In addition to it's file support, it has amazing hardware support for the various transcription foot pedals out there. **What do you dislike about Express Scribe?** My biggest gripe about Express Scribe is that once you purchase the professional version, if your version goes out of date, there doesn't seem to be a place to find older versions on the web to be able to re-install the version you have paid for, hence forcing another purchase if you need to restore your computer. **Recommendations to others considering Express Scribe:** Definitely work with the free version before committing to purchasing. You might find that a specific device (pedal) may not be compatible, but these are very far and few between. The software also comes with a decent trial period to really let you get a feel for it prior to purchasing, which is great. I've used that for aspiring transcriptionists to make sure they have a knack for typing prior to hiring, and it's made a big difference. It's a fairly intuitive software that's easy to learn and use, yet it has the capability to be customized for optimization. It works well with a foot pedal and gives control over playback speed. There are several help resources online available to help if you have questions or issues. Another upside is that you can also set up hotkeys and customize controls to enable you to be more productive while typing, resulting in faster turnaround times. **What do you dislike about Express Scribe?** It's not a huge downside, but it would be nice if there were simple audio enhancing features built into Express Scribe. Currently, if I have a poor quality audio file, I have to manipulate it in a different software prior to loading it into Express Scribe. This aspect is least helpful because I have to spend time going to an outside application and editing the audio. Having very simple enhancing options would save me a few steps and would allow my transcriptionists to be a bit more self-reliant with those types of issues, as currently I'm the only person who can enhance audio files. I would also like to see both the elapsed and remaining times, not just one or the other; this would be an easy update that would allow me to see exactly where I am in the file and set goals for myself around productivity. **Recommendations to others considering Express Scribe:** My advice is to utilize the free trial! It's a great way to get your feet wet and make sure the software will meet your needs prior to purchasing. The price is very reasonable for what you get, with many customization options. Machine transcription often has errors and does not pick up things that might be happening in the background, such as someone whispering answers or picking up on distractors. We use humans for transcribing rather than software because we do strict verbatim transcribing. A hot key can be used to automatically insert timestamps into the transcript, or manually insert timestamps at key points throughout the document. The use of timestamps allows to correlate the audio track with the exact position in the written transcript. **What do you dislike about Express Scribe?** I do not like that Express Scribe is not available for Linux. In addition, if you reinstall your operating system, you may encounter problems to reactivate Express Scribe. **What problems is Express Scribe solving and how is that benefiting you?** During my undergraduate work, I relied on Express Scribe to transcribe hours of audio and video interviews. Then to transcribe the audios of very extensive work meetings of projects where the participation was of more than 10 people or more ### 26. It has a free trial version to test its capabilities and decide if it's worth buying the license. Additionally, it is very lightweight software, doesn't have many requirements, and its development is very good, as it doesn't take up much space and its download is quick and efficient. **What do you dislike about Express Scribe?** The interface is a bit complex at first, so diving in without informing oneself and then pretending to discover the program as it is used is practically impossible without using a guide. Mastering the program one hundred percent takes time, practice, and the program's functions are difficult to find if you haven't used them more than once. Therefore, when working with it, it can be slower and even a bit more cumbersome. **Recommendations to others considering Express Scribe:** Express Scribe has a help document, in which it offers a lot of necessary information to start testing the capabilities of this software. It is necessary to be somewhat up to date before starting to use it. **What problems is Express Scribe solving and how is that benefiting you?** Thanks to the compatibility with so many formats, it's a matter of using the software without much else behind it, without worrying about what type of format is accepted and without having to resort to re-conversions or having to do anything before being able to perform a transcription. ### 27. I also have found it lags sometimes on rewinding but the issue seems to come and go.
