With each update, Brightspace is enhancing the LMS through customer feedback and PIE ideas in the Brightspace community. There is not much that I dislike with Brightspace. As with anything, there are always some things that I wish were better. Major project updates sometimes get pushed back to allow for improvements to development but delay initiatives that our college is working on and can be frustrating. Overall, I appreciate D2L's offering of the PIE area of the community and have seen many customer suggested improvement items being completed faster in the past two years. I love the collaboration they've built in as a company supporting teaching & learning for all users, from tools created to the training and professional development. Their support systems run from personalized communities and affinity groups, blogs and webinars, to larger regional and international conferences. Those experiences have helped me learn and grow as an instructor. Although I've been teaching online for 15 plus years, I always learn something new from attending their annual "Fusion" conference.

I also appreciate the fact that inclusion and accessibility are values in mission and practice. I know they've won awards for the accessibility features. I look forward to seeing how this is integrated even more in the future.

I know they are working on some "consistency" elements across the various BrightSpace tools, which I believe will strengthen the user experience for instructors and students. They have worked on renaming functions so that different tools would have common names throughout the LMS. However, I would also like to see some of the sub-functions be used more consistently (end due dates for discussion boards and surveys) as well as their location on the different tool pages to reduce scrolling and promote ease. After my initial positive impressions with the courses and content, I found that other aspects of the platform are less refined. The forums, for example, are difficult to navigate and feel outdated compared to standard forums, making it even harder for users to participate and engage. Additionally, there are limited options for collaborative activities such as wikis, peer reviews, or projects, which are available on other platforms. As a result, learning here is mostly passive, focused on consuming content and submitting assignments. The platform also tends to be somewhat slow when creating or browsing content. Another significant issue is that pricing is set in dollars, which makes it challenging for people in Latin American economies to access the full range of services—perhaps only public institutions can afford it.
