A lack of backward compatibility is probably one of the few things i dislike about the framework. For me, backward compatible is holy but i understand sometimes it hinders the progress. 2 of the best parts in my opinion are the Eloquent and Artisan. Eloquent ORM makes the queries way more organized and simpler to go through for a reviewer and even the programmer himself/herself. Artisan is just amazing at everything it does. The whole experience of building an application gets so much nicer and easier.
