It's great for a self-hosted slack like communication platform. It's not quite as fancy as slack, and it moves slower but it works very well and as an operator I almost never have to deal with managing the system. Once it's set up and running, it's a work horse that just goes. Upgrades are very easy. We've upgraded the entire system several times, and have only needed a few minutes (less than 10m) each time. Mattermost was very easy to install and deploy using an Amazon AWS container and got the system up and running in less than 1 day. Has all the modern services that you would expect for a team communication platform. Supports SSL out of the box and overall just very easy to set up and run.
