I really appreciate having automated tests and deployments easy with CI/CD which is natively on repository,so I don't need additional services. GitHub Copilot boosts me while I type a common code boilerplates, unit tests and depend bot ,secret scanning alert me on vlunerable dependencies and exposed keys really quickly, I love having all the checks at the same place, in a few keystrokes. Project Tracking GitHub Projects is alright if your use case of project management and tracking task is super simple but, they definitely lack the sophisticated sprint and reporting functionality offered by Jira. Testing debugging Local Testing the GitHub Action pipelines with errors sucks a lot and most of time take a couple trial commits before everything works as you imagine. The best feature of GitHub is the fact that everything is concentrated around the code itself: version control, code review, CI/CD, and collaboration all happen within the same ecosystem. Versioning and branching allow me to safely experiment since I can always go back in case something goes wrong. Most of the time when using GitHub, I do my work in pull requests — I review the diffs, comment on changes, request modifications, and merge after everything is checked. The Actions tab in CI/CD is another big feature of GitHub — I am able to setup automatic tests and deployment processes without having to manage other services. In terms of open-source contribution, GitHub is pretty much the de-facto standard place where everything happens, which means that it feels natural to contribute to any projects or to publish my own there. What stands out the most is the fact that in the case of very large repositories, everything seems to be slow – page loading, diffs rendering, and git operations too. For instance, when you are working with several years of history or several thousand commits, it all starts lagging. The price of Actions is also rather high in case when you are using CI/CD pipelines heavily – even though the free tier is good for smaller projects. In terms of user experience, the interface of GitHub has significantly evolved, however, there are still many settings that require many clicks to get to – you have to dig through different menus to find particular webhooks, change repository permissions, or set complex branch protection rules. The notification system is another area that makes using GitHub uncomfortable – it generates a lot of notifications, while getting it tuned for your needs requires efforts that are not really necessary. Another problem I would mention is lack of good project management features – although Issues and Projects have gotten much better since their introduction, for bigger teams that need roadmaps, backlogs, and sprint tracking there is not enough yet. In the recent past I would have said that since its the most dominant git product in the industry, the seamlessness is the best part about it, but now I think the best aspect has to be github copilot, people are sleeping on it and its most certainly a great AI product / agent / harness whatever you want to call it, but its coding performance is excellent.
