It can kind of do anything. So many different companies have ways in which they price their products and take them to market it is almost impossible to commoditize it without having the customer to suffer a hefty change in process. BigMachines gives customers the best chance at implementing the process they have today. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
This is a complex beast. The customer's configuration and pricing process may not be the best and unless the customer does a lot of work rationalizing their own process the solution will somewhat mimic the poor scalability already inherent with the process. With great flexibility comes great complexity. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I think the customer service at BM is headed in the right direction. I used this product from Jan '11 to Jan '13 and saw major improvements to service during that timeframe. They seem to be committing themselves to happy customers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It's extremely difficult to make modifications to configurators or the doc engine without coding experience. The interface is also far from user friendly. We had constant complaints from our users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There are many features that can be released with this tool, however, when I first started to learn how to administer this it wasn't too admin friendly since it requires a lot of BML and codes (about 3 years ago). As of today it has improved and starting to lean toward a much admin-friendly environment. There are lots of good features that comes with BigMachines that can help companies quote better. Too much codes and BML. We had a frequency of our server dropping once a week for couple months. Reported the issue many times, but the customer support engineers wasnt able to figure out what the issue that was causing the problem. This was quite a disturbance to our day-to-day work as our Sales reps are trying to send out as many quotes as possible. There is a reliability issue with this tool. BigMachines is very customizable and can be use for simple solutions as well as very advanced ones. You can also integrate BigMachines with several different CRM systems like Salesforce, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics and SAP.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Easy to deploy from test enviroments to production. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Having experience from complex configurations I know that as time goes by it gets more and more difficult to maintain the system. There is a lot of code in library functions and actions making it a risk of missing out on things when implementing functionality. Furthermore, BigMachines executes rules sequentally meaning that the more rules you have the longer it takes to execute actions. I also find it hard to get a good overview without already knowing the system very well.
The Document engine is NOT good. The idea is good but it's both slow and low functional. If you want to make changes you have to make it a routine to copy the design elements at first in order to be able to go back when it stops to work. You have to be very careful how you do changes as well. I would rather recommend using the old XSL-templates. I prefer 10000 rows of XSL code over the Document Engine.
My experience is using BigMachines integrated with Salesforce. The systems integrate using web services. One thing that my customer wanted was to be able to create configurations from Salesforce without having to enter BigMachines and enter data manually. This is hardly possible and not recommended by BigMachines.
We have had big issues with performance. Large configurations can take many minutes to process. This could be a problem with this customers particular installation though.
Also the behaviour between browsers are not consistent, at least not for administrators and developers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I like the theory behind the system. If it worked, it would be a very powerful solutions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
It's 100% customizable, and not configureable. Any changes require a services engagement. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Integration with SF.com makes it easier for our sales team to access. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The large amount of products that we have in the system make it hard to report. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
