In 10g/11g, the limitations of Express Edition were quite harsh, but thankfully since v18c, the XE limits have been raised and allow much more room for manoeuvre. Unstructured, Non-SQL data can't be indexed or stored in it. However, for structured data it's a must to have.

In older versions we don't have expdp and some grid environment so I don't think the versions are advantage now we have hot backups and rman which we can do backups with out doing the db down. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Express edition helps to get most of it with a lighter version despite most of the common features included. I was very excited when I used first time because it was a quick installation, occupy less space on the disk and faster response.
