**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dhruvil S. | Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 08, 2024

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

Couchbase is a NoSQL database that stands out for several reasons, but what I like best is its hybrid architecture, which combines the best aspects of both relational and NoSQL databases.

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

Couchbase's powerful features, such as Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) and Cross-Datacenter Replication (XDCR), can make the initial setup and ongoing management complex. For organizations without dedicated database administrators or significant expertise in Couchbase, this complexity can lead to steep learning curves and potential misconfigurations.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Traditional relational databases often struggle with scaling horizontally, particularly as data volumes and user traffic increase.Couchbase is built to scale horizontally by adding more nodes to a cluster. It handles large amounts of data and high-traffic loads efficiently by distributing data across multiple nodes.
This makes it easier to support growing applications without significant re-architecting or performance degradation. If you're working on applications that need to handle millions of users or petabytes of data, Couchbase can scale to meet those demands.

  ### 6. Ease to use

While couchbase offer various features, but its intial setup and configuration can be challenging for a new user. Additionally, while the document is very well documented however lacks clarity in certain areas and making troubleshooting.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Couchbase addresses several key issues related to data management and application performance. Primarily, it solves the challenge of handling high-speed transactions and large-scale data processing. By using Couchbase, I benefit from its high availability and low latency, which are crucial for real-time applications. The platform’s ability to efficiently manage large volumes of data and provide quick access through its key-value store improves the overall responsiveness and reliability of applications. Furthermore, the ease of scaling Couchbase horizontally means that as data grows, performance remains consistent, ensuring a smooth user experience. This scalability and efficiency ultimately lead to better resource utilization and reduced operational costs.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use couchbase for working with documents and managing them to get optimal work. While doing so, couchbase is very useful at working with the documents and also with the querying.

  ### 39. Couchbase Documental Database

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Davide R. | Head of Android Development, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 26, 2023

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

It's a good alternative to Mongo Db; it has synchronization and replica logic. it's easy to interface implement and use into your software.

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

It has a good documentation but not great. Support it sometimes slowly.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

it's good if you have many client to one server architectures and each client must receive information to the other clients.

  ### 40. Dynam data storage with flexibility

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 10, 2023

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

Its local useability for development and similar integration on deployment

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

For earlier users of database they find it hard to search the data and understand the new concept.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have real time data handling with flexibility of requests and responses. A normal database won't help us in that and won't provide an easy ui.. There couchbase covers both the aspects

  ### 41. Still short of things which should ideally be part of such a product.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Harsimran S. | Design, Implementations and Deployments, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 20, 2022

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

Their trial version is quite elaborate
fairly dev friendly
it has lite DB in it -- with no sql
Cloud native
fast and responsive syncing of data
usage of different channels of data
security roles

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

Dashboard improvements are a must IMO
query building takes time to get used to
UI is pretty basic
Data loading should be faster
lesser inituitveness in terms of end to end view of how end user experience from sample apps
CDN integration
Full fledged analytics can't really be run.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Channels public & private
pretty fast in assigning roles and access to users
Having right information visible to right end users is very fast as compared to any rdbms based backed.
Can use any kind of data and pass it onto backend
Our end customers trust the security from couchbase

  ### 42. VPC Peering offered by Couchbase Capella improves security & latency of our customer applications

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Varshini S. | Database Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 24, 2022

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

Whenever we carry deployments using Couchbase Capella into our cloud platform over our organization's network, we are able to obtain substantial control through its Data Plane. The Data Plane also accepts all the control plane IP addresses which we define for maintaining and monitoring our instances. We can configure all allowed IP addresses either as a single address or as a CIDR block as per our cluster requirements. Also, its infrastructure is enforced further using RBAC implementation which is convenient to safeguard our database systems.

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

The learning curve is a little steep while working with its advanced query tuning features. Cost expenditures could be high if we don't utilize its resources properly. We define TTL parameters carefully in order to save cost & resource optimization. Apart from these, Couchbase Capella is suitable to manage our database applications for our customers.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Couchbase Capella ensures high data availability for our customer applications which are deployed in different geographic regions. It provides plenty of features for major requirements for hosting, database management, storage provisions and email handling. It follows a centralized log management system for handling our RCA and troubleshooting protocols. Since we enable VPC peering, we needn't require any outbound network access for accessing our VPC applications. We can establish cluster isolation, and define our alert rules & metrics for every individual project that we work on with ease.

  ### 43. Couchbase with Spring boot

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Amit P. | Senior Software Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 18, 2022

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

Easy to get started. We can query over the DB using N1QL that is very similar to SQL so doesn't need extra knowledge to get started. UI is very clear and easy to understand. Indexing is easy to implement and see all the available indices and while running the queries also we can see which index got picked up. Loved this option.

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

I was using it with Spring Webflux that is reactive, so while processing data parallely the load on couchbase goes very high and operations start failing. Would love to see some inbuilt support on this to handle traffic properly.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is a NoSql DB and provides good option to get started with NoSql without need of any extensive training for the developers. It helped me build an application that deals with millions of documents and with proper indexing it performs well.

  ### 44. Easy To Use Open-Source Software

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nico P. | Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 09, 2023

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

I liked the ease of use alot, the NoSQL setup was done very well.

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

Adding authorized users was a bit of a challenge however my team figured it out after some poking around.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

My business was in need of a solid database solution that could be managed with ease. After trying tons of other software solutions, Couchbase Server worked best for us.

  ### 45. Easy to use and well documented, issues when dealing with larger data

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** AMIT P. | Software Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 07, 2021

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

It's pretty fast, indexing and all can be done with just one line and it makes the queries execute 100 times faster. And the best thing I find is the documentation, many times I come across a new usecase and am unable to implement then I look for that in the documentation and find all the answers to all the usecase I had.

Doesn't perform well when data increases, lot of times I get ambiguous timeout exceptions.

Couchbase UI is also very easy to use.

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

Please make it efficient when dealing with large data. By large I mean at least with 50k records it should perform well.

Not dislike but one improvement I would suggest is -
Give a builtin mechanism to handle concurrent updates to a document in db.

**Recommendations to others considering Couchbase:**

Use it only if you have write - write requirements. Otherwise for fetching data at scale its not that efficient.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am working on a usecase where millions of records will be saved in db and they need to be fetched many times and filter them based on some inner field or a value inside an array. Couchbase gives solution to this in the form of "unnest".
And with proper indexing queries works pretty fast too.

  ### 46. Excellent

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kranthi K. | Sr. Java Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 03, 2023

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

JSON format is the one I like the most while using

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

UI is somewhat nor comfortable to use for me

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Storing Documents

  ### 47. Blasing fast performance but difficult to operate at scale

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Pierre R. | Senior Engineering Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 14, 2022

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

- KV Lookups Performance
- Support for nested document JSON operations
- Comprehensive Web console with useful metrics

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

- Frequent breaking changes on the SDK
- Server upgrades often lead to downtime as the client needs to reconnect
- .NET is poorly served in general, the documentation should be improved

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- Fast lookups for risk rules to be evaluated as part of a payment processing workflow
- Indexing of risk rules
- Velocity computation for risk features

  ### 48. Decent Database for JSON data

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ashish M. | Senior Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 11, 2022

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

It is very simple and has no complex configuration. It stores data in different buckets, similar to tables in RDBMS. It provides bucket to bucket sync or cluster level to diff cluster level sync using XDCR, which helps in syncing or moving data. As it saves data in JSON format, it's really easy to structure data in couchbase. It works on the N1ql query and provides suggestions for index too.

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

I dislike, its response time, we faced lots of issues in reducing the query time, even though we have created all the necessary indexes, still, the response time was high. Another thing where we faced an issue was in eventing functionality, as the proper log is not displayed on UI, it's difficult to understand for which document the eventing worked or not.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have built a consumer app, where users create documents, which we save in couchbase DB, and further, read it back when requires. It helped us in creating the app quickly, as it is very easy to start working on couchbase. They also provide a cloud version of couchbase, which is easy to configure.

  ### 49. Pretty stable with a nice WUI

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 24, 2022

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

Horizontal scalability. Good support. N1QL.

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

Subscription Cost. Lack of guarantee of backward compatibility. Lack of enough documentation to troubleshoot, especially reading logs.

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Online upgrade of the database.
Horizontal scalability.

  ### 50. High performance, high reliability

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 22, 2022

**What do you like best about Couchbase?**

It's super performant and very reliable. There is a DCP (database change protocol) which can be used to react to mutations. This is very useful for any streaming use cases including integrations

**What do you dislike about Couchbase?**

No materialised views. No out of the box odbc or jdbc connectors. You have to buy these from 3rd party vendors at high prices.

**Recommendations to others considering Couchbase:**

Look at the analytics and eventing modules. They are very powerful

**What problems is Couchbase solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use it for a wide range of operational systems which serve front end and back end applications. There is no tolerance for lost data and we read and write at massive scale. We persist everything to disk and maintain around 90% of keys in memory for fast access.
