Having built and managed multiple ecommerce stores on Wordpress for more than 13 years, I was looking for an alternative. Wordpress is incredibly flexible and customisable but comes with a constant time drain of testing and updating combinations of many different Wordpress plugins, just to keep things functioning. Plus, there is the responsibility and cost of managing your own tax and compliance. I started looking for a Merchant of Record to free up more of my time to focus on the creative side of our businesses.

I researched the options and Fungies.io was the best fit for functionality and customisations within a store builder that you can connect to your own domain. The pricing model of Fungies taking a small percentage of your sales, instead of you paying a subscription for every environment and plugin is refreshing. You will always have payment gateway and accounting fees however you build your websites and apps, so this feels more symbiotic than the alternatives. Fungies support is very responsive and the developers are constantly working hard to bring new features requested by their community.

I don't dislike anything about Fungies.io. The ability to customise every minute detail is obviously much more limited than Wordpress but so is any other website builder. Lot of product types, subscriptions, offers and variants, digital delivery - all needed for digital Merchant of Record. We use it daily and UI is practical and effective.

There are a lot of platforms to which game developers can bring their products, but Fungies is the only one really putting the distribution in their hands. It is easy to use, has good customization options, and you can even DNS a subdomain on your own website into it, basically creating your own web store. Plus, now Fungies is integrated with Shopify, meaning that this is the only platform where you could create a unified shopping experience between digital and physical goods, if you wanted to take that route. It's very impressive to see how dedicated the Fungies team has been to growing and improving the product over the last few months, and to see the shape it's already in. As mentioned, it's a young platform, so there are going to be bugs. Plus, it's not free, nor inexpensive, even at the lowest tier. This is not itch.io or GameJolt. At $19/month, it can be a major B2B investment, especially for indies. Think of it as needing around 1-5 sales/month to cover the cost, depending your game.
