What do you like best about Magento Open Source?

It's flexibility - it can be used for practically everything. It's Open Source, so very likely it already exists (even though it might be for a price), and if it doesn't, you can create it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

It's by default pretty slow and required a lot of hardware and caching to make it usable. The optimizing itself is a pretty fun challenge though, one I personally like. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:

It's a steep learning curve, it'll take months to years before you really figure it out and know how to do the more complicated stuff. Once you go past a certain level though, it's power comes through the complexity and you'll learn how to build great webshops and E-commerce solutions through Magento. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?

We have various customers that have challenging webshops, e.g. where the preferred delivery method depends on many product attributes, so it becomes a pretty complicated matrix rate delivery type of system. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Magento Open Source?

Because Magento doesn't pretend to be anything other than an ecommerce solution, it's relatively easy and quick to deploy a well-functioning ecommerce solution that can deliver and maintain an up-to-date customer experience if developed correctly. Integration toolkits for a wide range of back-office applications are available, whilst direct integration can be achieved if you need hand-off some of Magento's functionality to other applications.

In more recent times, Magento have improved what used to be a rather long-winded and incomplete update/upgrade process and iterations are now more frequent and focused. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?

The pricing differential between the Community and Enterprise Editions encourages many clients to choose Community and end up seriously compromising their capabilities and resilience. Probably the biggest issue is the quality variance in the developer base, where even Magento's attempts at training and validation are no guarantee of real understanding or good development practice, so you need to do your homework.

A good ongoing relationship with a specialist developer is necessary, as Magento does have plenty of hidden interdependencies. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:

Make sure you have very comprehensive user-focused and customer-focused specifications and benefits requirements.

Don't be afraid to evaluate several developers.

Make sure you have a staging environment. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?

Competitive ecommerce user experience for sub-£25m revenue clients. Improved deployment speed and ability to implement small customisations quickly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Magento Open Source?

Content and product updates can be made with little to no knowledge of html and css Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?

The merchandising and promotions features are not very robust and leave much to be desired as one's business grows larger. We will be moving to Magento Enterprise in the next few months, which will solve many of these issues for us. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Magento Open Source:

Definitely consider Magento Enterprise over Magento Community if you can afford the licensing fees. The functionality and customization options will be much more robust and help you to grow your business faster. Magento Community does not have any support or account management, but Magento Enterprise does. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Magento Open Source solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are able to have a solid web business on their free, open source platform. We were able to spend more money on our marketing to help grow the site in the beginning, instead of spending money on a paid platform, which was instrumental in our website's early success.
