I've been using the program for 5.5 years now, and there is always something that isn't working correctly. They will do a system update (sometimes poorly timed) and some problems seem to improve, and others appear. I track attendance, grades, parent and student contact, and communication with other teachers regarding shared students. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** We have a Google Classroom/Synergy integration at my school. Meaning, once I've created an assignment in google classroom, it automatically syncs into Synergy. My only dislike is that if I change a grade in synergy but not google classroom, it will switch back to the grade in google classroom once it resyncs. **What problems is Synergy Education Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** The Synergy Education Platform serves as a communication and recordkeeping tool. I am easily able to look at a student's prior grades and course lists, as well as communicate with parents, students, and faculty. ### 3. I like how different grading categories can be weighed differently. I also appreciate being able to record behavioral information in the moment that can be visible to other teachers for that day. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** I find the interface to be cumbersome in general. For example, to record an assignment by a Standard, I can't apply a score for all students with ease; I need to type in a score for each student. It's very time-consuming. You can do this (apply a score for all students) only if there is no Standard attached to it. Beyond this, my major grumble is that the IEP/504 info. cannot be easily printed for all students in a class, grade, etc. I have spent HOURS copying and pasting this info into a separate document to print out and provide (by law) for substitute teachers. Why Synergy hasn't allowed for an easy way to print this info for all to review is baffling and a disservice to students with IEP/504 plans. Lastly, Synergy is a terrible experience for students and parents and interpreting scores in a Standards-based grading. **What problems is Synergy Education Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am not really solving a problem with Synergy Education Platform. I am required to use it. If someone could resolve the issues with Synergy, I would appreciate the platform a lot more. ### 7. I often used it 1 to 1 with assignments from Google Classroom, though it does not yet have an import feature. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** It is not compatible with a lot of other school software and has downtime more often than once a week, especially at the start of the school day. Also, I have no idea why our district can't get it to communicate with Canvas for the grade book. Can't change names of assignments, can either add my own, but can't adjust easily their assignment defaults. Function I would like: "assignments "could overlap with "classwork" and both be a part of a grading group. OR I could change all "assignment" to my preferred type. It is not allowing me into ParentVue to see my child's grades. It's been OVER A WEEK and the problem has not been resolved. 2. When I tried to contact the company they SENT ME TO THE DISTRICT. Since I teach in the district, I am well aware of contact points. THAT IS NOT WORKING. Let me talk to someone who can fix the problem. 3. You need to hire parents and teachers who can work through all the glitches for you. There are a lot. 4. Simply create a "help" button for users who are having difficulty. It's not rocket science. You can't differentiate assignments for different classes. You create a new assignment for each class. I could go on. However, the Copy Assignments feature partially mitigates the inconvenience caused by this buggy, glitchy, and anti-intuitive software. A good analogy would be to say that dumpster juice is my favorite part of a dumpster fire, because it slows the spread of the fire. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** Routine tasks that I have to complete over a dozen times each require over a dozen clicks! The targets for the clicks are small and spread out across the pages, and the page requires several reloads during the process. This means that the software is difficult and stressful to use, and that simple tasks take an inordinate amount of time and energy to complete. The software allowed me to make a mistake, or rather it facilitated a mistake that I made, when I copied assignments across grade levels. What took me 15 minutes to do took me over 2 HOURS to fix, what with the several steps I had to endlessly repeat, delayed page loading, and the dozen plus website crashes I had to wait through. If I have to do something simple like delete an assignment, it should never cause the software to crash. There are drop-down menus with only 1 option. This is a professional failure. If there is only 1 option, it's not an option and shouldn't require my attention. None of the the menus, options, etc. have titles that make any sense. If I want to, say, finalize grades, there is no option that says "Finalize Grades." Rather, I must select from a dropdown menu consisting of "Report Card Preview by Standards," "Report Card Matrix," and "Students." And I have to select all 3 of these options, in sequence. And each of those clicks forces a slow reload that brings me to another page with several clicks and one or more slow reloads. This is user hostile design. If I want to input grades into assignments I have created, there is an option helpfully labelled "Assignments." I can click it, and input the grades into the assignments, no problem. However, this is apparently wrong and will cause errors later on. Instead, I have to click a button called "Measurement Topics," and under this option, I cannot enter grades into the Measurement Topics themselves, but only into the Assignments. This is not unintuitive, this is anti-intuitive; the software misleads the user seemingly deliberately. I could go on... **Recommendations to others considering Synergy Education Platform:** I believe I have made it clear in my review that you should avoid this awful software at all costs. **What problems is Synergy Education Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** The old grading software, which I also hated for similar reasons, was far better. Everything that made the old software painful to use has been amplified in Synergy. I'd like to point out here that my school district has an over $9 million dollar, 5 year contract with this company. This is an abuse of taxpayer dollars, and potentially evidence of corruption, in my opinion. I am not exaggerating. This software is that bad. But to answer the question, I use Synergy to enter grades for assignments. ### 18. The program has so many options and its easy to figure out. I love taking daily attendance through the program. When I had to add in my report card information it was so easy to do compared to other programs like Siebel. I like how easy it is to record my students grades in though I need to use electronics more than paper. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** Before I got used to it when I was taking attendance somehow Id mark all students late than just the one I was trying to make late. I think I figured it out now I dont do that anymore. When using Synergy SE, the system takes more than 3 minutes to load any pages or perform any action, as well as teachers having to have a template handy to navigate what each drop down actually means. **What problems is Synergy Education Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** Synergy gives us one place to handle day to day attendance and grades. Anything BUT this would be outstanding. Sometimes, I think just using a spreadsheet in Google Docs would be more efficient. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** Basically everything about it. It wold be okay, if it were 1995. To get from the grade book, to the parents' email address, and then back into the grade book takes a lot of steps. I dont know why relevant data cannot be located together, without having to switch pages. Schools already have slow enough internet- Synergy is almost unusable, at best. I have been using it for over 5 years now. I have offered many many suggestions for improvement, and have yet to see any of them even be acknowledged. **What problems is Synergy Education Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** Seems to be creating more problems than it solves, in my opinion- which is the opinion of someone who uses it all day, every day. ### 31. Synergy allows me to organize my grades, seating charts, and communication easily. Grades are formatted in a user friendly way. The seating chart uses the student's pictures, which is especially useful for substitutes. It is very simple to be able to communicate with all parents of over 150 students, and the students themselves. I also easily have access to student information (academic and personal). **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** I wish Synergy had an app that is just as easy to use. The app they offer is very basic and only allows attendance to be taken. I would love to be able to enter grades, see student info, etc. through the app. on my phone or Ipad. **What problems is Synergy Education Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** Synergy allows all teachers and administrators the resource to take attendance, organize grades, and communicate with all stakeholders. It is online, so it is accessible from anywhere with internet. Our previous platform needed to be downloaded, and my laptop could not download it, which meant I could not enter grades outside of my classroom. Synergy allows us to access information about students (personal and school) easily. ### 32. Being able to directly import scores from Google classroom although it is really slow and obnoxious and I use it very little as Google is terrible for language. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** Pretty much everything, seating charts are garbage. You cannot see all of the students on the chart at once. Slower than eschools which was not good either. Takes longer to enter prgress reports than filling in a scantron. Printing a simple class roster or seating chart takes at least three steps then have to wait in the que for it to even gernerate. If it is more work for me to use the technology than old school than what is the point. I have yet to see educational software where they actually consutled a working teacher in the classroom about how it should work. I want settings I can save for reports it should not take an hour to print roll sheets and seating charts for five classes and it certainly should not take an hour to up load grades. I already spend hours grading and entering them. You have to use a drop down menu for each student comment and citizenship grade at the school I could not even just type the letter in you had to use the drop down menu which of course you cannot see the whole thing without scrolling and the codes needed most are 11 and 12 so you have to scroll. When using the portal from home I could enter the letter or numbers except for 11?!!!! Why?!!!! **Recommendations to others considering Synergy Education Platform:** Don't unless the tech department wants all of the teachers to hate them as it makes our regular tasks take longer. **What problems is Synergy Education Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** Eschools seemed to be inaccurate and did not calculate grades correctly if weighted but this is the first quarter of use and I did not weight mine because in 16 years of teaching and multiple software porgrams I have found that Technology is not always progress. I am not sure on the district end as Eschools took a long time to do reports but this one is worse. As teachers we hated eschools now I appreciate what it did do and it did it faster.But nothing so far tops Easy Grade Pro they obviously consulted real teachers. ### 34. It is arranged well with tabs and icons that make sense. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** If you want a custom report you first have to learn query. It is such a big database that you can't find what you want to make queries, even with the redesign. It is not user friendly in that regard. If you can't make the query yourself, be prepared to wait at least a year for IT to not be able to figure it out and then have to contact your ESD who might make the report or crush your dreams. Edupoint customer support won't support the lowly people who actually have to use Synergy. There are reports that don't work properly that they won't fix. Be prepared to waste lots of time trying to find loopholes to get what you need and reading through manuals that don't really help. **Recommendations to others considering Synergy Education Platform:** Again, I don't know that there is much of a choice. It is what all the school use in Oregon (at least public schools). It is not the best but I'm not sure if there is anything better out there. I've had to get really good at Microsoft Access to make up for the custom report shortcomings of Synergy. Be prepared to do the same. I miss working with Access based database programs (like CampTrak) or the Mac equivalent FileMaker. Maybe other districts are using it better than us or have given there staff more training. Definitely provide training. I was left to figure things out on my own (which normally I'm pretty decent at). **What problems is Synergy Education Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is a secure database to keep student information. It helps us to better serve students when we can record and look up relevant data. ### 37. It's taken me that long to learn all the nuisances of the program, which isn't the most intuitive when you first learn the program, but now that I've learned where to find all the information I need, it's turned into a solid database for student information. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** I dislike how there are no help features for the program and how some of the features are not purely intuitive to find. Some of the student information is found in unlikely places. I like how you can upload documents to a student's file for the team to see. Grading is also user friendly, where you can add multiple assignments to the same page. I also like how our school can sync our SWIS data to synergy to be able to look up behavior incident referral data. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** I dislike the color schemes, even though you can change them. It is not visually pleasing, and teachers do have to look at it everyday. If I need to contact a parent, all phone numbers are found within the app. If I choose to call from the app, it automatically adds *67 to block my caller ID. Little things like that are what make the program so useful. The incident reporting feature is also very handy. If I have an issue with a student, it asks thorough questions about what happened, where it happened, which students were involved (pulled from SIS$, and which rules were broken. All of the information is loaded in the system which makes this a breeze. It’s sent to the principal and recorded automatically. **What do you dislike about Synergy Education Platform?** I wish the App allowed for inputting grades into my grade book. **Recommendations to others considering Synergy Education Platform:** Allow for grade input on the iPhone app. **What problems is Synergy Education Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** This program allows me to contact parents conveniently. I no longer have to sift through registration forms to find a contact. It also helps me keep up with attendance issue.
