That was the main purpose. Bur we wanted to also communicate with volunteers and we had to use Salesforce for that. ### 2. It should be easy to develop a list and then call is with a script; a virtual phone bank. This functionality is avaiable through third party add-ons. It's nice to pay less than competitors, but this can be a challenge to early fundraising. **What problems is NationBuilder solving and how is that benefiting you?** The cheif advantage is building a contact list and having great twitter and facebook integration with that work. For example if someone follows you on Twitter, you can automatically integrate that into an automated workflow; complete with delegation at various stages (Paths). ### 5. I haven't seen anything comparable in the CRM sphere. **What do you dislike about NationBuilder?** Almost not customizable at all, although you can add custom fields they do not show up in the profile when you add a "New Individual." You would need to make a custom form just to input an individual's data. You also can't search by number of events attended or any similar metric, as they have almost no filtering ability beyond searching by field. For us, this makes NationBuilder unusable and we were forced to look for another CRM. **What problems is NationBuilder solving and how is that benefiting you?** Their services are really great and we are sorry to lose them because of the lack of basic search features. ### 9. Also, some of the website design features are clunky if you customize your website. **Recommendations to others considering NationBuilder:** Do your homework as to what exactly you are looking for in a website hosting software. I also like the map view and turf cutter. I think it's great for call banks and canvassing. Great for parent organizing. We used the Field Edge app last year for the first time and it was awesome. **What do you dislike about NationBuilder?** In the past we have not liked to website end of NationBuilder. Our graphic designer didn't know the code and I don't think we found anyone in our area that was familiar with NB. I thought I would like Paths but I find it too much to manage for parent organizing. I'm trying to get our new development person to use it. It might make more sense for fundraising. I wish there was a way to layer maps, for example, school district maps over layed on top of legislator district maps. Last request, I would love to be able to set a date range for logged calls. It would help with reporting numbers. **Recommendations to others considering NationBuilder:** Just make sure it will meet your website needs. **What problems is NationBuilder solving and how is that benefiting you?** This year we used the map view quite a bit when targeting specific legislators. We were able to quickly activate parents in specific districts for specific actions. I also keep track of everything in NB as far as calendar events and attendees. NB makes it easy for me to pull numbers and see all of our activities. ### 13. We manage our email and text list, our ticketing, our website and our social media all through NationBuilder. We understand who comes to our shows, who engages with us online, and who buys tickets. We know who our superfans are and we have a uniquely tight relationship with each on of them, almost as friends. NationBuilder is really the thing helping us build a really, really strong network of supporters. **What do you dislike about NationBuilder?** It would be really nice if there was an Instagram integration of some kind, but we can live without it. **What problems is NationBuilder solving and how is that benefiting you?** I sort of outlined this in the "What do you like best?" question, but ultimately, it's that we know everything about our people in one place. Normally, we'd have to manage email in an email tool, texting on a texting platform, our website on Wordpress, etc. Now, we just know that "John Doe opens our emails, comes to our shows and retweets us all the time." That said, I looked at over 200 systems to find the one that best met our requirements, and hands down, it was and remains NationBuilder **Recommendations to others considering NationBuilder:** NationBuilder is an all-in-one solution that provides great fetures at an affordable price. There are best of breed programs that excel in specific areas, but if you need a comprehensive solution, NationBuilder is a great choice. **What problems is NationBuilder solving and how is that benefiting you?** Community engagment is the critical element we are trying to accomplish. We've found that the integrated CRM/CMS platform provides great value and is easy to navigate. The site was able to collect information they typed in, but also include more information about the individual in their profile if it was readily available (social media profile, photo, etc). NB was also helpful in communicating with individuals. **What do you dislike about NationBuilder?** NationBuilder was difficult to maneuver. We were trying to arrange and group people, and the process to do so took many clicks and steps. We moved them into "lists" based on who we would like to be at a table together, and once we tried to communicate with these "lists" - there was no way to do so easily. **What problems is NationBuilder solving and how is that benefiting you?** We were able to coordinate over 100 dinners among strangers in LA using NationBuilder, are plan to continue using NB to reengage everyone in our data base. ### 16. I like that this software was designed with lots of flexibility for the user. **What do you dislike about NationBuilder?** I dislike that every time I export something I get a huge spreadsheet that I have to pare down (maybe this has changed, I haven't done it in a few months). I dislike that on this questionnaire I need to select a purpose for which I use Nationbuilder that isn't really the purpose for which I use Nationbuilder. I dislike that I can't assign a few quantitative numbers to profiles and customize what those numbers represent, I would like to see that changed. It seems like that would be useful for others (example: tracking volunteer hours). That one wouldn't help me, I would like to track how many burlap bags I have lent out (# bags). I imagine everyone has a couple custom quantitative tracking metrics that would be helpful. **Recommendations to others considering NationBuilder:** If you think this tool is only applicable to politics, think again. **What problems is NationBuilder solving and how is that benefiting you?** My business requires the development and management of a complicated stakeholder group where stakeholders cannot be treated the same - Nationbuilder helps me customize stakeholder interaction as well as keep a record of what has been done. That's incredibly helpful for our purposes. It's fiddly and requires you to have extensive knowledge of how to update certain things on the supporter site, etc. I also don't love that you can't send test emails to a lot of people as opposed to one or two. **Recommendations to others considering NationBuilder:** It's a great CRM. It requires training, though, and I think they should provide more of that. Requires use of their own proprietary platform for both website & CRM management - for example, cannot use Nationbuilder for website CMS, and a different CRM platform. **Recommendations to others considering NationBuilder:** If you're a nonprofit on a low-budget and starting out from scratch, Nationbuilder will offer you an ability to attain basic email, social media, online donation processing and website management capabilities. Once you start growing, you may find the platform clips your wings a little. Some of our international offices lament the difficulty of finding good, affordable developers familiar with Nationbuilder (e.g., Drupal talent much easier to find). Some pre-canned filters enable you to easily filter/segment audiences - if your criteria match the offered choices. If not, can be challenging to achieve the desired segmentation. Cannot embed videos in email. **What problems is NationBuilder solving and how is that benefiting you?** Ability to perform basic email marketing, publish social media posts, manage basic website CMS, accept online donations. It does each thing good, but does everything together well. It excels in being able to take the datasets and activity across multiple platforms and bring them together (politicial data, geo-spatial data, social matching and data, etc). **What do you dislike about NationBuilder?** I honestly can't say much. It has been at the heart of my professional digital life. I learned css, js, and html on it. I've executed campaigns that have reached hundreds of millions with it. I guess at the beginning I would have desired an easier way to get templates customized. Maybe something like a storefront for templates? We just found out that we could export our supporters into google maps and cut a section of the map out, then create routes from there. We could easily organize petition and door-knocking routes with this built-in tool. The pricing is based on the size of your organization and this makes it very accessible for a grassroots local group like ours. The level of organization and data exporting we can do allows us to answer questions we never would have known otherwise. It's most useful for differentiating between local and remote support, since we require local signatures on our petition only. **What do you dislike about NationBuilder?** It's not straightforward or easy to learn right away. There are so many tools and so many ways to use it that you really need tunnel vision in the beginning. It's also tedious to enter information for the first time, one by one. But there is probably no way around that. Once you get over the initial learning curve (give it a week or two), the program starts doing the work for you. **Recommendations to others considering NationBuilder:** If your data is currently in Excel spreadsheets, you should be able to import that directly to Nationbuilder when you first sign up- instead of having to do it all by hand like we did. You can also work with a scanner-to-spreadsheet if you have a lot of print documents. Sometimes there are glitches with reading addresses if they aren't in a standardized format. Other times addresses are not recognized if they don't exist in Google's database. This is the main glitch we have encountered and we haven't found out all the reasons why it happens. **What problems is NationBuilder solving and how is that benefiting you?** This helped us organize different newsletter lists by area code, supporter vs. petition signer, and volunteers. We were also able to organize volunteers by their interest type and commitment level, and used this to create a whole structure for our volunteer program. Any tools relating to maps and geography helped us the most. We were able to pinpoint areas that we were missing and give more attention to that, as well as target the highest concentrated neighborhoods for more community organizing. ### 44. Using Liquid, a remarkably simple yet capable templating language, I can create custom signup pages, petitions, blogs, contests, email blasts, donation forms, etc., then teach my clients how to manage large amounts of data they will undoubtedly collect. They can then use NationBuilder's toolset to organize and target influencers which gives them the ability to grow supporters and advance their cause. **What do you dislike about NationBuilder?** NationBuilder is quite expensive for small organizations to pay for and their staff provides lackluster customer support. My clients have told me this again and again. They need to provide value for their monthly cost or lower it altogether.
