**Reviewed by:** Kristian F. | Senior Engineer CAD and Marine Operations, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 08, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The fact that you never loose any work due to constant saving and have option to restore or make a brach from an earlier stage of work. Next thing being to easy to administrate, regarding both software and hardwarre. Customer support. Collaboration possibilities

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Do not have auto BOM dimensions of parts.
Lacking some basic drawing functionality, like ex. break and section in same view. Lack of integrated 3D sketch. Does not have possibility to export DXF from ASSY parts ,need to be located in PArt Studio to have this option.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are in need af a CAD system in our work. Its our one biggest tool for being able to do our work.
Apart from other CAD systems we are benefiting on easy administration and need for less computer power.
Never loosing any work and the good solutions for collaboration.

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The ease of linking documents and having a PDM directly tied to all of your created files.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Some features from other CAD softwares are not present, although I have never had a hard stop in my design process due to this.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Collaboration is very simple and versioning/branching documents helps you prototype several variations of designs at once. Everything is tied together, and once you learn how to navigate that without making a mess of things in the PDM software your workflow gets substantially more efficient.

  ### 7. its the future

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Daniel C. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 20, 2020

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

OnShape allows for real engineer to engineer, and full team collaboration. it solve the ongoing issues of constant updates, to both software and hardware. it is intuitive to use once you forgot the old ways of how software used to work.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

my only concern is overall cloud security for all things in the cloud as well as the loss of all usable materials if and when you do not have a connection. but for the most part we can no longer perform our tasks without a connection so it is one of those new regalities we just need to get used to.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we definitely are seeing a reduction in overall engineering time on projects. we really benefit form the ability to easily share our data with others.

  ### 8. A all-you-need-in-one CAD suite

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Onshape is a powerful CAD platform, easy to use when you have knowledge of other CAD softwares. Its real-time editing allows multiple users to work together, and is it's real plus. The software's version control needs a bit of time to understand but works well. As a cloud based platform, you can access it with any device

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

The learning curve is quite steep at the beginning. You need a fast internet connection to be able to work, which can be a bit underwhelming. The simulation options are very limited.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

General CAD design

  ### 9. Easy to use and super reliable

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I love how OnShape is completely browser based so there is never any down time and never have to worry about loosing your data. The sketch and modeling environment is the best I've used it of any CAD platform!

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

OnShape is still in its infancy so there are some features missing or not quite finished.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It allows me to design and access my files anywhere. It also just works very little errors or issues!

  ### 10. Great Software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Andreas G. | Konstrukteur Mechanik, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 08, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The freedom to have my whole CAD-Library everywhere I need it.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Drawing's functionality could be even more better, but I see a steady process in improvements.
The functionality to search for configured part properties should also be improved in future updates.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

WIth Onshape there is no need to have expensive CAD-Workstations. The PLM functionality is a real timesafer compared to a classic on premise CAD solution.

  ### 12. Fast & Flexible CAD

Putting our CAD in the cloud. This allows us to work onsite or remotely with no issues.

  ### 13. Fantastic CAD solution

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Russell W. | President, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 07, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Sharing files for others without CAD to be able to view and comment on is great. I use OnShape several times during the day and I am able to access in multiple locations on any device with ease.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

I have struggled to get the assembly build features dialed in, compared to the other CAD systems that I've used. Outside of that, the bulk of what OnShape offers is very quick to integrate and get working easily.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Onshape allows me to create new concepts and work through the product development process with customers in many different levels of experience. It allows me to create parts, print them out, evaluate, test and iterate forward.

  ### 15. Convenient in the initial design process but flawed in some later stages

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sayak D. | Mechanical Design Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 14, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The accessibility of Onshape is remarkable. And it becomes more useful when you want a feedback from your senior as quickly as possbile. In terms of part design, it is simply too convenient to have all the parts to be glanced in a single 3d environment other than the assembly.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

That being said, it still has a long way to go, for example drawing environment is not up to the standard set by its peers. Drawing environment is simply too inconsistent for a long session.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In terms of quick designing and showing to the customer to get a feedback, it is pretty fast in that regard.

  ### 16. Excellent Tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ability to use the tool anywhere with any computer

  ### 17. Easy to use CAD

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eric P. | Equipment Engineering Technician, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 09, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

One of the best things is that you are always using the most up-to-date version. You never need to install a new version. Everyone is using the same version globally.
Being able to colaborate over distance is a major plus as I work remotely but can still work on things that the people in the shop are looking at and referencing.
Customer support is A+! I have used other CAD systems that wanted to charge me hourly tech support to solve issues with the program. Onshape is very quick to respond to any emails sent and either show what I've missed or offer a solution to the problem. Also, several of the things that I have mentioned as 'nice to have' features have been implemented in updates so it is very encouraging to have the product growing in response to user feedback.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

There are still some things that Onshape doesn't have that other CAD programs have had but every program seems to have something that others don't and it appears to just be a matter of time before Onshape will have added all the shortcuts that I was used to in other programs.
The Android version of Onshape is a bit underwelming but the fact that I can show things on my phone is pretty great!

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Onshape is the primary CAD program that my company uses. It allows for easy collaboration between remote employees and head office. As well as multiple users working on the same projects.

  ### 18. An extremely capable, easy to use, affordable cloud based CAD platform.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alan H. | Crossword Compiler, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 09, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The intuitive functionality is supported by a comprehensive library of courses which allowed me to teach myself CAD from scratch and design complex prototype parts ready for 3D printing and injection moulding. This is truely a program suitable for experts without the barriers for non-experts to develop their skills and produce fantastic results.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Occasionally I have had to go back into the training courses a couple of times to get my head round a couple of the more complex functions - but I think that is to be expected when you have such a broad and complex software package.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It allowed me to access a high quality CAD package from my Chromebook - with which most packages are not compatible. I could design highly complex parts, without much experience of CAD and no formal training and was also able to generate patent drawings using the system. It has been crucial for both designing parts and communicating designs to manufacturers and industrial partners.

  ### 19. Perfect tool for team work in CAD design

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Pierre R. | Ingénieur conception mécanique Hardware, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

versioning: history of all the changes and possibilities to go back on previoius versions of a part are keys for a clean product design

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

drawings are sometimes awfull to work with. the drawing module is really late in ter of performance compared to opther CAD softwares

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

easy access on protected links for CAD sharing with organisation members
a lot of support when I have issues and bugs (also means I have a lot more issues and bugs than on other softwares, but they are solved quickly)

  ### 20. Excellent, flexible CAD software

The file management that allows for version control and collaboration. A close second is the cloud processing so I can open large assemblies on any computer including my phone.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

The support for 2D drawings is limited and laggy.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It allows for easy file management and release of cad. It is also very easy to collaborate due to the repository focus.

  ### 24. biomedical device design solutions with cost effective and real-time collaboration in start ups

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Abraham R. | Regulatory affairs and Quality Assurance Engineer , Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 12, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The impressive feature i found about onshpe is that its cloud based real time collaboration in which multiple peope can work on the same design which is good thing for start ups and group projects where multiple intervention is needed.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

One of the demerit what i felt is like the dependency of internet for working since its a cloud based platform

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Onshapes helps to solve issues like disjoined collaboration , version control issues by the realtime cloud based design acess and also it will accelarte the product development

  ### 25. Great product, extremely easy to use and meets our needs

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gustavo C. | Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 07, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I have never experience such a good pre and post sales support in the other products we had used before, like NX from Siemens and Solidworks from Dassault. PTC considered me as a top client since the beginning, making me feel comfortable during onboarding and when we need technical support.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

The main issues are related to small differences between Onshape and the previous CAD systems I was using. Some are a question of habit, some are addressable changing the way I work. A few features I miss I am sure PTC will implement in the future.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Sharing data with clients and managing versions are much easier now.

  ### 26. Good experiences after switching from Solidworks

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sebastian Maklary R. | Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 10, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

It is very stable, enables easy collaboration with collegues, has a good learning center and has regular additions of usable features.
The file system and revision control is also great.
Their customer support is also very helpful when we have had needed a workaround for missing features.

We switched from Solidworks and have found it very easy to switch. We have used it daily for about a year with two licenses.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

There's still a few features missing, such as some symbols used for complete tolerancing according to ISO standards. Their sheet metal features also have some annoying limitations in adding fillets near bends.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It allows us to design our products and make the drawings needed to get things manufactured.

  ### 27. Onshape is the Future of CAD - And the Future is Now

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brian B. | Principal Mechanical Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 07, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The best part about Onshape is collaboration. Seemlessly working together with your team.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

There are some very particular use cases that I find SolidWorks or another software does slightly better.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Collaboration and data management. With SolidWorks, these two things are costly and time consuming. With Onshape, these two things are a breeze.

  ### 28. Easy to use

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 20, 2022

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Creating complicated assemblies is a breeze.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Creating complicated assemblies often introduces unwelcomed lag.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Formerly we used solidworks and its PDM. Files were constantly lost, incorrect revisions were pushed out to the machine shop. This doesnt happen with Onshape.

  ### 29. Onshape = CAD Gamechanger

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Axel G. | Geschäftsführer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 26, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

You don`t need a CAD PC. You can work everywhere with a CAD System!
PDM System is integrated, you don`t need a 2nd programm for that. And it works fine.

Btw. no crashes like other cad programms!

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Sometime the Cad Mouse doesn`t work with Firefox.
So we must restart the 3d mouse and then re login to onshape -> after that it works perfectly again.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Next level CAD System.
Iam really impressed. Cloud system - really nice.

  ### 30. New user, used SolidWorks before

Part Studio makes design easier. Website tutorial are very good for first time users.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

As a former SolidWorks user I miss several shortcuts from it. and sometimes the menus are confusing.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

fast design of parts, improved detailing and reduced production mistakes

  ### 31. Fantastic collaborative CAD

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David G. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 21, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I use this program daily, and it has changed the game for us in ways I never would have expected.

It's in the browser - everything is a link, making sharing, discussing, collaborating with everyone within your company very natural.
View only access is free, meaning your support team can access your CAD directly, securely, with no extra licenses. This reduces the friction, and also reduces how much docuemntation we need to maintain to fully enable our support to solve issues on their own.

Admin controls are clear, concise, easy to use, and it is built so you can try something, change your mind, and adapt the tool to your company's needs, instead of forcing certain early decisions that lock you into a sub-optimal decision forever (other programs tend to do this a lot). This makes implementation easy.

It's stable - I've never lost more than a second of work history due to power outages, computer issues, or internet issues.
It's hung a few times in the last year (infrequent), but a quick refresh on the browser, and I'm right back to where I was.
Customer support is included, and they don't discern between bugs and issues vs 'how to use' questions. They just want to help, and are extremely responsive.

Pricing is transparent, and there are no hidden 'gotchas.'

Export naming conventions combined with their google drive integrations are extremely powerful, and have enabled a whole suite of low-code automations that have enabled us to effectively automated 90% of the work to translate to an ERP, and the options to build more direct interfaces exist for the long term.

They are constantly releasing new and useful features, and are attentive to feature requests. A concern of mine was once they were acquired by PTC, innovation would slow or stop, but they certainly have shown no signs of slowing down. I've had feature requests get implemented within two weeks (this was definitely an exception, but was impressive none the less).

Overall, it's pretty fast. It's faster than Solidworks for most things, and does well with large assemblies, but will still get bogged down with very large assemblies.
We will have 25 million triangle modesl / 5,000 bodies, and will get some slow down, but it still performs significantly better than Solidworks did for the same size assemblies. Not as fast for huge assemblies as CREO or CATIA, but for the cost, ease of use, implementation, and what we actually use it for, it knocks everything else out of the water.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Large assembly drawings can be a bit slow.
Items are useful, but would be a game changer if they could be edited by spreadsheets. (You can upload items via spreadsheet which is great, but not edit as of when I'm writing this).

Neither of these are deal breakers.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Design, sharing, collaboration, and product data management.

  ### 32. Easy collaborative CAD and analysis

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The ability to use any browser, collaborate on the same part/assembly, integration with various online analysis tools, user created tools

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Workflow is occasionally clunky, but otherwise not much to dislike

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

CAD design for laser cutting, 3D printing, and FEA

  ### 33. Easy to use and functional

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Semiconductors | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 11, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

I really love using OnShape for 2D and 3D modeling. I like having the ability to use OnShape for more than just a CAD design software. The 2D sketch features give me the opportunity to create DXF and DWG drawings for 2D CAD programing. The 3D features in OnShape are very intuitive and and easy to learn if you're new to OnShape.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Sometimes OnShape is too smart for its own good and it tries to guess which feature face you are trying to select. It is sometimes difficult to select 3D faces that are intricate.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We needed user friendly software that allowed us to create 3D and 2D models as well as detailed Machine Drawings for our suppliers.

  ### 34. Great for collaboratiors

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The ease of working together on a single document. It is simple to share work with outside vendors too. Product support has been great; I can email Kyle about any of my questions. Implementing new ideas is a breeze. The feature set keeps improving, especially from feedback.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

The main downside is the speed of onshape. Since it is in the cloud, the performance is not as snappy as a local CAD system like solidworks. This is mainly seen in assemblies. The second downside is part of its feature: Documents. Documents can get bogged down very quickly with part studios and assemblies and derived parts.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Onshape allows us as a team to work together on the same project and on the same documents. This just can't be done on other CAD programs. We are also able to leverage Featurescripts to make custom features for Onshape and to leverage configurations to make out designs more robust

  ### 35. CAD flexibility and functionality

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The cloud platform. Takes our IT headaches away and allows us to work outside of our IT departments abilities to support us.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Still missing a few features that would help us in drawings and parts but there are ways to get around them for us.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We had a hard time upgrading software every other year and didn't upgrade for 5 years even though we were on subscription. We had to rope our corporate IT in and our VAR and users everytime we wanted an upgrade to PDM and/or software. It took us a year of coordinating and planning to get it done. Also we have an office in China that couldn't access our PDM due to Chinese VPN blocking. Now they can use it normally and view our files simply. Also it's so much faster in the browser. I can pull a drawing or model open in seconds and not minutes.

  ### 36. Onshape user review about good and need to improvement features.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Pros:

I like the Sketcher tools, part design mode very much user friendly.
And importing and editing features are nice.

In Context mode is very useful.

Seemless operation because of cloud platform.

customer support is good.

Regularly using for our product design activities.

Exporting option is very nice, since it is having able to export to all differnt formats to integrate with other softwares.

Very easy to adapt and implement and use in any organisation which is having very limited and not sophisticated Modelling and R&D Activities.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Cons:

Assembly features need to be improved. Cannot rely on Mate connector for all operations.
Derived feature operation is not comfortable as in Creo's Inheritance and Merge.
Assembly mirror feature need to be added, instead of strugling with mate connetor mirroring.

Not very much confident to use for large assembly.

Error list and resolving tips are not there. Only showing failed features is not useful.

Cabling and wire harnessing is very difficult to use and not user friendly.Need clear menus, and specifications build into use.Does not seems to proficeint with Feature script.

Piping tools are there or not?

Drawing: Need auto dimensioning like creo.BOM Ballon creation needs to be user frienly

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ease of use and quicly finish my 3D activities.

  ### 37. Great CAD tool in the cloud!

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rick B. | Head Engineering, Manufacturing & Technology, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 13, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

It is online, always up to date (no version issues), completely back tracable and has built in PDM. I can use it on any platform (phone, tablet, laptop, PC) and it does not require a CAD computer. Easy to log in from practically anything with a browser. I never had it crash.

I like the features a lot. Expecially the custom features can be real time savers!
Version control is very good, branching a part into a different part to test a different idea is really easy and straight forward. Do you like it? Merge it into the main. Is it a dead end, close it off and continue with the main branch. GitHub like version management.

Surfacing is very good, but I still need to train myself even more in it. Good training video's and training tutorials available.

I have used onshape daily for about 2 years.

Easy to give other people read access, read write access, and be able to take it away when necessary. You OWN your data.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Large assemblies, for example STEP files, can take quite some time to import

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Keeping track of CAD data and version control with Git-type versioning is really powerfull and usefull.

Onshape allows me to work much more efficently.

  ### 42. That's how CAD data management has to be done

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Goods | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 19, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Onshape's architecture specialises in creating dependencies and references between different components of an assembly. This makes a lot of sense, because in practice every assembly has parts that have to fit together. What is always complicated and time-consuming to plan with file-based systems can be done in no time at all with Onshape. As the data is consistently stored in the cloud single source of truth, the references are never lost.
Agile development with different variants and versions is child's play. A new version for an entire assembly, including drawings, is created in just a few seconds. Data is never lost and you can always go back to an old version. Onshape excels in the way it handles CAD data and can be seen as a prime example of the advantages of cloud applications, even outside of CAD applications (why doesn't MS Office work in the same way?). Did I already talk about updates? No need to worry about this anymore. All Onshape users are on the same page and data is always compatible for real time collaboration.
We users have adapted to deal with the problems of classic CAD data in the past. These days are over fortunately. Onshape impressively solves many of these pain points and shows a bright future for CAD work. This is just the beginning.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Onshape now has a very good range of functions. However, certain detailed functions still lack the functionality required to keep up with the long-standing leaders in the CAD industry. However, with the many automatic updates, Onshape is quickly catching up and is also suitable for professional use in many areas of product development.
For many external partners who are not familiar with Onshape, online collaboration is still unfamiliar and they ask if I can send the data as an STP file by e-mail. This is not Onshape's fault, but it does take some patience and persuasion to realise the full potential of the cloud.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Agile versioning of different design iterations and variations.
Excellent way of managing geometric reference between parts.

  ### 43. Essential cloud software that I use every day

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 17, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Cloud computing means you don't have to worry about hardware or backing up your data. Before moving to Onshape I used other software for about 15 years and was content in my ignorance. Onshape makes creating drawings and models even easier and the way you can communicate these to your client/customer/collegues is seamless. Over the years I've reccommended the platform to many companies and home enthusiats and we all love using it. The onboarding courses are available to all making transferring really easy. My 12 year old has even done one of the courses to help her with 3D printing at school.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

As Onshape has grown its become more corporate and the personal touch isn't there anymore. Back in the day you were always talking to the same sales people and tech support people. The price of success but its only a minor thing.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm a project manager who uses it for 3D GA drawings and communicating ideas to suppliers and stakeholders. The ability to go out into a factory with my laser, measure the area and add dims as I'm walking around saves me a lot of time.

  ### 44. Onshape: SaaS CAD | The Future of CAD, available TODAY

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 13, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Onshape is a full feature MCAD program, always updated, always available, no maintenance, no drama. Excellent to use. Features are being added all the time, but it's already full featured and a real pleasure to use. Designing in context of an assembly, capturing design intent with top-down part studios, without worrying about blow-ups or clunky workflows!

It's all done in the browser on your desktop, or if you want you can install an app on your phone or slate. It's also free BTW! But you need to play for a licence if you want your work to be confidential.

Also, easy to design and evaluate alternative ideas and review/roll-back with software development type tools, Git-like. fork a design and add branches for different ideas as required. Really easy to collaborate with fine grained access control. Allows comments at various places from collaborators too, so no need for lengthy emails and embedded screen shots.

If the legacy MCAD people were thinking about a new CAD system, without worrying about what has been; this would be their common thought-destination. And now with PTC/Creo/Windchill IP and client base, it can only get stronger.

Installing a desktop application and maintaining it with various service packs, what a needless kafuffle!?

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Not a lot to dislike about Onshape. Sometimes the internet is down, rare to be honest, and you can always mitigate that with mobile data as required -- there is not a massive amount of data going back and forth. Sometimes I have dark imaginings of storing data in the cloud but have been much more relaxed about that since around 2002, with salesforce.com implementation!

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Onshape for MCAD, generating assemblies, parts and drawings. It's great for all of the above. In particular, the part studio concept is brilliant for capturing design intent. Robust assemblies without assembling a load of bits and bobs with bottom-up and messing around with the fits. Easy to maintain. Just works like it should. And when you do assemble parts, 6 degrees of freedom solved in one interaction, or movement resolved and constrained to real life in a trice.

The Git-like branches and forks are also easy to use. You can make a complete copy of a design to try out new idea, or use branches to experiment with what-if scenarios and switch them on or off.

For me, the part studio concept is a terrific way of capturing design intent, where the necessary inter-related parts are all designed in the same space. Small or large changes can be enacted very quickly without much fuss. Much easier than changing different parts in a bottom-up assembly or figuring out what parameters do what in a driven design, sometimes a chore to figure out even if you did all the work yourself last month.

  ### 45. Onshape is the best CAD that I have used!

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ben B. | Design Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 05, 2019

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

With Onshape I can change the model while the customer or client is viewing it and understand what they want changed instantly. There is no waiting for files to be transferred and reviewed and time wasted on wrong changes.
When I have a large job to be done with a short lead time I can have others helping on the model right down to the same sketch.
The configurations save a lot of time, no large lists to pick through to find the right part, just set your parameters from drop down lists or check boxes and your done.
No other CAD program can do what Onshape can do in these areas, they are way ahead.
There is so much more, you can access your model from your phone, laptop or tablet, you don't need a high end CAD computer to run the program, you can share your model and know it will always be the latest version even if you do changes after sharing. If you need CAD, I would definitely recommend trying Onshape. There are areas still to be developed but with their 3 weekly updates, improvements are coming all the time.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

The downside to Onshape is that I wish they were around years ago then I would not have so much data to transfer from my old CAD system. The only thing I really struggle with is large assemblies, they are slow and take time to load, this is an issue with most parametric CAD systems and I am yet to find something better.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

One of the main problems it solves is the speed. I can have designs modeled faster without worring about file paths and file names, or going down a path that does not work as I can roll back to any point in the design process and start from there. The customer can view the product all the time as it is devloping so any changes can be made early on before it is goone too far down a wron g path. Also no transfer of files which is a great for security and IP protection and everyone is on the same page, no second guesing. Also we don't need servers or an in-house IT guy to maintain the CAD systems. We can just get on and do what we are meant to do, design!

  ### 46. If it is not matching your expectation, it is probably doing it better!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 02, 2022

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

The version management is amazing and has been a life-saver a few times.
Being able to share the models with our clients has been an impactful factor in winning jobs.
The Onshape team has been very consistent in releasing relevant and useful updates and features, which is much appreciated.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

The upcoming CAM function was promoted last year, with discussions on its release on March 2023. There hasn't been any updates ever since. As much as this could improve our manufacturing pipeline, not having it can have a negative impact. My expectation is to at least get a clear, updated schedule; so I can decide whether to get additional CAMWorks licenses or not.
Additionally, I like to see more support and documentation on connecting Onshape with the ERP systems, or using the API as it can greately affect our productivity.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Everyone has access to the drawings, regardless of their location and device. The view-only interface is enough for people without any CAD knowledge to use.

  ### 47. Onshape 3D CAD tool review

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Senthil N. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 15, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Onshape CAD tool is web based tool, so it can be accessed from Mobile platform too. Onshape has good tutorials to help the new leaners. Customer support also very nice. DXF, STP, IGS etc as well as some well known 3D platform models also can be easily integrated. In assembly we can arrest a part with single fastened mate it is good implementation in CAD tool. "S" shortcut is good for frequent use of feature selection.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Onshape assembly mates is similar to ANSYS 3D modeler. But missing of X Y Z arrow direction in mate options, is sometimes confusing.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Im a designer, so this tool helps in 3D cad modeling activites.

  ### 48. The gift that keeps on giving

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chris v. | Chief Design Officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 19, 2024

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Integrated PDM and low cost were originally compelling but the whole package just keeps on delivering. It's very easy and quick to use, even building old Solidworks files from scratch. Everything from fillets to licences, enterprise settings, drawing templates and release management are quick and intuitive. I really love that the whole history of a product can be embedded in one document and there is traceability between different concepts and revisions, especially when paired with 3D printing.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

Partially related but I wish Arena was a bit more usable as a medical device quality management system. If CAD, PDM, PLM and QMS were all on one intuitive platform then we would get a licence for pretty much everyone in the office.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Secure and intuitive data management. We can have multiple people working simultaneously on a product and have transparent access to all concepts and revision history.

  ### 49. Best CAD system

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Wout T. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2023

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

OnShape is easy to use and get up and running, it's cloud based and runs on your browser so you never need to worry about updating your software or if your files will work with the next update. I used to use Solidworks and after a certain point I wouldn't be able to run large assemblies since OnShape is cloud based you don't really need to worry about that. Lastly the file management system is so much cleaner and I don't have to worry about files accidentally being moved or my hardware crashing. I also think it's really great that they release updates every 3 weeks it's a much more refreshing way of working than is done with more traditional CAD systems.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

The CAD is not as mature as other systems so it does not have some of the industry specific tools and part libraries that other CAD systems have. I also think that the team at OnShape, espiecially since their acquisition by PTC should be bigger in order to impliment improvements to the software at a faster rate.
I think cloud based might also not be the best solution for some companies in terms of regulations, or sensitive information.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It allows me to model parts and assemblies much faster without having to worry about whether or not I'm using the latest version of a part or if a file gets misplaced.
Versioning allows me to keep track of changes to a design and trroubleshoot issues. Cloud based storage means I don't have to worry about my data being lost if something happens to my device nor about saving or the CAD system crashing before I save.

  ### 50. The Best Conceptualizing Platform

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David Y. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 15, 2023

**What do you like best about Onshape?**

Designing on the fly in assemblies by editing in context is great and the aggressive versioning system really keeps things right without getting in the way.

* The real time collision detection is great.

* Being able to measure other parts in assemblies when editing in context speeds the process up hugely.

* Never needing to worry about backups and saving is a great release!

* The render package is nothing short of amazing.

* Adding comments to parts is great.

**What do you dislike about Onshape?**

* There is no native dark mode. I find the white workspace background very tiring when working on concepts. I have added a dark mode app to Chrome for now...but it's not great but is saving my eyes.

* The default of loading the 3D Way on start up is annoying to me.

* I can't find a way to create a new part when in an assembly.

* The datum planes not visible in assemblies?

* I changed to a wide screen monitor quite early on and circles were on screen as ovals. I was working on a part that had both so this caused huge confusion. This turned out to be a monitor setting and nothing to do with onshape...it did burn a load of time though.

* Why are threads on standard parts and threads created on surfaces not visible as helical cuts? I have added a third party add on to give me this.

* The simulation add on has left me baffled...but I will take training on this in the near future.

**What problems is Onshape solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The ease of conceptualizing speed of design progress and agressive versioning keeps everything on track.
