What do you like best about IBM i?

The IBM iSeries is not only powerful but also extremely resilient. with 100% uptime, who can argue with statistics of this level. Also, no known malware or viruses in the wild I am aware of so one of the more secure server solutions available. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about IBM i?

The interface is not for everyone and involves learning the IBM lingo, abbreviations and alphabetty spaghetti That said nothing too advanced here so don't worry about any steep learning curve the basics will be picked up very quickly and does not need the prior knowledge of any other programming language although SQL will come in handy for pulling reports from the back end. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering IBM i:

If you are looking for a robust platform for many business applications you need look no further you have found your solution here. We have had no downtime in almost 20 years. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is IBM i solving and how is that benefiting you?

Stability and reliability for our ERP system. No downtime = great benefits. Backup has also been eased recently with the addition of a compatible backup and recovery system able to take file-level copies from the iSeries and replicate to off-site storage also. What do you like best about IBM i?

I like how easy it is to set up the OS and maintain dataQ for various users as well as production reports which needs to be printed. Database is flexible and hardware performance is great for day to day workflow management. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about IBM i?

API is kind of old and navigation is very static. The OS support for external application to the cloud or digital signature and automation stuff is very hard to integrate. Also, if you have network printer all over the place then manually managing and configuring each printer with its associated dataQ is very time consuming. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering IBM i:

Make the cloud based solution more robust so that migrating from on prem. is easy and fast. Also the API needs to be updated since the new interface can integrate many modern features to plug the external workflows. OS should be also capable to attach the external reference links to their specific IBMi records. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is IBM i solving and how is that benefiting you?

We have general document created like invoices, PO, accounting reports and month end reports which different users can use it to do their day to day work. We also consult our clients to integrate their IBMi solution with custom development and other solutions that can enhance their ERP system workflow. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about IBM i?

I have been an IBM i programmer for the past 25 years. I like it because it's very reliable server. Always up 24/7, no downtime, unless you perform an occasional maintenance. The hardware architecture is very secure. IBM i can't be infected by a PC virus. Viruses cannot hide in RPG and CL programs or physical and logical files. You can also use the IBM i as a server for other applications like SAP. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about IBM i?

There's nothing I dislike about the machine. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering IBM i:

It's a very reliable server especially if you are considering housing your business' application system. It's definitely worth the investment. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is IBM i solving and how is that benefiting you?

IBM i had been very useful in my work. I've worked with different application systems and ERPs that reside in IBM i and the companies I've worked for relied mostly on these application systems to run their business. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about IBM i?

We love our IBM i systems. They work 24x7x365 and don't need much over site by an operations staff. The hardware and software are all supported by IBM. Responsiveness by IBM support is great. The hardware runs all the time and does not have to be reset like windows based systems on a regular basis. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about IBM i?

IBM timing on phasing out hardware has increased in the last few years. Hardware only 5 years old is getting put off service eligibility. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering IBM i:

I would recommend the system to support your business. It is not a dead platform like others think. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is IBM i solving and how is that benefiting you?

We run our full business applications suite of software on the system. The software continues to support our business needs and IBM keeps investing in the platform to support newer technologies. We love that IBM continues to look to the future with the platform. The system has to be available 24x7 362 days a year for the 5 facilities. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about IBM i?

IBM i (we call it ERPLX in our organization) is an incredibly flexible program. Within itself it includes dozens of programs, so much so that it is almost a one stop shop for anything related to order entry, invoicing, shipping, and inventory management. Being of an older design similar to a console, it tends to run fairly quickly as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about IBM i?

Every keystroke must be specifically what the program expects, otherwise it will lock up rather than ignore the irrelevant stroke. It can crash easy. It's very unforgiving to the new user. It is so powerful that a small error can cause a tremendous problem downstream. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering IBM i:

Be sure to learn it's uses inside and out; it can be as much a value about the organization as a hindrance. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is IBM i solving and how is that benefiting you?

We use this program for all of our order entry, invoice, shipping, inventory management, customer databasing. It is the backend for our entire business. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
