The formatting tools have improved a lot since I started using Hemingway (~5 years ago, I think). All suggestions are clear and contextualized helpfully with the color-coding and dropdowns. I love the ability to switch from writing to editing mode, so you can write clean and then turn on the edits/suggestions. Built-in word counter, time to read, and other basic things are all there and helpful as well. I'll have more on this in the Dislike section, but I think it can be very helpful in an academic setting to help people cut out the jargony, overly-formal academic-ish language that creeps into some emails/communications. **What do you dislike about Hemingway?** As the title says, the tool doesn't run a comprehensive grammar check a la Grammarly, Bartleby, etc. - but for free, without a sign-in, this is just fine. I think its use does require careful consideration; I wouldn't recommend this to my creative writing students or faculty, but for disciplines or jobs that need to state their points clearly, the style can be helpful. I don't think the goal should be to homogenize writing styles, but aiming for clarity and communication never hurts. **Recommendations to others considering Hemingway:** There's no reason not to use at least the browser version - it's free and helpful, and you can see if you want to grab the desktop version for $20. Set your expectations ahead of time; it won't do an exhaustive grammar search, so keep another solution for that in your pocket. **What problems is Hemingway solving and how is that benefiting you?** It helps me communicate more clearly, tailor my writing to state my points, and get my words in order before sharing with faculty or other stakeholders. There isn't much to dislike honestly. You can use the web version free forever with no restrictions. My favorite features by far are the readability grade level and the grammar suggestions. I don't always use Hemingway's suggestions in my communications, but I do find it incredibly useful when tailoring to a certain audience and for the type of message I want to come across. For example, if I'm writing a general communication to my company and want it to be short and to the point, I'd want to meet the "passive goal" voice and have a general readability of grade 6. However, if I'm drafting a specialized or technical communication, I can draft my communication in a higher readability grade level. Whenever I am stuck on a word or am in a mad-dash to type a paragraph or two out, Hemingway has my back. It identifies all my errors and provides suggestions for me. The free version is excellent for my needs. It's a very dependable tool with a great system of words and suggestions to make your writing better. Besides, if you name your product after one of my favorite writers, it has to be good. And it certainly lives up to the experience with ease of use. **What do you dislike about Hemingway?** I wouldn't say I like its user interface. I think there can be improvements to make the product more attractive (to a broader audience), rather than seem old and boring because it certainly is not. I also experience some lag, but I have yet to confirm whether it's my computer or not. My biggest issue with this product is that I have to paste in the words and recommendations into other software I am using such as Microsoft Word or browsers. That's about it. **What do you dislike about Hemingway?** It's not a very smart tool. Most of what it tells you is whether your sentence is long and whether you have an instance of passive voice. But even the passive thing isn't 100% accurate. If I was to say, "it's failed," as in, "it has failed," the software doesn't even realize it's passive. Also, the "hard to read" thing is a joke. I'm not sure how they calculate it, but it has to be a very simple formula. Maybe it just adds up the punctuation marks and words. Not a very accurate indicator of something actually being hard to read. Anyways, this tool is not very good, and I can't see any reason for using it (besides that it's free). **What problems is Hemingway solving and how is that benefiting you?** Having a unified voice across a writing team. It has a color for each of those, and it highlights things in your document with those colors. You can see what's going on with one look. But the style that Hemingway promotes is not usually the goal I had in writing.
