Other JDKs had Rosetta overhead. Later, when I joined Miro, I was the first backend engineer with non-Intel chip. So my onboarding was a bit unusual, the M1 just was not supported in project setup at the moment 😀. So my first task was to make compatible dev environment. The Azul JDK was my choice for sure, it gave a significant boost to the build/import/run of my Java applications. It provided the easiest migration alternative that accommodated most of my companies existing use-cases and needs. Now, however, I added a JavaFX Application class to an existing Java app, and I was struggling to get IntelliJ IDEA to run it without setting up external libraries. My workaround was to use Gradle instead, and that helped compile and test, but I wanted to run the app from inside the IDE. All I had to do was switch my JDK to zulu-21.fx (from SDKman), and everything worked immediately. That made my day. :) **What do you dislike about Azul Platform Core (Zulu)?** Nothing. It's also nice that Zulu provides a distribution with JavaFx. Although I don't need it, if I wanted to work with JavaFx, I know I'm covered Zulu even provides a distribution with CRaC support, which isn't yet in main OpenJDK builds. No other Java distribution provides it out of the box besides the builds by the OpenJDK CRaC project, AFAIK. **What do you dislike about Azul Platform Core (Zulu)?** The naming is a bit confusing (is it now Zulu JDK or Azul JDK?). It's great for us that the installer is distributed very lightweight and makes upgrading easy and more frequent for us now. I like how seriously Azul takes security and their enterprise features enable Administrators like my self to get ease of use when managing an estate. **What do you dislike about Azul Platform Core (Zulu)?** When migrating from another vendor we had to do an extra reboot that triggered Windows Updates sometimes. Azul Zulu builds of OpenJDK make this easy with builds that include JavaFX modules. This saves fussing around with downloading OpenJFX modules and configuring the module path. **What do you dislike about Azul Platform Core (Zulu)?** There are no downsides. Zulu is as solid a build of OpenJDK as you can get. When we first dropped in the Zulu build of OpenJDK with JavaFX to replace Oracle JDK 8, everything "just worked." **What problems is Azul Platform Core (Zulu) solving and how is that benefiting you?** Building JavaFX applications is much easier when you have a build of the JDK that includes the JavaFX modules. There is no need to mess around with a module path. The tools like jimage and jpackage work to make JRE images with the JavaFX libraries without the need to download and configure a separate SDK for JavaFX. This works better than relying on Maven artifacts that have native libraries embedded in .jar files that must be extracted at runtime. Zulu builds of Open JDK are up-to-date with the latest fixes and features of both OpenJDK and OpenJFX. It's an easy choice. ### 11. I find it also integrates very well into all different "set your JDK" helpers/plugins and environments, and it's my toolchain JDK platform of choice when I am working on Gradle projects. **What do you dislike about Azul Platform Core (Zulu)?** There is not a lot to dislike. I mean, I don't use it for any advanced purposes, and it does exactly what I need it to do. **What problems is Azul Platform Core (Zulu) solving and how is that benefiting you?** Zulu has a wide range of support for different JDK versions and libraries that have changed throughout the years. Being able to just out of the box put Zulu in my Gradle toolchain saves me large amounts of workaround and configuration hacks for modernizing Java projects. I have done two technical uplifts from Java 8, and had maintenance responsibility for another Java 8 application that was set to be end of lifed. Working with that turned out to be seamless with Zulu as provider, for example, Java FX for Mac OS X on aarch64, is just there, and still works. Thus, I don't have to go through any breaking states when I'm upgrading an application with Zulu. The support / platform availibility matrix for Zulu is huge, and this is exactly what I need for projects like this. ### 12. We have not encountered any problems using the Zulu jdk. In the past in Codename One we had an issue with the Oracle removal of JavaFX yet Azul created a version that bundled FX within. We since removed the FX requirement but stayed with Azul as it still has wide support for pretty much every OS and CPU we need and good support for older versions. **What do you dislike about Azul Platform Core (Zulu)?** I don't have any specific problem with Azul. All of the issues I would have had exist in OpenJDK and Oracle JVM too. Azul addresses my needs perfectly in that regard. **What problems is Azul Platform Core (Zulu) solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use it as my implementation of Open JDK. I use it both during development and in production instead of the Oracle JDK and the standard OpenJDK binaries. Since there is a wide selection of binaries I find it easy to recommend Azul to my customers as their platform/need will be supported. ### 14. Also, you can download any build with or without JavaFX starting from Java 8. This is just fantastic! Also, Azul is one of the few vendors that even fixes critical security holes in older JSR specifications and their OpenJDK JDK and JRE builds are all TCK tested - that's a big step forward in my opinion. **What do you dislike about Azul Platform Core (Zulu)?** I haven't found any performance limitations or problems yet, neither in packaging the Java runtime environment nor in running autumo products on it. Yes, that is the case with my company! We've been migrating and testing OpenJDKs so customers aren't locked into certain long-term and expensive contracts, and the Azul platform is our first choice. Now all of autumo's enterprise products run on Azul Zulu builds of OpenJDK, and the GUIs even ship with their OpenJDK implementation. If you need to decide on a JRE/JDK, we recommend you take a look at the Zulu community. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to improve the performance of your environment, Azul offers builds with support and even high performance builds. Our customers can use OpenJDK builds for free, and if their operating environment requires higher performance, they can find reasonable and flexible pricing options that meet performance, security, and value requirements. But Java itself, and the JDK, have in fact remained as "free software" (open source/GPL) ever since it was first released as such in 2006/2007. The key to getting the "safe", free/open source licensed version of Java is to use a distribution that is compiled and released by a someone other than Oracle, who are working from the vanilla GPL-licensed OpenJDK source code, without Oracle's proprietary components. Zulu is one such distribution. My company has used Zulu as our go-to JDK distribution for the past 6 years. As far as we are concerned, it is identical in functionality to the Oracle distribution (minus Oracle's proprietary features, which we never used). Our product is a piece of Java-based desktop software (Ultorg, a user interface for relational databases), which bundles the Zulu JDK binaries with the downloadable application so that users do not have to install, or be aware of, Java. Such bundling would not have been possible with the Oracle-licensed versions of Java. I would not recommend trying to build JDK from source code; it's a very big piece of software, with a lot of components needed to build it on Windows and MacOS, including code signing and so on. (I know that JetBrains builds their own JDK for JetBrains, but they have more resources than most of us...) Just use the ready-made Zulu binaries. **What do you dislike about Azul Platform Core (Zulu)?** The main challenge for Azul is probably the lack of brand recognition, since Oracle was for a long time regarded as "the" official Java distribution. **What problems is Azul Platform Core (Zulu) solving and how is that benefiting you?** We needed to bundle JDK with our desktop Java application, and could not use the Oracle distribution due to its licensing terms. Zulu worked great, however. Having decided to bundle Zulu JDK with our product, we have also switched to using Zulu on all our development machines. We have also started implementing a Java/J2EE-based server product, and may end up using Zulu for this as well. ### 16. It is fully compatible with the latest Java SE specifications and has been thoroughly tested for compatibility with various Java applications and libraries. Talking about stability, long-term support and bug fixes for its OpenJDK versions, which ensures stability and reliability for applications, are part of the package. I especially like ready-to-deploy packages like RPM, MSI, and DMG for my common platforms. I knew about the Arm distributions though was pleased to find Apple M1 support for my new laptop. I know its hard to maintain breadth of platform coverage, depth of version support, and keeping timely with the binaires covering new versions on an endless treadmill. Well done keeping abreast of all those variables. **What do you dislike about Azul Platform Core (Zulu)?** I find the marketing of "Core Platform" a bit awkward. I understand the desire to improve branding and differentiation; I'm not sure the chosen new naming helps clarify things for longstanding users nor to attract new ones, especially when the original product names are carried along.
