For my team and I, OpenVPN Access Server has been part of our infrastructure for the last 10 years. When we first had a need for a reliable, day to day VPN, we researched and spoke with others in our field looking for recommendations. Unanimously most of the people we spoke with recommended OpenVPN. We were tasked with setting it up for a team of about 15 people and found it easy to roll it out even to those in other physical locations with simple to follow instructions. We integrated it for our entire team in less than 24 hours. We consulted with their customer support on a few questions during the initial setup and they were extremely helpful in ensuring a smooth transition from our old VPN server. Our team uses OpenVPN daily with some of us staying connected 24x7. We found that the feature set was more than enough for us as we only use the typical features that most would. With that said we have the flexibility to use more advanced features if we should need them in the future. When it comes time to renew our licensing, it's as simple as copy and pasting the new licenses code. There's no need for a restart or anything that would compromise our connectivity. We have been extremely happy in the 10 years that we have been using OpenVPN Access Server. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The only thing that has been a challenge for us over the years is that the licensing model has changed. Even with that change, we were willing to pay a little bit more knowing that the OpenVPN Access Server has worked extremely well for us over the last 10 years. After speaking with their team, they helped us through choosing the right model for oour needs and ever since then we just pay the renewal fees, update our license key, and move on. What I appreciate the most about OpenVPN Access Server is its remarkable stability. We implemented a self-hosted server in our company over four years ago, and we have encountered no issues thus far. It operates swiftly and reliably. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
What I like least in my experience with OpenVPN server is the web interface for creating access groups. While the interface allows you to create multiple groups with different routes to various networks, it does not allow you to name those routes. Consequently, over time, administration becomes quite challenging, as one cannot remember which network range corresponds to each. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
OpenVPN Access Server stands out for its balance of strong security, ease of use, and scalability. It provides a reliable VPN solution with a user-friendly web interface, making deployment and management straightforward even for those with limited networking experience. Its support for multiple authentication methods, seamless integration with existing infrastructure, and ability to handle remote access and site-to-site connections efficiently make it a versatile choice. Plus, its robust encryption ensures data protection while maintaining stable performance across various devices and operating systems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
While OpenVPN Access Server is a powerful and flexible VPN solution, its licensing model can be a drawback for some users, as it limits the number of concurrent connections unless additional licenses are purchased. Additionally, while the web-based management interface is convenient, it may feel somewhat basic for advanced users who prefer more granular control. Initial setup and configuration can also be slightly complex for those unfamiliar with networking concepts, especially when dealing with firewall rules and routing. Despite these minor drawbacks, it remains a solid and reliable choice for secure remote access. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
We don't have too many login issues or dropped connections with OpenVPN. I've used other vpn services in the past and they can be a bit shaky at times causing disconnecitons or issues with users being able to log on.
We have had issues of those kinds with OpenVPN but they are usually solved quickly and happen fairly rare.
I'm also happy about the speed of the vpn network. I don't notice any significant delay's when on the vpn vs when off. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
I am the admin and the web-based gui console is very limited. You have to do things like reset mfa codes through a terminal. I wish I could just locate a user's account in the web console and reset there.
Seriously OpenVPN, this is something that should be possible. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Once its setup and configured it is a very solid and reliable secure VPN that is easy to use and integrate into your networks. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The initial setup is a bit involved and requires a Linux box to run on. Updating the software and Linux system does take some time and Linux knowledge. If a user changes their MFA device, ie Phone, it takes some administration to setup the new MFA prompt to add the new device for the end user. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

The best thing about OpenVPN AS is that it is pretty much literally a turn-key product. They have a virtual appliance available that works out of the box with NO installation, per se, required. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The downside of AS, however is that a lot of the detailed configuration and control options are only available via a command-line interface, which is not exactly intuitive. It is, however, quite well documented and there are numerous forums online where you can find how-to-do whatever it is you are needing to do. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

It is secure, fast and easy to setup and work with. The support is excellent and fast. We use it on daily basis for our local staff and vendors. Alot of features are very helpful to our staff and it is easy to integrate with our local IAM solution. We hve implemented it in one day Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
In Saudi Arabia, OpenVPN site is blocked by Internet provider. This makes it difficult to pay online for the subscription. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The user-based permissions allow you to limit specific teams to specific network subnets. And split tunneling improves performance by routing only specific traffic through the VPN. This reduces your network throughput for the VPN server. The two factor authentication integration and the individual web portal simplifies user management by allowing easy access to configurations and credentials. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The licensing costs can add up quickly for larger teams. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
