As a brick and mortar shop owner, I started with Miva many years ago, and have remained loyal, because they have been true to their word! Miva 9 is amazing. The admin is great, easy to use and performs more functions than I use, but growth potential for me is great. The hosting sites , dotcomhost is fantastic. Their support with Miva is superior. Never has a problem pushed back to the other to be resolved. They work as a team! Need upgrades because you can't do it (like me) or not the time, they have listed partners who are tested knowledgeable about Miva. An e-commerce site is never better. **What do you dislike about Miva?** My lack of artistic ability, and a limited budget! I like that Miva is constantly evolving and progressing with technology, while taking their clients with them. It's pretty cool to see how far the company has come since we stated using Miva back in 1999. The Miva shopping cart has not only scaled with the millions in growth over the years, they've also been able to continuously keep our site up to date as technology advances. I also really enjoy working with the Miva staff. They are professional, personable, and knowledgeable. **What do you dislike about Miva?** If I had to dislike anything thing - at times there's short delay in getting projects started. The BTO Sports website has thousands of pages, so there's a constant work load. The good news is that the Miva has taken a proactive approach to this issue and has started to hire new developers. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** Be honest, and tell them what you want. Miva is an honest company and makes it their mission to meet their client's goals. The more you communicate your needs to them, the better your outcome will be. One cool thing to note is that Miva's employees are pretty savvy. At times they exceed our initial goals. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** Currently, we're working on optimizing our mobile site. After we moved the website to a responsive model back in 2013, we've noticed a significant increase in our revenue and ecommerce conversion rate on mobile devices. In lieu of recent reports, we've noticed mobile sales have surpassed desktop sales in certain PLA accounts. BTO is using Miva and their developers to help BTO create an even more powerful mobile site to take advantage of the recent trends. ### 3. Our web developer recommended Miva over 10 years ago when we moved from a simple to complex web site - selling just a few house plans to over a 100 now. Miva makes it easy for us to add various house plan products on our own once the basic framework was set up in user-friendly method. We can even add architectural services for our clients throughout the U.S. and Canada. Not having to spend the time creating invoices for our simple services helps us keep our administrative fees down. **What do you dislike about Miva?** I have to pay more per month for using an old version of Miva. The software was written with security in mind to protect customers and business owners alike. As the software has grown and evolved, the features have become more rich and more of what the industry is asking for. In the e-commerce world, security is a must in order to remain in business. **What do you dislike about Miva?** Server side requirements that are less common than others. Miva Merchant has requirements as does any cart, part of their security is in their ability to further push and modify the underlying, but this does add to administrative overhead. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** There is a learning curve with any new system. I find this software well backed and documented with superior support and technical teams to back it up. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** Secure shopping cart meeting industry standards. Less time spent managing the cart and more time managing the store itself. The ability to have multiple stores "mall" with a change of license and configurations. The Technical Support I've received gets a grade of 99/100. Also, honestly, I have not used any other merchant platforms, other than Amazon and eBay selling (and dabbled around with Wix and the like). I guess that says something in itself. I haven't had any need to change. Maybe I'm missing out on something else out there, but I haven't had any problems with Miva. I haven't had any billing issues, either, although I have a relatively small store and simple implementation here. Haven't had any problems with modules and Miva updates. I like the new interface in version 9. As you can see, I'm happy with Miva. **What do you dislike about Miva?** When you view a Product in your Catalog in Miva Admin, you have to go back two pages to get back to the Product List/Catalog. When you go back, your previous search has been cleared. Most of the time, I am performing multiple searches on similarly labeled products, so I wish it retained my search after viewing a product's information. It's really a pain to have to retype every time. You really need to add a good builtin Shopping Cart Abandonment analysis capability. The plugin that's available is not very good, in my opinion. Abandoned Shopping Carts are one of a merchant's primary concerns with regard to shopping carts. You really should add something to help us with this. There are probably other things, but can't think of any at this time. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** I guess "Explore all your options." Due diligence. Read reviews. Miva has been good to us. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** We publish books, newsletters and courses in electronic and print form. Having used so many systems over the decade I come back to Miva each time for a 'real' commerce development. If you expect your store to be at all successful .. Start here. We've been through many production releases, patches, migrations, development, and a major merger, and Miva has made it all as painless as possible. The service and support is top notch. **What do you dislike about Miva?** The only gripe I've ever had with this platform is the use of third-party modules. Unlike Apple, Miva still seems to allow a lot of "un-vetted" modules to be installed within the platform, even if you were to purchase it from their app store. Because of this, my company makes sure to use modules from specific developers that we know offer and support superior applications. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** If you need an honest company with superior and prompt customer service, robust hosting solutions, and a slick, feature-rich, and highly customizable platform, Miva Merchant exceeds in all categories. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** Useability for our customer is always our top priority. We can edit products with ease by uploading csv files with product descriptions, prices, weights for shipping and get the edits updated to our website in a matter of seconds once the file has been updated. From offering volume pricing discounts and complex product variants, Miva gives us the ability to sell our products to the market we want to hit. **What do you dislike about Miva?** The only thing that we dislike is the ability to get updated training videos, as the company recently upgraded their platform and the most recent platform training videos are still being built. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** Invoicing and order processing has become automated via our new website. We used an early version of MIVA bundled with a 3rd part hosting for years, were very happy with it, and would probably still be using (although no longer supported). When the Innovativegatewaysolutions gateway from intuit, that accepted sales from the Miva ecommerce site and transmitted them to our bank account, stopped working we were no longer able to accept credit cards and were just about out of business. We were told on a telephone call to Intuit that it was no longer supported and we needed to apply as a new customer to use Intuit's newer product. We considered switching to the other ecommerce solution offered by our hosting company but did not like the "look and feel". We decided to convert to the latest Miva hosting and software, expecting a great deal of effort. The start-up effort was far less than we anticipated. Thanks to the exceptional help from the Miva support personnel we were able to get into production very easily including interface to credit card processing. The support people quickly helped customize the "look and feel" to meet my requirements, changed to my own graphics, and taught me how to use the power of the new Miva. Without hesitation I highly recommend Miva because of the quality of the support staff and software. **What do you dislike about Miva?** I spent too much time delaying my switch to MIva - I should have switched much sooner.. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** Get started now. It amazing how Miva and its great support staff can get you an ecommerce site that looks like you paid to program you own site. It is amazing how easy is customization with the great support staff. Because our product line is different than most consumer products it take a different cart layout. For example, a 7" sanding disc comes in 8 different grits but they all look the same. The selection is best displayed in a simple list form rather than a bunch of thumbnails that all look the same. Because of this situation we have had to program the cart ourselves rather than using common templates. When Miva 9 came out last year the prospect of rebuilding 120+ cart pages with the new cssui framework seemed daunting. I decided to give a go doing the programing myself. It was a little slow are first, but after a few calls to the helpful Miva support staff the process worked well with a good end result. We had to develop the "look & fee" ourselves as there were not templates. Miva gave us a development site to build the new cart, and was very helpful when the time came to replace the old cart with the new one. Sometimes their response to support tickets could be a little faster. All in all no complaints. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** Attend one of their national or regional conferences where you will get valuable information on the Miva products. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** In the industrial supply industry more small to medium customers are purchasing their supplies needs online. Having a strong presence has allowed us to participate in this transition. ### 12. I like that it keeps track of your inventory. That is very important for someone who has a lot of items to sell. Didn't see a good way to integrate online tickets for events through Miva Merchant. **What do you dislike about Miva?** I really disliked the difficulty to customize the templates in the Miva Merchant language. That was really hard to understand. I hate how they have the shipping set up, especially if you need to separate how different states shipping fees. There should be a module for Miva Merchant for that, especially since postal rates changes all the time and are based on weight now. Training the user on how to update their store was like a nightmare. If I can't understand it, they sure can't either. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** I would look at all your options first before deciding on what shopping site cms you would like to use. They all have their pros and cons. What works for one person may not work for someone else. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** I realized that all shopping cart sites have their ups and downs. The most thing you have to factor in is how you are processing payments. I really like Stripe for processing payments. The benefit of keeping track of inventory is really awesome and something that all shopping site cms should have in their system. ### 13. We have had an enormous amount of growth from this platform as Miva is very easy to use for small businesses that do not have an IT department. If you are selling under a 1 Million a year, Miva software is very good for beginning eCommerce applications. The GUI is easy to use and flexible for most applications. I was able to get my web site started with minimal HTML capabilities and as the company grew, we were able to do much more. **What do you dislike about Miva?** Miva Software is very good. Miva billing practices are highly unethical. We are in the process of leaving Miva Merchant for Drupal as they have recently started billed our company for $350 in fines PER MONTH because it is not practical for our company to upgrade from Miva 5.5 (which is actually version 8) to Miva 9 during the busy holiday season. Under Miva 9, we are only allowed to have one IT manager logged in at a time, they are now selling “Seats” for $50/each to have more employees logged into the store. They incorrectly estimated we were using 7 “Seats” on the OLD license and proceeded to fine us for $50/each x 7 per month. We must continue to pay this fine until our Drupal commerce site is fully operational. Miva has us trapped for now, but we will be out of this unethical billing practice soon. I strongly suggest looking at alternative options if you are considering Miva Merchant. This is not the first time we have had billing issues. In the past, they were very accommodating because we have used their software for 12 years. Our company attorneys are considering a class-action suite against Miva Merchant as a review of their license agreement we are under does not include any form of “Seat” licensing fees. They claim they are entitled to the new fines under their “Price Increase” option in the license agreement. Other merchants have also complained of similar billing problems with refusal to refund, search Miva Reviews and you will find them. My advice: RUN! **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** Unethical billing practices are forcing us away from Miva, we are moving to Drupal where we have no limitations and are free from having another company control our upgrade policy. My advice: RUN! **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** From a technical perspective, our IT department has problems working with and managing the data generated by Miva for use in other applications. 3rd party development is not as well supported as the Drupal platform. Additionally, unused shopping carts must be cleared weekly or our site WILL crash. There does not seem to be an automated way of clearing the unused carts. We use 3rd party modules, a serious source of concern for any version upgrade. ### 14. This way each store is unique. There is a nice 'community' where users offer each other help and support when we are trying to figure something out. There are also many 3rd party modules available that can provide additional features. **What do you dislike about Miva?** Sometimes it lacks certain 'stock' features that many other shopping carts have 'built-in'. But usually there is either a way to customize the feature, or a 3rd party module that can be purchased to implement the feature. Over the last couple of years, there have been some great improvements in this area. The software has been upgraded to include some of these more in demand features. The cost has increased quite a bit over the last several years making it a little less affordable for some of our smaller clients. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** I would recommend this software to an agency looking to provide an ecommerce solution to their clients. It is easy to customize and has a nice 'community' behind it. It is not the best solution for the Do-It-Your-Selfer although Miva has started to implement some features to make this possible. It just isn't there yet. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** This software has allowed us to provide our clients with a highly customizable solution to a shopping cart software at a fairly reasonable cost compared to other carts. ### 15. There are hundreds of modules to plugin that are very inexpensive to do just about anything you want. You can use Miva straight out of the box but in addition, you can utilize the toolkit module to do all kinds of programming that most websites don’t offer. For example you could program a page to say that if this product is in a particular category, then show some tidbit of information; or if a certain sequence is in the product title do something else. In addition Miva has built in ability to track affiliate sales, price groups for wholesale accounts, and membership points. This platform is an enterprise or mid-size platform, but can also be used quite effectively for the small business. **What do you dislike about Miva?** It's actually a great platform, not sure how you can dislike that. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** Miva has been around for many years, longer than most software on the market today, and has gone through serious iterations over time. Most of the canned software available on the market now is less than a few years old. I have seen reviews for Miva that don’t even understand what shopping cart software does. For example, if you expect any shopping cart software to automatically get traffic to your site without you lifting a finger, you don’t understand ecommerce. No shopping cart can do that. If you need a robust platform that adapts to your ever changing needs as you grow, this is the cart to use. If you do not know anything about html or websites, you may want to hire an expert in Miva to work with you to get you started as this software is feature rich and does not read your mind. But then again, what software does? **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have used Miva to upload and update as many as 200,000 products and do daily updates for price and quantity with very little programing involved on the back end. Some platforms don’t even allow this type of functionality at all. Some don’t allow a robots.txt file, a custom 404 page, or an htacess file. Miva is superior in this way. In addition we have programmed out both an Amazon product feed and Google feeds that are automated. Once you get used to Miva and understand a little bit about it, you can easily customize just about any type of product feed or eCommerce process that is needed. ### 16. In addition, because, Miva it not from an Open Source origin like (Drupal for example) custom development can get costly. Our product is design-build with a highly affluent clientele. The finished product is often customized further as we progress through the project. I spoke with Philip Hansen on a given Friday night three years ago. He took the time to explain the Miva product and walk me through the templates to sell our custom product. Since then the company has morphed into two entities, one for wine cellars and the other for cigars and cigar humidors. The Miva Design team has been incredible helping manage the design change and the roll out of Smokin' Betty's Cigars and what will be Wine Cellar Marketplace. What like about Miva is the "on-the-fly" customization. What I like best are the professionals at Miva that listen, care and help you get results. **What do you dislike about Miva?** I honestly have no complaints about Miva. I've read one bad review of a company whose growth seems to conflict with Mivas design and something about their billing practice. I have never had any issues like this. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** Be interactive. Understand how you want your product to stand out from your competitors. I tried other solutions but keep going back to Miva. When you get a "free cart" you get what you pay for. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** Solved a huge upgrade. Have been using the SAME mall/store I purchased in 1999! So yeah, I was due an upgrade especially since this is the *season to buy* and my client's stores needed to be 100%. What a crunch this week was preparing. Once I was done on my end, Miva had theirs done in no time. At first I was told it would take 2 days to set up a parallel store, but with the new version... then an hour later it was done. Can't beat that in my book. ### 19. The platform is able to be used as a stand-alone, fully featured website for retailers who want to do nothing more than sell product, or (as in my case) it can be integrated into a site with broader functionality in a completely seamless manner. We use Miva Merchant as the e-commerce engine on a site that makes use of two different content management systems and a home grown solution for a third type of content. Because of Miva Merchant's easily customizable nature and the fact that it does not require its own unique domain name (like some other platforms I've evaluated), we've been able to create a site where our customers interact with us in various ways and move between e-commerce and non-e-commerce sections of the site without realizing that they are moving between different back-end systems. Miva Merchant has enabled us to build a sophisticated website that makes us look much larger than we actually are and that provides our customers with the impression that we are a very credible retailer in a market where many small retailers don't appear as credible in their online presence. Additionally, there is an ecosystem of third-party providers that writes modules to give the platform functionality that the core software does not provide. Many of the features my site needs that are not included in the core platform have been provided by purchased modules. **What do you dislike about Miva?** My quibbles with the platform relate solely to the administrative interface, not the user interface that our customers see. I wish that Miva Merchant provided a built-in staging site so that we could build and test enhancements and changes and then easily push them into production, improving our development workflow and providing version control. Right now we have to run two separate instances of Miva and once we have things built in stage we need to move all the changes over manually to our production environment. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** Compare features to similarly priced solutions to see the value of the platform. Also determine if hosting with Miva Merchant or with one of their partners make the most sense for your business. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** We originally chose Miva Merchant to provide the e-commerce functionality for our brand website which contained more content than just a storefront. This was seven years ago when we launched the company. The platform has allowed us to build our on-line business and has grown with us as we've grown. We're nowhere near reaching the point where Miva Merchant will no longer serve our needs, and the platform will provide us with an environment that will support us through many more years of growth . ### 20. I have no programming skills or coding experience but I have no problems going into our admin pages and edit product information, add / delete /update. Our CTO have been a MIVA Merchant developer for longer then he cares to remember now so we don't have any issues, if the solution doesn't exist then it can be created! That flexibility allows you to utilize the Miva Merchant system as a platform for marketing your online catalog which can adjust with the ever changing needs of your customers. Test and measure. Test and measure. The other amazing thing about Miva Merchant is the community that has been built up around it. Originally introduced over a decade ago, then sold, then bought back by the original owners, the product has a terrific brand loyalty and the owners have accepted their role in nurturing a high quality community of users. You don't find this in mass market ecommerce systems. You don't find this in massive eCommerce systems. Just in this middle ground do I see such communities as for many this is the last system they'll ever need. **What do you dislike about Miva?** Miva Merchant needs more third party integrations. I've spoken in depth about this with their team and I know it is a high priority for them. This is their biggest shortcoming in my opinion. **Recommendations to others considering Miva:** If you have an SKU based inventory system, you have to accept the non-SKU format of Miva Merchant. In this case, Miva Merchant is an excellent catalog, but not a place to manage inventory in the way that other eCommerce systems do. This has been my biggest hiccup with MM migrations. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** An advanced online catalog that gets you out of the templated world of mass market ecommerce systems. With Miva Merchant, you really don't need any, especially with the new version coming out soon, but one must have is the Tool Kit module formerly developed and owned by EmporiumPlus but now owned and supported by Miva Merchant directly. It is a designer/developers life-saver. **What problems is Miva solving and how is that benefiting you?** The fact that Miva Merchant is a "hosted" solution means that you can rest assured your store will always work. There is always a company there to fully support it on top of the countless partners and developers that are part of the Miva Merchant community. We have been able to help many a business owner set up selling their products online with Miva Merchant without hassle, without them having to learn how to navigate around some overly complex mess of an admin and so on. It is plain and simple one of the best, no nonsense, feature-rich ecommerce platforms out there. ### 28. We can use our custom design templates to make the cart experience custom for each client. **What do you dislike about Miva?** We would love the back-end code to be a little more flexible as it is written in Miva Script. You must also be aware when Miva upgrades to a new version of the platform as some modules may not work. You may have to upgrade the module or get a new one all together. My original NZ site has been operating for around 12 years on a Miva platform, and the other Australian site utilised a Magento platform. The Australian site was built using a Magento platform, which in my opinion ,was an expensive mistake. I found the Magento platform less user friendly than the Miva platform, and no matter what we did to the site, it remained incredibly slow,especially in the back end. We contacted the hosting company and they said it was a site issue. We had customers contacting us, complaining about the site, so we had to make the change. I have recently commissioned Miva to build another platform for my Australian website as I have found the Miva platform far superior to the Magento alternative. The one thing I like about the Miva platform is the ease of access to developers to tweek the site as required. I joined the "design club", because , as a Pharmacist, I do not have the time or the expertise to make in depth physical changes to the website. If I have a problem I simply get in touch with miva to get the experts to make any changes This is especially important with the changing face of google, with the likes of algorithm changes. (Panda,penguin,hummingbird.......????) I have recently asked Miva to make changes to the site to comply with the latest round of algorithms, which had an undesirable effect on our natural search results. **What do you dislike about Miva?** I do not have many dislikes, although with one of the updates we lost our multiple image custom field , which was reverted back to single image.
