The firmware usually adds a ton of features. Statistics are a great feature which allows you to track network activity. It is pretty easy to figure out who's connecting, when and how much data was pulled. I like the fact that it adds features often aren't available in out-of-box solution like guest network, multi-WAN, VPN, multi-SSID setup.
