Datafold Overview

What is Datafold?

Datafold is a data observability platform that helps companies prevent data catastrophes. It has a unique ability to identify, prioritize and investigate data quality issues proactively before they affect production. Datafold’s proactive approach to data quality helps data teams gain visibility and confidence in the quality of their analytical data through data profiling, column-level lineage and intelligent anomaly detection. Datafold also helps automate regression testing of ETL code with its Data Diff feature that instantly shows how a change in ETL or BI code affects the produced data, both on a statistical level and down to individual rows and values. Datafold integrates with all major data warehouses as well as frameworks such as Airflow & dbt and seamlessly plugs into CI workflows.

Product Description

Datafold is a proactive data observability platform that prevents data outages by proactively stopping data quality issues before they get into production. The platform comes with four unique features that reduce the number of data quality incidents that make it into production by 10x. - Data Diff: 1-click regression testing for ETL that saves you hours of manual testing. Know the impact of each code change with automatic regression testing across billions of rows. - Column-level lineage: using SQL files and metadata from the data warehouse, Datafold constructs a global dependency graph for all your data, from events to BI reports that help you reduce incident response time, prevent breaking changes, and optimize your infrastructure. - Data Catalog: Datafold saves hours spent on trying to understand data. Find relevant datasets, fields, and explore distributions easily with an intuitive UI. Get interactive full-text search, data profiling, and consolidations of metadata in one place. - Alerting: Be the first one to know with Datafold's automated anomaly detection. Datafold’s easily adjustable ML model adapts to seasonality and trend patterns in your data to construct dynamic thresholds.

What do you like best about Datafold?

The Data Diff feature enables data teams to push new code with confidence. Combined with the Column Lineage feature, bugs and regressions are greatly reduced. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Datafold?

Data catalog discovery needs more attention Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Datafold solving and how is that benefiting you?

Code quality at the review stage had been a big problem. A change early on in the stack had downstream regressions which were not caught by engineers. Data Fold's integration with GitHub brings any issues with a change directly into the code review. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Datafold?

I like how I can easily see the output differences of two queries, how many duplicates, and how many nulls there are. It makes it easier to drill down to the source of discrepancy. The lineage tool is also beneficial to see dependencies. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Datafold?

Not a dislike, but just a suggestion if we can also go down to the per-field view of the lineage tool so we know which tables our metrics are coming from. This is particularly useful for tables with aggregated data and metrices from multiple tables. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Datafold solving and how is that benefiting you?

I use Datafold when updating queries when we change data sources or make improvements/additions. It's easier to see affected fields because we can see the columns of two queries next to each other. I used to run and download sections of the query and randomly compare columns for that, and re-run queries on the console to check for different filters. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Datafold?

Datafold has a simple UI and navigation with powerful features underneath. The lineage product allows users to deeply explore how tables and data assets relate to each other, and easily see the dependency graph for a given table or column. This makes understanding the impact of data issues or outages very straightforward. Their datadiff product has been critical for data migrations that require careful orientation to detail. Their cataloging product is in its early stages, but is already helping us search and document the data assets we have, which makes onboarding new data scientists or data-saavy teammembers easier. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Datafold?

There's ripe opportunity for datafold to continue to increase the integrations that they support. I'd love to see both Mode and Tableau integrations added as downstream asset integrations. Search on the catalogue is sometimes slow and clunky. The alerts functionality is pretty basic today and could use with more granular controls anda nd desintations. They're still early on in product development so I expect all of these things to improve over the next year! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Datafold solving and how is that benefiting you?

We're using Datafold to address data quality, visibility, and cataloging. It is also helpful to us in data incident management, in that it allows us to understand the impact of data quality issues. We are already realizing benefits by leveraging Datafold in our data onboarding process for new employees -- it's much easier to have them explore Datafold than SELECT * LIMIT 100 from all the relevant database tables they're trying to learn about. What do you like best about Datafold?

Datafold makes it easy to see how the changes you make impact your data through easy-to-understand visualizations and tooling. Their integration with DBT helps make this incredible easily. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Datafold?

Datafold does an excellent job for its intended purpose. Obviously, when you are deliberately making changes to your data, you need to be thoughtful about if the changes you are seeing are what you intended. It can require a bit of work to do this, but that is unavoidable. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Datafold solving and how is that benefiting you?

There have been a few larger code refactoring projects that Datafold has been an enormous help with. Since the project's goal is to have the output be the same, Datafold makes understanding if you achieved this incredibly straightforward. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Datafold?

Datafold has a broad set of features, and the support team has been very responsive. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Datafold?

Setup is not as easy as it was billed to be. We've also encountered a fair number of bugs, and UI performance is slow at times. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Datafold:

The product is still a bit immature, but the combination of features is unique and powerful. I think, in particular, data diff is a standout. As they work out the kinks and we get it fully integrated into our workflows, I expect it will be very impactful for us. Having a widely accessible place for our organization to understand our data fully will reduce friction and free up resources for higher-value work. I expect as they get more traction in the market the tool will get even better and hopefully easier to setup. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Datafold solving and how is that benefiting you?

We wanted an easy way to understand our data flows and view data diff as a great tool to understand how code changes translate into data changes. We have yet to enable data diff, but lineage has already proved helpful as we refactor some of our pipelines. Being able to pull descriptions in yamls into a more widely accessible location helps improve understanding of our data in our organization. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Datafold?

1) UI is very intuitive; it took me a few hours to figure out how to use the tool

2) The option to input queries creates a lot of flexibility for data quality monitoring, which is an unsolved problem by other tools

3) Alerting available through anomaly detection & setting bounds, which allows for domain knowledge & automated detection

4) Support team is very responsive to feedback Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Datafold?

No integration with Datadog / Pagerduty yet (alerting only available through email) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Datafold solving and how is that benefiting you?

Data quality monitoring without hard failures -- most other tools are too inflexible & force hard failures on pipelines. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
