Does not know what they are doing! **Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Accounting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** October 29, 2025 **What do you like best about Patriot Software?** Pricing is attractive, They promise nice employee features **What do you dislike about Patriot Software?** In our experience as a company providing payroll services to our customers, Patriot was an attractive option switching from Intuit, but as the process continued, Patriot continued to throw up hurdle after hurdle in front of all of our clients as we attempted to switch from Intuit over to Patriot. Even after we provided person letters from the owners with copies of their driver's licenses and Patriot was able to validate the existence of their businesses, even then Patriot refused to validate our clients with lots of excuses around every corner. Patriot uses a hands-off style of support with least-effort approach. you'll get an email from a support person that says one thing, you'll call and get a different answer, and every suggestion includes self-help alternatives instead of real answers. It just isn't worth the aggravation they create. There's no consistency of support, & even after providing every single piece of requested information they required just to get started, none of our companies could be "validated" through their insane system of roadblocks popping up at every turn, and we've been doing accounting for 30 years. We're shutting it down; and their failure is causing us to compensate our customers for the time we bill for getting Patriot Payroll setup. They have an accountant's program, but it is an abject failure in every single sense. My advice, if you're an accountant, just don't ever go there. Ever. We gave them everything they asked for for 3 months planning the switch-over to patriot & they could not get over simple company validation. I switched to them initially due to the price, as my private business provider (a one-man band) raised the prices to more than double the market rate. I was pleasantly surprised not only by the very democratic, affordable pricing, which in itself is a reason to sign up, but the ease of use. After you input all of your information, you're done and the system takes care of it for you. Also, the few times I have called or written for help, they have been immediately responsive with clear, concise answers. All of their help desk staff are well informed and educated, you never have to talk to a call center or new-hire who doesn't know what is going on. They are a breath of fresh air. My hope is that they can keep the rates reasonable, and keep the quality high. Easy to set up an employee, salary or Hourly. Adjust their withholdings, and run direct deposit payroll. Extremely simple. Also, the reports are comprehensive and their help section is awesome. I have called multiple times on how to do something and they are the best with phone customer service. Especially as a new payroll software user, I did not know what many forms or reports did. I also had a three-way call with Patriot, me, and my financial advisor on the proper setup of solo 401(k). That helped a ton. Now it is part of every paycheck. Now over 2 years into the product, I would not switch and see how it can grow with my business. I have recommended it to others. It was recommended to me by a friend who no longer has her own business. Finally, If you take advantage they have free webinars that are very helpful. I have had no issues whatsoever with them filing the necessary taxes (qquarterly tax filings). I've needed to reach out to customer service for a variety of things over the 3+ years that I've used them, and they are always speedy to reply, detailed in their response, and I love that I can email them about things. That way I have a paper trail to reference later if needed. **What do you dislike about Patriot Software?** Patriot really has all the features I could wish for, but sometimes I've had to reach out to their customer service team to ask about a feature I want. To be clear: they've always had the features available (like very detailed break-out/QBO mapping of each employee's other money types, e.g. mapping each employee's housing allowance to a unique line item in QBO), but it wasn't obvious that it was offered until I asked for it and then it has to be "activated" for my client. It'd be nice if all their features were more easily viewed and I didn't have to reach out about it. This is hardly a complaint or gripe about Patriot though. I get what I need and want from them, but sometimes it just takes an email to get it. I sing their praises to anyone looking for a cost-effective payroll solution. **What problems is Patriot Software solving and how is that benefiting you?** Patriot is great from a budget standpoint, as well as combining tasks into one affordable place. If you wish to make a change to the amount of time granted to someone, it is a pain. Also, if you are processing payroll for different types of employees, such as hourly employees and salaried employees, or if they are paid on a different schedule (monthly versus biweekly), you must use a drop down menu to pick the type of employee you are processing before you can see the applicable employees in the list. It is rather disconcerting, because for example, if your default setting is for biweekly employees, only those employees show and are able to be processed. You don't realize you have to drop down and go to a completely different screen to find and locate and process your monthly employees. It takes a while to find the option and realize it exists. The first time I put employees on two schedules I kept going around and around and around all of the options on the site, trying to figure out how to process the monthly employee, because I couldn't find them anywhere. It was a waste of more than an hour until i found I could switch from biweekly to monthly employees on the payroll processing. I have clients who have multiple divisions in their company and want the ability to pull different payrolls from different bank accounts depending on what department they are in. 2. My client pays a fixed net amount ech month, and sometimes the calculation doesn't come out exact, so I have to go back into each employee, change the amount, cancel the payroll in progress (which showed me the wrong net) and re-enter it and try again to get the correct net. 3. Limited accounts for expense tracking - i.e. I can only record salaies to one account. Many times I would like to show officer salaries (and the officer name) to one account and staff salaries to another account. I import each payroll into QuickBooks, using an .IIF file. Inputting personnel information, work hours and other data is straightforward and intuitive, and I find that the design of interface drives efficiency and saves significant time each pay cycle. I have yet to encounter an error / inconsistency in paychecks, or in the reports that Patriot Payroll generates and stores for easy access. I am impressed by the amount of time freed up for me and my staff, now that we can rely upon Patriot Payroll - and avoid the need for accuracy and completeness checking we have encountered with past payroll systems. I have also been impressed with Patriot Payroll’s ability to stay up-to date with the tax and regulatory changes that often assail small businesses without tax / accounting specialists on staff. The freedom from staying apace of ever-changing tax laws is eased dramatically by Patriot’s adjustments to keep their application compliant with current guidance and law, and, by all appearances, Patriot Payroll continues to make the investments in resources and staff to remain the best deal on the market with regard to the value they offer. I recommend Patriot Payroll regularly to both current clients and business associates. They are, in my mind, the best deal on the market. **What do you dislike about Patriot Software?** Patriot Payroll has consistently performed well over my initial couple of years using the tool. I have found no inconsistencies or inaccuracies, and filings have been timely and complete. **What problems is Patriot Software solving and how is that benefiting you?** As noted, Patriot keeps up with regulatory and tax changes, and generates accurate and complete paychecks and reports.
