## Esri ArcGIS Reviews
  ### 1. ESRI review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Oil & Energy | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 03, 2018

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Some of the best things I like about the software are: 1) large user community, 2) relatively easy to use, 3) excellent tech support, 4) relatively inexpensive

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

Some of the best things I dislike about the software are: 1) sometimes it runs slow, especially on older PCs, 2) I feel that the asking price on their extensions is too high and instead ESRI should make the pricing more flexible like maybe priced by usage or something similar.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

Recommend running through all tutorials. They are quite useful.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Managed our business assets effectively. Increased efficiency in departments by using it.

**Reviewed Date:** October 19, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Wide array of processing tools available

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

Extremely high costs for advanced license

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

If you can afford it, this product is the way to go. It is the industry standard and offers far more support than any other GIS software. A standard license for business use is upwards of $7,000 per user, but many companies (including mine) find that this cost is offset by the benefits of this product.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Easily and quickly produce and analyze high-quality geographic data. The software allows us to solve an array of geographic problems and is easily shareable with other users and online.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Environmental Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 23, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Esri software always has a good help database, allowing newer users to learn how to perform functions and get answers quickly. For newer users, the help function and search are your friends. You can do basically anything with ArcGIS. There are so many field for which this software is useful. You can upload a lot of data and produce clean, professional maps. Symbology is easy to work with and there are many options.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

The more information you add into one project the slower the software tends to work, which occasionally causes crashes in the product. Sometimes errors occur because you missed a step in the data processing, the software provides you with information that says an error occurred, but sometimes the error messages are vague.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

The older or slower the computer you have the slower the software runs. Get a fast operating computer! Also, save often! You don't want to lose work because it crashed.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have used this software to look at bathymetric data. Using polygons to average GIS points to see whats going on temporally, erosion? deposition? etc. Also, I have used ArcGIS to observe historical site data.

  ### 13. Very functional

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Relations | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2018

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

ArcMap has so many different ways to create maps and visualize data.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

Sometime my program runs slowly. My ArcMap freezes when I put "too much"data in and it slows the whole system.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

Get training first. It's not a simple program.

  ### 18. Skip arcGIS. It's an obsolete and sensationally bad software

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 26, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Not much really to like about arcGIS. In my use, I have not liked anything about arcGIS. Even its UI looks like it's from the early 2000s when compared to contemporary applications.

However, arcGIS does have a slew of interesting products for spatial analysis, presentation creation, interactive maps, and website creation that no other competing product has. I have never used these suites but from what I have seen from my colleagues, these elements work decently and produce nice results.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

It's slow and that's an understatement. I use arcGIS for spatial data work on the rather powerful office machines and it still takes minutes to draw a CSV layer? Using QGIS on my ultrabook, I can perform identical operations in less than a second!

Moreover, it's projection and drawing systems are clunky. It takes me hours (sometimes days) to map layers onto the same projections and even then I frequently do not get the desired result. On the other hand, on an open source software such as QGIS, projections are a minor nuisance and take seconds to resolve (even if you're not familiar with the software).

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

There are other free or substantially cheaper solutions (ie QGIS) that are faster, less buggy, more user-friendly, and easier to use than ArcGIS. Moreover, the transition from arcGIS to these products is easy since the alternatives are quite similar in layout and function (on the surface) to ArcGIS products.

Do yourself a favour, make your life easier and switch away from ArcGIS.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I primarily use to assemble spatial data or use spatial files to attach geographical data to non-geocoded data.

  ### 19. The science of where

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 24, 2018

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Helps to understand geograpgically data analysis

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

Lots of database management. Software can process slow

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Addressing, zoning

  ### 20. ArcGIS - Spatially analyze data

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Cosmetics | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 12, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

I like ArcGIS because it allows me to spatially analyze data.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

While there is nothing I actually dislike about the ArcGIS software, I find the method of inserting tables onto a map a little cumbersome.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Any problems in which data has a spatial characteristic is easily analyzed and solved using the ArcGIS software. Often, this involves demographic data. When it comes down to it, ArcGIS is basically an aid in decision-making. It helps to have a visual representation of numeric data.

  ### 21. NOt good for replication

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 26, 2018

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Maps created are good looking, and easy to create once .shp files are loaded

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

The process cannot be automatized easily. In theory, it could’ve written in python, but there is no user friendly way of saving your steps to do a map over again

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

Don’t use if you will need to replicate often

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Map making using georeferenced data

Licenses are very expensive. With time I’d like to see their costs come down.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Solving issues related to building corridors of key land holdings.

  ### 24. Amazing product

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 27, 2018

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

From students to professionals it is a very versatile software with all of it's different applications.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

The price of a single license for this software is through the roof, but that's because it's the best.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use it for map making and data integration. It allows you to integrate many different data sets into one.

  ### 25. No other product like it

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 16, 2018

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

I’ve been using ESRI GIS for the last 10 years and there’s is no other platform that seamlessly integrates and visually displays spatial information.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

It is not always the most straightforward software to print from, I often have to PDF and then print from the PDF.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Creating maps, analyzing data over a region, typically related to engineering design and planning

  ### 26. Powerful software

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Renewables & Environment | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 07, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Making interactive maps with ArcGIS online, visualizing data from research projects using the desktop version.

Need training to effectively use this software.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Making interactive maps for the public, sharing data with the public and colleagues.

  ### 27. GIS software

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 27, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

more transparency in long term product development plans for customers > 1 year

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

geospatial data, analysis, patterns, maps

  ### 28. ArcGIS is the Industry Standard

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shannon H. | Undergraduate Researcher in Biology, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 12, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

I like that I can use ArcGIS to communicate with fellow scientist all over the world about a specific area I am researching. We can share updated updated maps and data instantly. I like that Esri also makes softwares such as Collector and Survey123 to work hand-in-hand with ArcGIS.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

The software is very expensive. Especially for students who are in the scientific community. I wish there was an educational discount for students/faculty. I remember the course I took back in college had us download the free 60 day trial. However, that did not last the entire semester.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

If you are taking field research seriously, you must know this software. I have used it for every job I have had.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are utilizing the software to record wildlife presence and abundance. It's used to record how many species of milkweed at found in a specific plot to how many Monarch larvae were recorded on blooming plants. When we as a team are dealing with over a dozen plots, it helps us keep track of where we are going and which plot was which. That seems to easy to do until you are out in the middle of rolling grassland prairies and everything looks the same.

  ### 29. Just too expensive, not practical

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Environmental Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 15, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

The product is easy to learn and use even for beginners. There are wide variety of tools to address many different problems. It is the most widely used Geographic Information System software, hence there are several tutorials and help available online. The large user community is always there to back up questions you may have on different forums, apart from ESRI's own free training materials. Spatial analysis capabilities are top notch. ArcOnline is gaining popularity and the simplicity is attracting more users.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

Cost - not practical from a developing countries' perspective and the high cost nullifies the benefits it provide, when compared to many open source GIS software available today. It is not the best when it comes to analysis satellite imagery. The software is also quite heavy, to run on a old machine with less RAM could be challenging.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

I would recommend to consider open source options first before using ArcGIS

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Environmental management, disaster management, health and planning

  ### 30. The current standard for geospatial analysis.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** John H. | Graduate Researcher, Higher Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 17, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

ArcGIS is undeniably powerful. There's so much going on behind the scenes that even after years of working with it, I find new tools that sometimes come in handy. I also like that the user community is so active, and so it's easy to find documentation online.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

The interface is clunky and slow. All of this adds up to wasted time, but more importantly, it leads to headaches for the user.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

Take the time to learn the software, but also consider learning some of the open source alternatives. Quite frankly, Esri's offering is expensive and so not for everyone.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

One recent example: I was able to conveniently separate the data I needed from the very large dataset they were provided in using spatial joins.

  ### 31. Great GIS mapping tool

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shaun M. | Graduate Teaching Assistant - Planetary Science, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

Extensive plugins, easy python integration, toolsets that are able to map out vast data sets and provide professional looking printed maps and web apps. ArcGIS also provides valuable data analyses tools that allow for valuable assessments across many disciplines including population dynamics, hazard control and geology.,

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

a clunky interface will crash often, so save as often as possible.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

ESRI press tutorials are a must when learning this product, also be sure to save often.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Geologic mapping, site management for paleontological digs, grain analyses of petrographic thin sections.

  ### 32. Ideal for data viz and spatial analysis

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

data analysis, research, the creation of new information, data visualization

  ### 34. ArcGIS is a staple!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Michelle L. | Project Scientist, Environmental Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 28, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

There's not much I cannot do in ArcGIS. I can analyze drainage patters, topography, identify potential streams and wetlands, georeference historical maps and site plans to create overlays, calculate stream lengths and construction impacts. It can do everything I need as an environmental consultant. And when I am done, I can format the final map to look perfect everytime!

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

It can be very slow... It takes a few minutes to open and uses a lot of RAM. I also wish it would permanently remember links so I can copy and paste maps into new folders without constantly having to reconnect shapefile and data links.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

Get a fast computer! It may cost more upfront, but it will save your employees a lot of time and therefore money! Also, go through a couple trainings. There's 5 different ways to do everything in GIS and learning the ins and outs will allow you to use the program to its potential. You can wrestle through it and will never even scratch the surface of what it is capable of!

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have to create an array of environmental maps outlining soil types, vegetation cover, surfaces waters, etc. In using ArcGIS, I can create solid maps to guide our field efforts. This helps reduce time in the field by making it more efficient. Additionally, it gives our company a professional edge over our competition.

  ### 35. Good mapping tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Selena O. | Staff Geologist, Environmental Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 12, 2016

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

ArcGIS is the premier mapping software to use for professional mapping. The package comes with ArcCatalog, which is great for organizing files. There are many ways to use the software, if you can learn how the functions work together. Everything is referenced on a coordinate system, which means everything you do is fundamentally related to the real world. The raster uses and analyses are high-level as well.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

The program can be error-prone, takes a lot of space, and randomly crash. It can be difficult to change coordinate systems if the data you're starting with has a non-specific coordinate system. There are a lot of uses, which is a double-edges sword: it is easy to learn enough to use in everyday basic applications, but it takes a lot of time and effort to really become an expert in using ArcGIS. While the analysis functions can be excellent, they can also be a let-down as they don't account for statistical anomalies.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

There are a lot of free mapping apps available, and they are good for small-time personal use and professionals who need limited use. However, for anyone who needs to map items regularly, I recommend ArcGIS.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This helps us map site plans, sampling locations, geology and hydrogeology, and engineered solutions for our clients. The majority of our use is basic two-dimensional problems. The use of layers and geo-databases is extremely important. We could get more use, but without having an expert the use is somewhat limited.

  ### 37. Versatile software package

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kate S. | GIS Analyst & UAS pilot, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 03, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

I've been using ESRI software for 15 years. I like that between version to version there aren't drastic changes that cause the user to relearn where tools are.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

There are times when cloud data is down and there is no way to know when it will be restored. My normal.mxt file seems to have issues from time to time requiring several restarts.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are using ESRI products like Collector and Survey123 to more efficiently collect field data.

  ### 38. The best GIS software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 17, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

ArcGIS is best for spatial analysis and visualization

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

Expensive to purchase a licence; costly to buy each extension

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

very good

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Spatial analysis and planning. Good analysis and visualization

  ### 39. Many spatial options in one (sometimes frustrating) package

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 01, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Many easy to find options for analyzing spatial data; great table select features

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

Frequent challenging-to-solve errors; program crashes often

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

For large automated processes, consider relying more heavily on python, R, GDAL etc. . Figure out how to automate large numbers of data file downloads (DEM tiles etc.) from government websites. Spend a good quantity of time with the ArcMap before jumping into a project to understand common sources of errors etc., and keep your file storage system very trim and organized in order to reduce errors.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

(Partially) automating models, analyzing spatial hydrologic raster data

  ### 40. Esri's ArcGIS product offer expansive mapping capabilities but is far from intuitive

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Non-Profit Organization Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 14, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Endless extensions and addins you can download and use, best mapping software for technical users, good way to perform spatial analysis for a number of different types of applications and topics.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

Software can be very laggy at times, not intuitive at all for non-technical users looking to do basic mapping/analysis, expensive product with limited discount opportunities.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

If you haven't had an opportunity to take an introduction to GIS course, this product will be very confusing and difficult to use initially. Picking up a GIS Tutorial book is a great idea, to access a year long subscription and step-by-step guidance through each section.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Having ArcMap allows my organization to perform additional mapping and visualization techniques that many other organizations don't have the capacity or technical skills to do.

  ### 41. I love ArcGIS, it gives me all I need/want for my mapping needs.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Oil & Energy | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 20, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

I like the support system that it comes with. Whenever I have an issue with one of the programs, I can always contact an ESRI representative or look through geonet for help.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

I haven't quite learned to use ARCGIS Pro which was what ArcGIS is progressing towards. There are still a lot of glitches with this program.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are creating exhibits for oil and pipeline companies to show if the pipeline lies on private and public properties. The benefits to using ArcGIS is that creating exhibits can be a lot quicker on ArcGIS using data driven pages rather than AutoCAD.

  ### 42. ArcGIS Desktop - The good and bad

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Environmental Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 13, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Some of the best features of ArcGIS (32bit flavor - not ArcGIS Pro) are in the cartography and vector editing categories. ArcGIS has good tools to produce quality maps. Some tools include the use of ESRI's "data driven pages", which allow users to tile maps on small pages for large areas with high detail (large scale).

Another nice feature in ArcGIS (only available at the Standard and Advanced license level) is vector editing with topology within a Geodatabase. The topology tools work well and have good tools built into them to allow the user to find topological errors and fix them. Vector topology is an essential tool for ensuring data integrity.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

The costs of this software are enormous for the initial purchase price and the subsequent yearly fees for the product. Not having recent quotes, but in the past pricing for Standard and Advanced licensing were $7,000 and $12,000 respectively for initial purchase. Then yearly fees are incurred to get "updates" to the software and tech support. With $1500 and $3000 yearly maintenance fees respectively for Standard and Advanced, the costs per year can rapidly escalate when multiple licenses are purchased. The annual fees are practically mandatory to stay current with the community and client needs.

Proprietary data format of the Geodatabase. The ESRI geodatabase can only be created and written to by ESRI software (Standard and Advanced licenses). This design creates vendor lock-in, such that organizations need ESRI software to access and edit geodatabases. This design enforces sales of the ArcMap software, as ESRI geodatabases demand ESRI software to be fully utilized. This also creates an environment where a few special operators with special software can access the data. This discourages the accessibility and sharing of GIS data information. Being that GIS data is information, and information should be shared, the proprietary data format is an obstacle to creating easily accessible information within an organization and with other organizations.

The performance of ArcMap (32bit) is poor relative to today's computing standards. 32 bit architecture is very outdated and when performing spatial operations, the delay in processing costs users time. Since ArcMap came out and was re-written from scratch in the early 2000s, there have been continual issues with bugs and performance. Fixes to the bugs are slow to be resolved. Sometimes the application hangs up (not responding) for seemingly basic tasks.

Lack of modern algorithms. Example would be the hydrologic routing tools that are from the early 1990s and have not been updated with current modeling features such as Multi-Flow Direction (MFD) modeling of where water flows, and how much accumulation.

Tech support is a paid service along with updates to the software through yearly annual fees. The first level tech support has often left a disappointing feeling, where either the topic was being read directly from the help menu, or the technician kept trying to solve the problem with educated guesses, rather than knowing what the solution is. A substantial amount of time has been lost with tech support at the tier 1 level. The tier 2 level of support is good. The technicians know the products more specifically, and are generally more helpful to resolve the issue.

Some spatial functions are only available in the top tier product (such as identity). This aspect was really frustrating as a user and for an organization. The difference between the Standard and Advanced licensing is about $5,000 (last checked). The interesting thing is that the Basic, Standard and Advanced licenses are all the same product, just with varying levels of provided tools. One such tool is the identity function. This is a commonly overlay function in any GIS, however, ArcMap only provides this simple overlay at the advanced level.

Lack of general interoperability. Over the years, open data standards such as Web Mapping Services (WMS) and Web Feature Services (WFS) have provided open formats to work with GIS data. WFS is designed to allow editing of features over a web protocol, but in order to implement this in ArcMap, $10,000 software needs purchased (ArcGIS for Server). There is currently no way to write to an open database GIS format from ESRI software, without purchasing additional software.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

Be careful. ESRI has managed to gain major market share and monopolized the GIS software. Over the years, other open data formats have nudged ESRI to move to more supported open data formats.

Evaluate your needs. Check to see what your organization needs GIS services for. Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a great open source desktop software that meets the geospatial communities needs, with hundreds if not thousands of user contributed add-ons and tools. Some cases may require the purchase of an ESRI license. Explore other options before falling into the vendor lock-in trap. Open source software in the geospatial world, is really advanced and amazing. Consult with a user of GIS in the FOSS world, to gain information about how different products can meet the needs of an ArcMap user.

Setting up a GIS Data Library as a PostGIS/PostgreSQL server was a challenge to integrate with ESRI. The good news is that SDE is a deprecated product and the libraries are now included with ArcMap. This allows ArcMap to access Database servers and PostGIS data formats as read-only. This is ideal for setting up large, state-wide layers of GIS data, with ArcMap able to connect and clip or select features from it, and place the data in the local Geodatabase for editing.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Client needs. This ranges from permitting applications and risk assessment. Hydrologic modeling for large tracts of land are done with open source software (GRASS GIS) and then brought into ArcMap for compatibility with the organization and client needs. The benefits of ArcMap (from a consulting standpoint) is that it provides a comfort level tho those who believe that GIS is synonymous with ESRI.

  ### 43. Making maps, data collection, analysis systematic examination and evaluation of data or information.

Mapping in the field

  ### 45. Good GIS software, but requires some training

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Environmental Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 23, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

ArcGIS is really the industry standard, but to achieve anything beyond really basic functionality, you really need to get some training or teach yourself using a good reference book. Honestly to even understand the full potential of ArcGIS, you need some guidance and training.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

The software is very resource heavy - even on a very new computer with a very good processor and decent memory capacity, the software can lag a bit.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For any real mapping needs, you need ArcGIS. Visually illustrating anything geographically arranged or even higher functions of data analysis only possible when combined with other geographically projected datasets.

  ### 46. Daily power user of ArcGIS!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tommy S. | Criminal Intelligence Analyst II, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 20, 2016

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

I love everything about ArcGIS, as I use it coupled with Omega Crimeview to create weekly reports and to extract all sorts of criminal and traffic-related data.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

The product is a bit on the expensive side, but it is the best product available of its kind in my professional opinion.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

If you want a powerful mapping application with some of the best features around (which are mostly all-inclusive after you buy the product), then ArcGIS is the best there is. Our main city planning offices also use ArcGIS for their needs.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

My agency uses the software in the Crime Analysis Unit and in the Community Relations Unit to create maps, to include: crime maps, traffic incident maps, maps of popular locations, parks, and community centers, as well as route planning maps to assist presidential and other political visiting parties.

  ### 47. Awful Program, website, and customer service

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 14, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

Nothing. I have not one nice thing to say about Esri besides that Jack Dangermond needs to fire the staff or leave, himself.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

I dislike the fact that the computers in my department's GIS are always having problems due to GIS licensing. I dislike the fact that I have spent HOURS trying to download ArcGIS (I am not computer illiterate). I dislike the fact that I have spent over and hour and a half on hold with customer service. I'm actually on hold right now. I hope someone else comes along and creates a better program than Esri.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

If possible, find another program.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

None.

  ### 48. Geospatial analyst/graduate student

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Environmental Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 26, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

This program is incredibly robust and continues to improve with each update. ArcGIS allows the user to complete many analyses and other functions within the program that would have otherwise had to be completed in a separate program with less ease.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

Some processes can be less than intuitive, but after heavy use and a lot of googling (esri provides a good help forum) the user is typically able to figure it out.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mapping, geospatial analysis

  ### 49. Wonderful world of ArcGIS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 18, 2017

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

The ability to assist engineering and environmental managers with planning and providing optimum routes for pipeline analysis.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

ArcGIS is so powerful there is an enormous amount of things to learn.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

Data Management is key to good GIS.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Route analysis, Environmental Impact

  ### 50. User-friendly, effective & comprehensive GIS software.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mike H. | GIS Specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 04, 2015

**What do you like best about Esri ArcGIS?**

If you need to do something new, there's probably a tool for it. Generally tools are straightforward and the userhelp is really good, explaining all the possible choices on each tool's setting right next to the setting box.
Being able to drag and drop elements from window to window, including tools, Model builder etc is a real time saver. Inter-compatibility and conversion tools mean you can switch between CAD and other programs with ease.
The label engine is the best I have ever used, and the 'convert to annotations' feature means if you are still unhappy you can manually improve the labelling in the layout window.

**What do you dislike about Esri ArcGIS?**

Trying to find tools using terminology that is often unexpected!
Usually always get there though, internet searches really help. There is often more than one way to do something which can clutter the toolbars unnecessarily.
Occasional problems with exporting to .pdf or merging when a lot of data is being used can be frustrating.

**Recommendations to others considering Esri ArcGIS:**

Even buying the most basic version will be vast improvement over MapInfo or QGiS etc. There are lots of free add-on toolbars that can cover much of the missing tools if you do stretch to an advanced licence. It is best to bite the bullet though and get a higher-level licence as the time savings the tools will provide far outweigh the cost.

**What problems is Esri ArcGIS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use ARC for a lot of different stages of renewable energy site development; primarily for constructing environmental figure content for planning applications. Automation of tasks that have long processing times through Model Builder is one of the biggest benefits.
