What do you like best about GitHub?

The overall UI/UX design of GitHub is great to use. The ability to limit access for certain people and teams to certain repositories also helps keep our access control clean. The introduction of automatic reviewer assignments from a team has also greatly helped our team in achieving balanced and timely reviews. Then, GitHub's integration with all CI/CD-related tools works great as well; we have used Azure Pipelines, GitHub Actions, and Google Cloud Build with no issues. The introduction of GitHub Actions has also reduced our costs and improved our deployment speeds greatly. My overall experience in creating pull requests, assigning reviewers, giving reviews, and approving and merging works smoothly. There are numerous other features that GitHub provides that we are yet to experiment with. GitHub's integration with Slack also further helps me to identify and prioritise what needs my attention. I also use the API a lot to pull statistics into PowerBI about our usage and where we can improve, and the API works great! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about GitHub?

My one dislike is that GitHub Actions does not play too well with private submodule repositories, and this has made it difficult to manage as we need to define a secret for a specific user (who might leave the company) to pull the repository. The number of Actions on the marketplace is still limited. The way the teams are displayed and how repositories are assigned can be confusing. It's sometimes difficult to know who has access and what still needs to be assigned. The way the checks work on pull requests for GitHub Actions also displays incorrectly, and I would like to have more control over that or if there was better documentation. I would also like better limits on the API and more effective ways to retrieve issues, who is assigned and who has approved. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is GitHub solving and how is that benefiting you?

To effectively manage software projects across multiple repositories. Having all our applications properly version controlled and their changes properly reviewed before making any deployments. It also increases our deployment times by having a central place to manage our software projects and being able to know what is happening across multiple projects at any given time. What do you like best about GitHub?

GitHub has a well-featured range of services that cater to many parts of the development life cycle, from hosting the code with a wide range of tools to examine the code historically, to being able to do other things with it, like deploy the code in a CI/CD pipeline. I like the GitHub integrations with other 3rd party services as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about GitHub?

GitHub has spawned a wide range of tools that are similar to services offered by other parties and they sometimes are not nearly as user-friendly as the offerings from companies focussing on their niche (like running automated tests), but the choice is yours and GitHub doesn't force you to use them. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is GitHub solving and how is that benefiting you?

Being able to host my code in a secure location with excellent availability is important as well as being able to inspect changes to the code over time, as with the use of commit logs and git blame functionality. The use of Pull Requests (PRs) is invaluable as a tool to drive peer review of code through the development workflow. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about GitHub?

It is an excellent tool for version control, with its user-friendly UI, it's swift to adapt to. It contains numerous features that make the life of a Developer easy, like Comments and reviews on Pull requests, easy access to the path of files, and an Inbuilt fix option to make changes to code and commit it through UI itself rather than going to IDE. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about GitHub?

It is overall a good tool with no cons. Just additional feedback to the developer team of Github could be if they can display the code before and after review comments on the same screen where the comment was left. It would make it easier for the reviewer to verify. It's a very version-controlling tool; I have been using it for the past four years. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is GitHub solving and how is that benefiting you?

GitHub solves the problem of code reviews and approvals and makes it smooth both for the developer and the reviewer. Creation, forking, merging and reverting are all single click functions, making them very easy to handle. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about GitHub?

GitHub's UI is easy to interact and repository uploading is just matter of some commands. Contributors options in private repository allows to peer coding with firends without exposing to public. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about GitHub?

Version control is one of the github features but a new person finds it difficult to how to use. There are not proper instructions to how to merge previous versions. And new update in security policy that password can't be used when pulling a repo also confused new developers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is GitHub solving and how is that benefiting you?

The most feature i used is peer code reviewing especially in private repos. It saved the time as now we don't have to share the code individually as a file, the other can easily pull/clone my repo and suggest changes. Continuous delivery also saved time, previously I had to individually upload the code and upadate the server. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
