There are very few downsides to Canvas, however as an admin there are definitely some odd things like my inability to remove navigation links by term. When there is SO MANY Canvas hacks, and when there’s changes, I have problems that I have to try to work out with students. And, frankly, I’m using Canvas — and have for over 10 years — but when Canvas fails, I look ineffective to my students. Its ability to support instructors seems to not even be a focus at Instructure. This is an extremely easy platform for onboarding new users. As an instructional technologist, I particularly appreciated this during the Covid pandemic when we brought literally hundreds of courses online in a two week period. Customer service is incredibly difficult to utilize and once you have an instance, it often feels like you're on your own unless you decide to come to InstCon. The commodification of every new tool is also exhausting, badgr going away and insights being it's own thing and catalog being separate often makes these tools extremely expensive and out of reach for smaller orgs. There are a lot of features that feel like they should be included in the base price, but would require paid customization or pricey add-ons. Two that come to mind are the Analytics Insights and a tool that would perform auto-messaging based on student activity (ex. score below a 70% and you get an auto-email encouraging you to try again.)
