we can set everything up electronically and create the employees' paycheck accounts after they accept the position. This is all done before they start on their first day, making it much more efficient than our previous method of sending out physical packets. Having everything in one system, like our payroll and time clock, is a great benefit. It reduces the manual work involved in payroll, cutting the time needed from a few days to just an hour or two, and increases transparency for PTO tracking. Paychex also helps keep our important documents housed in one location, making it easier to send updates to staff and track incident reporting. Overall, it's nice to have all these functionalities in one place instead of using multiple platforms.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

I think the implementation or creation of things to include for each employee could be grouped together a little bit easier. There's somewhat of a manual component that could be streamlined or built a little bit better. The setup was a bit challenging because of disjointed portions in the onboarding, and different departments weren't sure how to handle things beyond their part. This made figuring out issues complicated.

Paychex integrates our time clock and payroll into one system, reducing manual processes and saving significant time. It enhances transparency in PTO management, schedules state-required trainings, centralizes document management, and tracks incidents, all in one platform.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

I like that Paychex doesn't require a fixed contract. The employee self-service options are decent, if not robust. It's pretty easy for employees to use.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

I've used 5 different payroll systems/HRIS and Paychex has the most limitations. It isn't the worst system I've ever used, but the worst system I've used set a pretty low bar. Capabilities that I would have considered to be standard are impossible for them. The leave tracking capabilities are awful. The customer service is good but unfortunately they have no real solutions for the problems we experience. There are limitations on approval workflow for employee leave. The system can only accommodate one workflow. PTO gets approved the same way as jury duty, bereavement, or statutory leaves, which doesn't work for different types of approvals needed. It doesn't allow you to attach a document to a time off request. The schedule feature doesn't export to Outlook, making it basically useless. The user experience/layout of employee data doesn't make sense the way it's segmented. Timecard changes are a nightmare. We use Employee Navigator, but we can't connect it to Paychex because it shows incorrect pay data. We are a school, so our employees don't work 12 months, they work 10. Paychex can't factor that in when calculating employee pay, leading to incorrect compensation information and no fix, only a workaround.

Paychex Flex handles payroll and offers decent employee self-service without a fixed contract. It's easy for employees to use.

With so many services, it can be difficult to understand all that Paychex has to offer, but they do have a lot of resources to help us learn more.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

It has the basics we need when it comes to payroll and onboarding. It generally isn't hard to find features. There's customer support through both chat and phone. It's reasonably priced given it's features.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

It doesn't feel like a modern system. It's interface feels a bit dated. Some of it's onboarding features are not easy to use, such as assigning documents for signing. It does periodically update features, but I feel it's performance is lacking compared to other payroll services I've used.

Now I can fix some problems myself in the flex app. dont use any of the other services Paychex offers cuz we are small company but I am sure they have added a bunch of stuff.

Showed me how to set up my own reports in Paychexflex app. now I dont feel they need to improve anything.

payroll tax payments , I dont have to learn payroll taxes and who to pay when
also my workers comp reports, helps so I can report my employees hours to workers comp. insurance company accuratly and easily
keeps track of PTO, so I dont have to.

That it made my job easier working payroll for my company, it still does now that I moved to HR, but everything is just great, a great experience because they do my job secure, effective and accurate. Even if they are  mistakes, we can fix them and they assist what comes later, after processing Payroll and beyond.

Not be able to create the reports I want and the pricing going up every year.

Now, I believe they are negotiating their pricing, because we received an offer. But they usually end up on a good deal.

I like having one place to go for all the information that I need, especially for tax season or understanding benefit packages. It's helpful not just for me, but for other users too, to have everything done in one place. The initial setup was smooth and simple, making it easy to get started.

I feel like we don't utilize everything Paychex has to offer because we don't really know what we don't know. I think we could use more guidance on how to best use the platform from an overall customer success perspective.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

I like having everything in one place. Payroll, time clock, onboarding, safety videos, benefits, and 401 (k). It's user-friendly and offers many training videos/support.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

They are very disconnected, especially from Flex to the PEO. Support is hit or miss. You can get someone great or terrible. It's time-consuming to get the help that you need. Billing is messy and not transparent. Making you feel like they are trying to hide charges. The training program needs more work. The platform can be confusing when linking it to the onboarding.

**What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I like that I can send employees to their accounts to handle things themselves and get help directly from Paychex.
Again, having everything in one spot makes things more efficient.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

Paychex was an easy platform to use, and it also came at a low price point. The timekeeping portion was straightforward and easy to use as well. I used the reporting function quite often which was simple enough.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

The learning module didn’t always work as needed. Support wasn’t very strong, and at one point I was completely locked out of the system. The reporting feature was easy to use, but the reports weren’t customizable. The performance process felt very limited, and once it was closed or a deadline was missed, there was no way to go back. The onboarding module wasn’t intuitive and sometimes wouldn’t function properly. There were also many complaints from employees that the system was hard to navigate.

Paychex brings everything into one platform by integrating payroll, HR, benefits, and workforce management. It didn’t always work the way I needed it to, but it was still nice having everything together in one place.

I use Paychex for its payroll processing and to access my paycheck, and I appreciate how it streamlines payroll and keeps things in one place. The user experience is strong, with an intuitive design that makes HR tasks easy to navigate. I find it user-friendly, which helps reduce errors and saves time. I rely on their reasonably good customer support when needed.

I find the limited customization frustrating. Customer support can be difficult because I have to go through an assigned agent for my account, which isn't always convenient. They also have slow response times during peak periods. The pricing is high for small businesses like mine.

Paychex seamlessly calculates taxes, 401k contributions, and deductions. It handles direct deposits and offers strong reporting that adds transparency. The employee portal is also great for accessing pay stubs and W-2s, as well as making demographic changes.

Integrations have been challenging. We’ve been with Paychex for about seven months and still haven’t been able to integrate with our 401k provider.

Support for benefit offerings is only available via email, and responses have been slow, which has delayed getting issues resolved.

We ran into an issue with our previous payroll provider not submitting FUTA, and they helped us identify the problem and remit the taxes on our behalf. It would have been difficult to navigate this on our own.

**What do you like best about Paychex?**

The Paychex system was acceptable but a little dated. I wanted to add timekeeping my payroll contact could nto tell me how much it would cost. They referred me to their sales team told me it could takee 5-10 business days and I never heard back.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

We started using Paychex in January 2024. From the beginning, response times have been consistently slow and unreliable. In some cases, we were told upfront that requests could take up to 15 business days to process. In others, we were quoted 1–3 business days, only for the issue to drag on for more than a week. Multiple times, after waiting, we were then told that the request had been sent to the wrong department and needed to be rerouted...and the clock starts over.

We have experienced multiple payroll issues. On several occasions, payroll has been completely stopped because a new employee was coded incorrectly in their system. It took three full payroll cycles to resolve one issue, and each time payroll was halted until it was addressed.

In one particularly serious incident, all of our employees’ direct deposit information was wiped out without notice, and payroll was converted to paper checks. We caught the issue before processing, but it required every employee to reenter their banking information, and payroll ended up being delayed.

Nearly 60 days later, those same checks were mailed out to employees. We reported it and were told that the paper checks generated during that error had been voided and that no further action was needed.

Then about 30 days after that, we received notice that Paychex intended to debit our bank account because some of those supposedly voided checks had been cashed. We were told that we would be responsible for collecting those funds back from employees, despite having reported the issue immediately and being assured the checks were void.

There have also been compliance and structural issues with how services are handled. Although we have a contract for PEO services, we discovered that Paychex had not registered as a PEO in our home state. Instead, they filed under a power of attorney, meaning filings were made under our EIN rather than theirs, which created additional complications. In other situations, they sent notices to other states indicating they were no longer our PEO while still under contract with us.

This only scratches the surface of the issues we’ve had.

We are actually waiting on them to resolve issues...and we may end up just paying the the fees that should have been paid correctly by them in the first place. I've spent too much time cycling in emails trying to get someone in Paychex to actually take care of a timely issue.

I dislike the lack of knowledge, being passed around and not getting serious issued addressed.  Payroll errors are not resolved and there is no accountability by any support person (or manager).

Paychex has actually cost me (small business owner) considerable time and money in trying to resolve discrepancies between Paychex payroll team (where the errors and lack of communication and constantly changing "dedicated account reps"  are taking place) and our Benefits administrators.  This has caused inaccurate payroll, inaccurate W-2s, over billing for benefits and service fees and inaccurate medical coverage for our employees.  Its been a disaster and I would not recommend Paychex to anyone.

Paychex makes it easy for me to clock in and out of my virtual education job. It is a requirement that I implement it when I am working any of my shifts. I use it daily, as I work every single day (even though only part-time). It seems to have the right amount of features, and I'm not sure if it would need more. It has been very easy to integrate into my regular routine. Typically, when there is an issue, I either reach out to my HR or they reach out to me. Because of this, I have not had to use customer support.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

Paychex has a tendency to fail to accurately record clock-ins or outs on random days. This results in my HR contacting me to clarify what time I finished my shift, despite the fact that I did, indeed, complete the task. It is very frustrating and adds more work than either of us needs.

The primary benefit of Paychex is being able to easily clock in and out of my shifts, as well as easily being able to access my time logs and tax documents each year.

I really appreciate the support team at Paychex. We've had three different acquisitions this year, and the support team has been extremely great in helping us implement Paychex for each new facility we've acquired. Their support is nonstop; they've seen us through the first payroll of every facility to ensure everything is running smoothly. We have weekly calls with them, and their hands-on support is really appreciated.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

The time clocks. I think our biggest issue is time clocks. A lot of times, they just don't work properly. We have experienced a lot of camera issues with the time clock that we're using, where they kinda just fail and, decide to stop working. So I think that would be a big area of improvement for us.

**What problems is Paychex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Paychex helps us track time and attendance, meal break penalties, overtime, and double time. It ensures accurate employee payouts and defends against PAGA claims. It also tracks employee personal information.

I've had a lot of issues with our 401(k) plan after plan mergers, including interrupted distributions for former employees without warning. Paychex treated withdrawals of pretax and Roth contributions as taxable. The integration between payroll and time & attendance modules is minimal; managers and employment status must be set separately in each. During open enrollment, Paychex prematurely starts HSA employer contributions despite the benefits year not beginning, causing issues for employees switching plans. The Flock module managing benefits doesn't communicate with the PBA module for FSAs and HSAs, lacking necessary checks when transitioning between health plans. The initial setup was tough due to having different contacts for each module, and they failed to set up our COBRA properly as discussed.

Paychex doesn't solve problems and instead creates them, especially with 401(k) and integration issues between modules like payroll and time & attendance.

During the Covid 19 pandemic, Paychex kept up with the new laws and helped my company stay aflote. They helped with PPP funding sources that would actually work with our compnay. They also held webinars where they explained how we could use both ERC and PPP funds together. They were able to help keep my company alive.

They are great. The only bad thing is they offend have high turn over.

They have expertise in so many areas, but it always feels that when they want to educate you, they are only doing it to sell you a new product, rather than doing it because you are a current client. - same as my last review.

I like tracking vacation in Paychex. The requesting of days off works very well.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

The customer service and setting up payroll correctly. Customer service seemed to enter things incorrectly frequently. They were not very helpful in setting up our payroll.

The ability to administer time and attendance, payroll, and several HR benefits in one consolidated place.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

That sometimes I dont know what the charges are that hit our business account. We dont always get an invoice for some of the charges, or they dont match our tax liabilities report.

It helped us create our first-ever employee handbook, to be compliant for employees across 9 different states.

I find Paychex user-friendly, which saves me time and allows me to navigate on my own. I also appreciate the employee training feature. The setup was very easy, making it convenient to get started.

I use Paychex to easily apply taxes, manage contributions, and handle PTO. It's user-friendly, saving time and letting me navigate on my own, plus it offers helpful employee training.

I love how user-friendly it is, and how easily new hires are able to navigate it.

The updates keep changing how we’re used to doing things. For example, the new time cards aren’t as good as the old ones, and every time I’m in Time and Attendance I have to switch back to the old timecards.

Paychex has made filing taxes a breeze as they take care of all the filings for me now

Ease of getting through payroll without issues as our payroll tends to be same from pay period to pay period

Sometimes when I need to modify payroll, it may take two or more sessions with out of country agents to accomplish what I need.

My time is valuable and when I can order payroll in less than two minutes - thats great!

Theres a lot more to the program than when my previous review was done but I continue to use it the same as my needs have not changed.

It can still be a little cumbersome but now it's because of new features that I haven't gotten the hang of.

I used to have to do payroll manually in excel and google sheets there were too many mistakes being made as well as inaccurate information causing issues.

  ### 50. Regret Switching to Paychex: Poor Support, High Turnover, and Costly Mistakes

Smooth talking sales people.  Don't be fooled to switch over - they don't live up to the hype.

**What do you dislike about Paychex?**

We moved our Co payroll from ADP to Paychex 3rd Qtr 2024.   Paychex has FAILED to file quarterly reports and now the EDD is sending a Notice of Intent to Lien.  We have been assessed thousands of dollars in penalties because of this.  Last year upon receiving my first Notice, I worked with Paychex rep who said she would take care of it...long story short, I went through 6 reps (none of whom still work at Paychex - emails keep bouncing back) and signed 5 power of attorneys and it still isn't corrected.

Yesterday the Tax Dept (PAC) opened a case and closed it saying it was taken care of - ummmm not true.  The Tax Dept conveniently doesn't have a phone number to call.  They refer me to my Account Specialist who doesn't even have viewing access to info on my "tax case/resolution".  I forwarded the tax dept emails and they bounced back.

Lack of follow up due to high turnover within the company and/or lack of caring, is costing me time, money and my sanity.

Seriously - do not sign up for Paychex - consider ADP - I was lured over and now regret it.

Emails bounce back - no phone numbers for key personnel and oh, one more thing - their main number goes to an offshore call center who also pass you around like a beach ball.

BEWARE!

Paychex doesn't solve problems but creates them.   When they say a problem is solved - it isn't.  I have been dealing with them paying my payroll taxes incorrectly for 14 months now.  Noone is accountable.  HIGH turn over.  Good luck!
