Cisco IronPort email security technologies provide industry-leading inbound email security and outbound email control. **What do you like best about Cisco IronPort?** Since implementing Cisco Email Security, we have had a drastic increase in phishing and malicious emails getting through. It is like going from the three stooges guarding the gate to the Avengers taking the helm. The companies using Cisco Ironport are most often found in United States and in the Computer Software industry. Cisco Ironport is most often used by companies with 1000-5000 employees and >1000M dollars in revenue. Our data for Cisco Ironport usage goes back as far as 4 years and 10 months. There were detailed logs available. That was a seriously good feature... It turns out these were actually spoof emails that came into our environment. I got to know about them from the log system. Primary requirement was to get rid of the open source Squid Proxies to get a better application visibility, technical support and ease manageability. Placement - 1. Before the perimeter firewall, load balancing done via BIG-IP F5 appliances. 2. Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure **What do you like best about Cisco IronPort?** As compared to Squid, ease of administration, Cisco's excellent support, device stability, ease of carrying out maintenance (upgrades / downgrades / replacement etc.). It integrates with other devices for providing malware protection, application visibility. Cisco Talo's IP and domain reputation is quite intensive, thereby less false positives. The turnaround time by Cisco to address domain mis-classification is low, thereby efficient. Excellent reporting **What do you dislike about Cisco IronPort?** Cannot compete with the likes of Zscaler Internet Access, DLP is fairly basic, lack of posture assessment etc. To summarize, it is not suited / geared towards the new security paradigms like ZTNA and SASE, which other players like Zscaler, Palo Alto and Broadcom (Symantec). The VM series devices can be spun in public clouds but it still doesn't translate to what the competitors have to offer. **Recommendations to others considering Cisco IronPort:** Consider this product if you are still using an on-premises environment.. If the move is towards ZTNA and / or SASE, go for some other paradigm as it is not geared towards that. In its own class of products, it ranks high (may be below Symantec's Bluecoat proxy) **What problems is Cisco IronPort solving and how is that benefiting you?** Cisco Ironport works the way it promises to work.. The best part about having the product is the device stability, ease of doing upgrades which I found was not a good idea in case of Squid proxies (as the underlying OS needs to be upgraded, patched etc. to address the new vulnerabilities). A hardened OS like AsyncOS removes any vulnerabilities that the traditional NIX operating systems are rife with. Best part about this is to have insights about the threats that even legitimate websites sometimes inadvertently pose. ### 6. Cisco IronPort was used as a virtual appliance in cluster for high availability. Message analysis is very simple in IronPort the message tracking feature is quite easy and helps in a faster analysis of mails. **What do you like best about Cisco IronPort?** The message tracking feature and the simple inbound and outbound mail rules are the most easiest to use. The built in AV support is one of the best from a 3rd party for additional analysis. **What do you dislike about Cisco IronPort?** Few locations we had hardware based IronPort appliances. the new software releases need a higher or more resources to run, scalability to existing devices were not supported, due to which some of the features could not be incorporated. Expect more scalability and NexGen features that are available on the O365 i.e. Advanced threat protection. **Recommendations to others considering Cisco IronPort:** Would consider looking at O365 with ATP has more flexibility but still if an on-premise solution is needed then can always consider IronPort. **What problems is Cisco IronPort solving and how is that benefiting you?** Emails analysis, looking for Spams, grayware and malware from emails is one of the major activities that is been done with Cisco ironPort. The major benefits are the Gui based appliance of Cisco is very easy to access and very simple too. Maintenance and administration is very easy. The options and locations are pretty straight forward and people with less knowledge can also understand the features and options available on it .The support team also is very responsive and are helpful if we are facing any issues. The office 365 automatic URL / IP address updates is a nice touch. The URL categories are fairly accurate and we have not run into many issues where they blocked legitimate traffic. **What do you dislike about Cisco IronPort?** Creating certificates to play "man-in-the-middle" to intercept the web traffic for SSL decryption. The appliance does not support automated configuration backups. Backups must use some form of BASH script. **Recommendations to others considering Cisco IronPort:** I believe the product is outdated and not inline with other industry partners.
