The free version, which is a huge perk, allows you to import two files a month and unlimited live recordings for transcription. It separates the speakers for you and time stamps to make it easy to go back and reference the original audio file or meeting, should you need to. Having a free transcription service is a huge plus, especially as a reporter who spends countless hours sifting through and transcribing interviews and meetings for every story. **What do you dislike about Otter.ai?** The only thing I will say is the accuracy is lacking slightly. The positive is, I continue to submit my recordings for review to help Otter improve and rate each transcription in the hopes that the more I and others do this, the better Otter will be in the future. I'd say, just don't take everything it writes at face value, so it doesn't cut out all the time, but after one read-through while listening to my recording, I can catch any and all mistakes, and it still is much faster than pausing recordings while jotting down all that I can remember. **What problems is Otter.ai solving and how is that benefiting you?** Otter, like I said, saves me a ton of time. The editing features are also very intuitive for correcting any transcription errors. **What do you dislike about Otter.ai?** The pricing, this tool used to be free, so to get a comparatively minimal amount of minutes of transcription per month is a tough pill to swallow. Other than that, additional cross-platform compatibility other than just Zoom would be helpful. No software is perfect, but otter is pretty close. Otter is old technology, speech to text. It was great when it came out 5 years ago, but the products today have passed Otter by. Otter is great for transcription, but why use it when you can get transcription for free now from Google, Teams and Zoom? Otter's not ideal for follow-up, automating insights from customer meetings. Otter won't save you time and its transcripts lack any intelligence or insights. Our company stopped using Otter because we tried out other great tools that require less time to get meeting highlights and action item follow-ups. The automated note tools out there today use AI to extract what you need from long transcripts and summarize them into highlights. Otter doesn't do this. It stores transcripts and recordings. It doesn't even come with a video, which is a major bummer. The other big thing Otter is missing is sharing highlights from the video and key moments. My colleagues appreciate the fact that they don't have to read a long Otter transcript anymore. The AI is getting pretty decent where you pick the stuff you want highlighted like action items, decisions, and objections, and the AI can recap this for you, like the cliff notes. We're now at the point where we leave a meeting and the AI can tell us how the meeting went, who said what, what was important, how people felt, and what we need to do next. **Recommendations to others considering Otter.ai:** None, otter's product is outdated and far behind other less expensive, free alternatives from Teams, Google and others. **What problems is Otter.ai solving and how is that benefiting you?** None anymore. We don't use otter anymore. We used it for transcription for recruiting interviews, sales calls, meeting note taking. But Otter still makes you do a lot of work, cutting and pasting and has no workflow automation. We're using a much better tool that has Otter's transcription and commenting, but does the heavy lifting extracting what's important to us and summarizing the highlights. Otter did not help us, without a lot of time consuming video editing, to create training videos for onboarding our techs. ### 16. We've been using it to create show notes and transcripts for a company podcast The price is definitely right, you get 600 minutes a month for free (10 hours) so if you're not going through too much content it is more than enough. It's also pretty good at speaker identification, which makes life easier. **What do you dislike about Otter.ai?** The actual language processing is a bit hit-or-miss, especially with speakers who have accents. I usually have to run the transcript through Grammarly and then manually edit it to get it to a readable article, but if you just need notes for yourself, this wouldn't be a problem. I like how it records your audio AND turns your spoken words into a sharable text format. You can even share the recorded audio which doubles up your content creation. You speak your content, can edit the text within the app, then share to a document format for let's say a blog post, then share the audio as a podcast episode as well as load it as a youtube video. That's three types of content channels from one recording! There's a reason why this app is so popular amongst authors and the share capabilities with multiple formats is a big one, saving so much time to get the content done and start sharing to your marketing and social channels. **What do you dislike about Otter.ai?** The pricing, in my opinion, is a bit much and there aren't many options which I feel is a bit odd considering the obvious scalability of the program there could be more option available for me specified needs. As a basic user, you get an allotted amount of recording time each month, and you can only share in TXT format or the audio. I (naively) did not realize the service AUTMOTICALLY enrolls you in an annual subscription renewal - and will NOT OFFER A COURTESY REFUND. (though it is crystal clear I never used the $99 subscription the FIRST year and they offer NO REMINDER or PROMPT that it was about to renew - unlike many subscription services. At $99 that seems really unfair (it's not like a one month subscription to Netfix at $13.99). So I was automatically charged another FULL YEAR SUBSCRIPTION at $99 a few days ago - so I have now paid $200 for ZERO VALUE and their customer service doesn't even reply. I abhor this modern "business practice" - it surprises me that it's still legal to do this with no consideration for consumer rights or any REQUIRED COMMUNICATION TO THE CUSTOMER they are about to charge you with no refund ... thus, all of these services liberally practice the "obscure" practice of making it hard to know you have a subscription, or undo it. I'm over it! As a general rule. I will NEVER do business with this company - and I realize now, ANY ONLINE SERVICE that requires a credit card is going to likely be setup like this. BUYER BEWARE!!! Still, if it hears a brand name for a $5 billion product, it should recognize it the same each time. Often it hears a different word, making editing a real challenge. That said, I can't even use the search function within the app. It stinks. There is no REPLACE. It's like a 40-year-old text editor on MS-DOS. Doesn't fit well with the product promise. As with so many AI platforms, there is a self-serving Silicon Valley mindset in the code: tech vocabulary is processed well. Medical terms, meh.
