What do you like best about Nano-RK?

Resource reservation supported in Nano-RK is useful for WSN wireless sensor network. It commits access at the right time to the resources in performing important tasks, in data acquisition as well as actuator control. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Nano-RK?

It may have more difficulty when it comes to compatibility with various sensor platforms. I had intended to enhance it with a custom sensor board but found it challenging to interface it directly with Nano-RK’s existing drivers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Nano-RK solving and how is that benefiting you?

Nano-RK solved the problem in wireless sensor networks: For example, they involve the timely collection and control of data. It is deterministic in nature, eliminating chances of delay and ensuring resources are earmarked for important activities. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Nano-RK Overview

What is Nano-RK?

Nano-RK is a fully preemptive reservation-based real-time operating system (RTOS) from Carnegie Mellon University with multi-hop networking support for use in wireless sensor networks. Nano-RK currently runs on the FireFly Sensor Networking Platform as well as the MicaZ motes. It includes a light-weight embedded resource kernel (RK) with rich functionality and timing support using less than 2KB of RAM and 18KB of ROM. Nano-RK supports fixed-priority preemptive multitasking for ensuring that task deadlines are met, along with support for CPU, network, as well as, sensor and actuator reservations. Tasks can specify their resource demands and the operating system provides timely, guaranteed and controlled access to CPU cycles and network packets. Together these resources form virtual energy reservations that allows the OS to enforce system and task level energy budgets.

What do you like best about Nano-RK?

Nano-RK guarantees that tasks are still completed on time and avoids resource contention, which is essential for creating dependable WSNs. This makes it suitable in implementation in the resource-limited sensor nodes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Nano-RK?

At the time RTCC-Nano, there is no implementation of other network layers such as TCP/IP that may be required for more complex sensor network applications that require communication beyond the local network. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Nano-RK solving and how is that benefiting you?

Nano-RK solves the problem of timing and synchronization in wireless sensor networks, which involve scarce resources. The reservation-based approach ensures availability of resources for important tasks making the system deterministical. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
