Ease of Deployment and Robust Performance: Tomcat8 and Java on Amazon Linux offers a seamless and highly reliable environment for deploying and managing Java-based web applications. The compatibility between Tomcat8 and Java runtime reduces the hassle of configuration, allowing me to focus more on development rather than troubleshooting server issues.
Amazon Linux adds another layer of efficiency and security, providing a stable and secure operating system tailored for the AWS ecosystem. This perfect blend ensures optimal performance of my applications with reduced latency and higher uptime. Plus, the ability to easily scale resources up or down based on the application's need is incredibly valuable for handling varying loads.
Amazon Linux also offers streamlined package management and security features, which when coupled with Tomcat8's own set of security configurations, create a very secure environment for hosting Java applications. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
While Tomcat8 and Java runtime on Amazon Linux offer a strong combination of ease of use and performance, there are a few areas where the experience could be improved:
1. Limited Enterprise Features: Unlike full-fledged application servers like WildFly or WebSphere, Tomcat is limited in terms of built-in enterprise-grade functionalities. This means that for more complex applications, you might need to implement additional solutions.
2. Learning Curve: For users new to AWS and Amazon Linux, there can be a steep learning curve to get everything set up correctly, especially if you are accustomed to other operating systems or cloud providers.
3. Documentation: Although there is substantial documentation available, finding the right resources for your specific needs can be time-consuming. More consolidated and beginner-friendly guides would be beneficial.
4. Compatibility Issues: While generally good, compatibility between Amazon Linux and certain third-party software can sometimes be an issue, requiring workarounds or additional configurations.
5. Costs: Running a full stack with AWS services, along with Amazon Linux and Tomcat8, can become expensive as your application scales, especially if you're making use of multiple AWS features.
6. GUI: Amazon Linux is often run headless, without a graphical user interface (GUI), which might not be as user-friendly for those accustomed to GUI-based system management."
Despite these drawbacks, the robustness and scalability offered by Tomcat8 on Amazon Linux make it a strong choice for hosting Java applications, but potential users should be aware of these limitations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
