Not just an XML-DBMS but a simple and immediate working environment, eXist-db is an application server to create and consume your XML sources.
Written in Java, it is fully cross-platform, the requirements, as reported in the manual, are just:
--> At least Java version 8 (since eXist-db 3.0)
-->About 200Mb of disk space for the installation
-->At least 512Mb memory to run [for a very basic server don't run with less than 4Gb of dedicated RAM]
Full of samples and well documented, with a strong community on the back.
You can run a full web environment, and expose your XML sources with a few effort.
Exist-db embeds Apache Lucene, so It is easy to integrate powerful search functions for your sources.
You can manage your xml-db and the web environment with a native xQuery/xPath implementation: a complete set of functions to scan, write or edit xml, to admin the application server or manage web pages.
You can write and deploy your app with a built-in editor: eXide.
You can monitor your performances with a built-in dashboard: Monex.
Exist-db has a built in REST-Style Web API, which provides a simple and quick way to access the database. To use this API, all one needs is an HTTP client, which is provided by nearly all programming languages and environments.
As final note I have to say that the eXist-db community has a lot of interest in the TEI project, this is a merit point for adopting it in Digital Humanities projects. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
Not always stable, you'll need a deep profiling of Java resource balancer to go in production.
Sometimes more verbose examples would be welcome. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
