Top Rated Modx Alternatives
MODX enabled the small business for which I worked to rebuild our website from the ground up and completely customize the branches and design as well as store a large inventory of products. The interface is intuitive. Fill-in-the-blank options and customizable drop-down menus make it easy for any member of our team to make changes that are saved and published immediately. The server would disconnect randomly, glitches were recurrent, and any branching issues are harder to diagnose for small businesses without an internal IT team. Access to an IT professional with experience troubleshooting MODX was extremely limited. Also, when adding content, the storage capabilities only allow for 1MB of content per upload. This caused a lot of extra work for admin, editing files down, losing image quality in the process. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Modx brings the best of both worlds for developers, it allows developers to still use their coding skills to create websites and applications but also is very flexible in terms of using plugins to also help create! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Updating the system version is a bit clunky and not as easy as the one click option other CMSs offer such as wordpress. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Developers Point of view Singe resource for each Page, Very structured File System, Easy to manage media, Templates, Chunks, Snippets.
Clients Point of view easy manager to handle all your content and assets. Easy to understand which page is related to which resource and so comfortably can manage it Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
There is no single button update available, and all the things are stored in a database. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
MODX is a remarkable intuitive CMS providing a highly learnable (and teachable) platform with as near to WYSIWYG interface as I have seen. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Nothing has struck me as a negative yet. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Lack of proper digital asset management, coding complexities in the CMS levels, lack of plugins to enable integrations with third party applications Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

MODX has a very flexible and robust architecture for user roles and content access. MODX lets you serve up roles-based content very easily, and its sophisticated caching gives you a pretty good performance trade-off. It scales well too, although Drupal remains the king of scalability in this field.
MODX has been very well architected so that you can build on top of it very quickly. That is not always true of Drupal, Joomla or WordPress. Drupal does benefit from a very long list of contributed "modules" to extend the system. But if you think you may need to do things which are not already built into the CMS or offered as an add-on - or if you are not enthusiastic about Drupal's steep learning curve - MODX Revolution may be your best bet.
Documentation is light, but the MODX community is highly responsive and helpful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Usability for non-expert users is MODX's weakest link. You may need to build or adapt a simple user interface - for which there are options.
The second-weakest link is MODX's system of roles and permissions takes work to understand. The good news is that you only need to understand it once. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

It is not easy to use, developer-focused, not suitable for multilingual sites. It is not a commonly used CMS, and the diversity of available plugins is not the same. Access to an IT professional with experience in troubleshooting. MODX was extremely limited. You may need to create or adapt a simple user interface - for which there are options.
