What do you like best about NCP VPN Client?

I love the strong cryptographic verification and the built-in vendor versions that make it great for ease-of-use. I create the user, tell the end user what their authentication tokens are, and boom, they are in and using it. The vendor implementations in Windows make it extremely simple. What do you dislike about NCP VPN Client?

Server-side setup, especially on linux with the various strongswan/libreswan setup, is maddening! It's unrealistically difficult to setup! As a linux server, first you have to find the right distribution-specific *swan to use, then you have to cnofigure it to be a bridge or point-to-point, and then try it. And don't get me started on the logfiles. Logging is absolutely useless. All of the *swan variants have completely useless data in the logfiles. Unless you have already made a point of reading the entire source code from start to finish and commiting it to memory prior to looking at the logs, and fully understanding every line of it, the logs are complete junk. Recommendations to others considering NCP VPN Client:

IPSec is sort of the standard, or the L2TP/IPsec combination where you have l2tp on top of it. The great thing is, as an administrator, you will never have to do more than hand out username, password & shared key to all your users. Desktop/end-user OS's all have good built-in implementations that are supler simple. The horrible part is setting it up under linux. I strongly recommend getting a vendor implementation such as fortigate, sonicwall, etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is NCP VPN Client solving and how is that benefiting you?

Once it is setup and working we are using it mostly for individuals to use from home. The users get in to the VPN and basically get an IP in our DMZ and then can connect from there to the in-house servers. It's a pretty simple problem to solve, but it is what it is. If you note the "dislikes" above, I would strongly recommend that you find a vendor-supplied, built-in version of the IPSec server. That way, you are not confronted with the maddening array of problems that could beset you during setup. I think strongswan should come with a disclaimer of "two drink minimum to install". Unless you are sufficiently lightened up, you will tear your hair out. Either get a complete vendor installation with your router/IDP solution or you'll be in for a painful ride.
