There are many issues with Greenhouse that were discussed with their sales team but ultimately fell short of our expectations. First among them is their incompatibility with Indeed’s remote posting guidelines. Unlike several other ATSs, such as ClearCo or PinPoint, Greenhouse requires users to select a city, state, and country when creating a job. This setup works fine for in-person roles, but as a fully remote organization, Greenhouse negatively impacts our ability to post jobs accurately and attract talent. There is no workflow or workaround to accommodate the needs of remote companies unless you want to post jobs in all 50 states nationwide.
We post jobs based on professional licenses that are state-specific, and Greenhouse does not support statewide remote postings. Instead, we are forced to pick a random city, severely limiting our visibility to potential candidates.
Additionally, the self-scheduling tool lacks basic functionality. It allows unlimited interviews to be booked on a single day without any buffers before or after. This tool was sold to us as comparable to Calendly, yet it falls far short. The only workaround is to manually place holds or block off time on your calendar—messy and unnecessarily complicated.
The scheduling tool in general is underdeveloped compared to other ATSs. In most ATSs I’ve worked with, you can bulk-send a set number of interview slots to multiple candidates, and the system updates in real time as candidates select their times. Not in Greenhouse. Instead, you have to request a candidate’s availability, then manually schedule the interview, then send a separate email confirming the scheduled time—lots of back and forth, while cheaper solutions handle this much better.
Lastly, they don’t tell you upfront, but you don’t get a dedicated implementation specialist. Instead, you attend open office hours, where you must reserve a spot in advance and wait up to 50 minutes just to ask a simple question. Chat support is an option, but responses feel rushed, and they don’t seem interested in helping with complex issues.
Overall, we’ve been extremely disappointed. We could tailor our workflows to work around Greenhouse’s limitations, but we shouldn’t have to. More than anything, the inability to post statewide remote jobs means our recruiting efforts are effectively dead in the water. Greenhouse’s response? “We know it’s a popular request, and we’re working on it.” From what I’ve heard, they’ve been saying that for years, and we don’t expect to see any changes—they’re too big to care.
Advice to other recruiters and HR pros: Look elsewhere and fully vet the topics I listed above. There are better solutions out there, and we’re kicking ourselves for not choosing them. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
