  ### 1. A solid choice, but not cheap

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

The tax engine works well and returns fast, consistent results. There are many plugin integrations already prebuilt for most ERP systems.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

The product is mostly solid, except for tax in Alabama, which is odd. Their reluctance to give you "Tax Advice" can sometimes be a little frusturating. The staff and support are good, and they will ususally respond quickly if you call them, but can be slow to respond to tickets created by email. The only real problem is thier total refusal to assist with even the most basic of changes to the OOB configuration for Salesforce integrations.  I get that they could not do extensive chenges, but a catalog of simple mapping changes for very common scenarios would seem reasonable... I doubt its rare for a company to want tax to be calcualted based upon the Opportunity shipping address instead of the address on the account, for example, so why not help with that?

Tax collection for online sales. Integration with our ERP and CRM systems.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

Reliability. I feel confident that we are collecting and reporting the correct amount of sales & use taxes on every invoice. I also really love working with Managed Services and using ECM to keep our exemption certificates up to date. We are much more confident with our tax compliance since using Avalara.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

The website crashes frequently. There are good days and there are bad days. When it's a bad day, the site crashes multiple times. Also, when we first started setting up our returns (in 40+ states) I had very little guidance and when a form mis-match issue occurred on a handful of states, I did not appreciate the EXTREMELY high fees for canceling the return for that month until we could get it corrected. It was very frustrating to have to tell my boss we were billed $600 x 5 because I made a mistake when setting up a few of the returns.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used to have tax rate issues in which we'd have to stop billing, and then have to go back and credit/rebill invoices that were taxed incorrectly. We are much more confident now that Avalara and their accuracy with tax rates have taken over. I also love all the reporting functions. There are a million different ways to run reports on all our sales data. Brilliant!

As a CFO of my company, I use avalara for sales tax. 
The implementation is very painful, many people, and they ask you to repeat the same thing over and over.
The support team is slow
The account rep ignores my emails
They renew the contract without any notice and lock in price increases and remove all the discounts before previous years and it's litterally impossible to contact anybody.

I wish they had a way to apply for the various states for you.
it is very difficult to get support about billing questions.
Pricing is not transparent and unexpected charges are not infrequent.

Filing sales tax in multiple jurisdictions can be time consuming and confusing. Avalara streamlined the process taking sales tax from several hours a month to just a few minutes.

Some trouble recognizing tax exempt customers, but we just signed up for the certificate management service that will hopefully solve the issue.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

Nothing about it. Not upto the expectations   Everyone is trying to get something out of us. No transparency in pricing and no follow up. Training is worst. Never get back to us when asked about something but gets reply right away when there will be a charge for fix something for back taxes.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Everything that they offer as nothing match to the expectations. Competitors are offering more then them. Pricing is not at all competitive and have to do most of the part of taxation. What's the use when have to do maximum with paid service providers.

Nothing is to be done with the problem that we were facing. Any given time, not getting consistent feedback and everything is our problem and fault.

The customer support is very helpful as is the chatbot when trying to find information. The application is easy to integrate to our ERP and transfer data. It's easy to use and review transactions that are synced over.

Avalara has taken the guess work out of sales tax for our company. Not only does it help keep us in compliance with state governments but it also streamlines our tax reporting.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

The application is a little confusing to navigate at first. It took us a while to figure out where to get information from as we felt it wasn't the most inuitive but once we learned it is now easy for us.

It is solving the monitoring of establishing nexus and reporting sales tax to the respective jurisdictions.

Nothing we have liked - we don't know why our ex-accountant used it to start with.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

We have been using Avalara for 4 years having nothing but bad to say. They changed 4 representatives of us. Extremely irresponsive. They messed up our sales tax collection a big time and refused to take any responsibility. The software is designed to do nothing. The tax holding and payment are all wrong. Their rep made lots of mistakes on our tax study and when our accountants point them out, they have an extremely bad attitudes and it is consistent across their entire team. We have not paid much attention to sales tax until we realized their software is not functioning at all.

Taking the guess work out of jurisdiction taxing.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Right now my biggest complaint is NOT getting my credit card to run.  They have run it twice to pay a very large invoice, but then three days later it reverses. 

Not updating jurisdictions soon enough.  

Lastly, your ticketing system! Half the time I get questions back with items in the ticket! Read the whole ticket! And then you close them before the issue is resolved! My guess is your techs are rewarded for closing tickets??!!

Our yard level staff don't need to know taxing jurisdictions.

It's not a dislike, it's more of a suggestion for the heat map within AvaTax. If there could be the capability to turn states off/on would be helpful.

We had difficulty with the speed of our  Quickbooks/AvaTax integration. It resulted in us having to disconnect QB and do a download of transactions at the end of the month.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

Their sales tax product works and saves us time.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Let me first start by saying I used to be a huge advocate for Avalara. They simplified sales tax collection and filing and there was value for what we were paying for. At my current company, we signed up for the tier of 1K transaction as we have a small US operation (less than 200 customers) that are getting billed mostly annual. There was no reason to believe we would need more than 1K transactions and they agreed. Throughout our term, Avalara's standard NetSuite connector was picking up erroneous API calls that pushed us into the 50K transaction tier and AUTOMATICALLY WITHDREW >$45K FROM OUR BANK ACCOUNT without our consent in overages for the erroneous usage. Their support team couldn't figure out why, even after numerous calls with different support team members and an escalation to Tier 2. In fact, only the first support person actually tried to understand what was causing it (who then left the company), the other support teammembers just wanted to essentially blame us for how we were using NetSuite. Their response was that it was our fault in how we set up the NetSuite / Avalara connector (which I knew wasn't correct). I fought with them for over 6 months trying to get an answer on what was causing these API calls... I finally hired external consultants who took a look and said the standard (out of the box) Avalara script in NetSuite was picking up unnecessary SOAP web service messages that had nothing to do with sales tax or addresses which were driving the API calls through the roof. I originally assumed positive intent but the way the company treated us it truly felt like robbery. Once I brought this to their leadership team (responsiveness was VERY spotty), they agreed to a refund but only of $30K. Its been months since we agreed on that refund, and we still haven't received $10K of that $30K and no one can provide an update on it. I'm exhausted working with them and I would not recommend using Avalara unless you're ok throwing money away. The product works, but the service and schemes they play are not worth it.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

The simplicity in filing is what I like most about Avalara.  You set up your customers and states and  it will automatically  prepare monthly or quarterly documents.  International usage is also incredibly easy.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

The support ticket system has taken a long time to get a response.  Once I waited 6 weeks, even though that was the promised turnaround time.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The use of Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) has been a major time-saver for me.  It's so easy to make a few clicks and all taxes are submitted and paid automatically.

We love th ECM system. It really helps us keep up and manage all of our customer tax exemption certificates. It allows us to stay on top of expirations and validations. We love it!

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Duplicates was an issue for us, I wish it would warn us before uploading them.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We learned that we weren't using it to the best of our abilities, so after the conference we now realize it will help us with the issues we have of keeping up with expired certificates via their campaign solutions.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

As a NetSuite specialist, I find it easy to explain the central use case for having Avalara's Avatax connected with NetSuite.  Its critical to have an always on, instantaneous tax caluclation that can pull togehter a complete fact set- Where does mycompany have nexus?  Is the ship to address for the customer in a place where I have nexus? Is my item for sale taxable?  Is my customer taxable?
With over 13,000 unique taxing jurisdictions in the USA, the ever changing tax policies at the state level, city and local level, who has the time to track this and update this?  
The integration with NetSuite is seamless.  The bundle installation puts the relvant information for users right into NetSuite.  The bundle adds easy to use buttons for address validation on the proper forms.  Sales tax calcualtions are accesible on quotes, sales orders, and final invoices.  Also, Avalara could not make it any easier to track and monitor valid sales and use tax exemption certificates.  They have included the former CertCapture into the central solution as ECM - exemption certificate management.  
I will also add that for companies that will use the tax filing services, the seamless flow of transactions into the Admin portal and the ability to have Avalara file your returns electronically can't be beat.  The wealth of reports available means I can always get the infomration I need in an instant.

I find this comprehensive service offering to be second to none.  Need help with Voluntary Disclosure Agreements (VDA)?  They do that.  
Need to register with State Secretaries of State and get  business license?  They do that. 
Need a nexus study?  They do that?  
Can't find an Avatax code for your items for sale?  They can help.
I often find that clients that learn about Avalara and understand the risks of not having this seamless level of complance, quickly see the value and decide to use it.

We work on more ERP systems than just NetSuite.  It'd be cool if the software worked as well with NetSuite as Sage Intacct and others.

Avalara is making compliance seamless for our clients by electronically filing our returns on a timely basis.  Our clients are able to grow without the need to hire a commensurate number of tax specialists.  Also, we see Avalara supporting clients and helping them in the rare chance something goes awry.

At first, it was great at calculating sales tax.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Getting support for billing issues or complex technical issues is like getting blood out of a stone.

We started using Avatax in 2019.  It worked well to start and it was included in our Bigcommerce plan.  We used to have an account manager, but then we were moved to the generic account manager group and we could never get a person to speak with. 

We hit nexus with a few states in 2020 and 21 and had Avalara file those returns for us.  This was when our issues began.  At first, returns with Bigcommerce were $35 each.  I received two invoices one for $35 a return and another for $55 a return.  I ended up being charged both invoices and it took months to get a refund.  

In 2022 we began using ShipperHQ for shipping quotes.  AFter being prompted in our BC store to update avatax we began noticing that sales tax wasn't being calculated.  I reached out to BC who said it was Avalara's issue and Avalara said it was BC's issue.  This went on for more than a month.  Finally, after being vocal in a Facebook BC group Avalar reached out.  I had made more calls and sent more emails than I can count trying to get this resolved.  I eventually was connected with a customer service manager who then setup a zoom with their developers. They finally figured out the issue was their connector and it was eventually resolved.

We also decided to use Avalara to report sales tax for our home state and used the Square POS integration.  We purchased the smallest number of transactions as we have a very small amount of in-person transactions.  However, as we also used square on out BC store it began to count our e-commerce transactions too and we kept being billed for overages, which were a nightmare to get refunded.

Bigcommerce removed the avalara benefit with their plan and we had to pay per transaction.  I have no issue with this, but again we were invoiced for overuse when we hadn't hit those limits.

They make you purchase returns up front for one year.  In an exit call last week I was advised by one of their staff that I could have purchased returns as I needed them.  NOBODY TOLD ME THAT!  We purchased returns for a year.  States then reached out reducing our filing frequency so we were stuck with returns that expire a year after purchase and cannot be refunded.

Last month I spent hours trying to reconcile transactions and found the discrepancy was due to a duplicate transaction.

We used it for sales tax calculation. Worked well to start but have had billing issues every year for the last two or three years.

Avalara has converted a disjointed, siloed process owned by various groups to an coordinated, centrally managed sales tax solution. The technology is flexible to bring multiple billing systems into a tool that is easy to use with accurate calculations.

With a multitude of billing connectors, upgrades are sometimes difficult to navigate so it is important to leverage IT personnel to assist.

Customer service is terrible.  They set up my account incorrectly, and I've spent months trying to fix the problem, and it still doesn't work properly.  Even worse, the error they made means our API calls are massive, so they are charging me thousands of dollars a month for the privilage of having an issue they caused.

Avalara calculates my sales tax, but as it's impossible to work out why it's not working properly, and you get no support from customer services, it's useless.

The onboarding process, training, getting help from a live person you can understand without waiting a couple days to get the response, that is what I dislike. While I had an overall negative experience with Avalara, if I had to mention something positive, it would be their initial setup process. It was relatively straightforward, and their system integration was smooth at the beginning. However, this positive aspect does not outweigh the significant issues I faced with their automatic renewal policies and unhelpful customer service.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

I started using Avalara in May 2023 and have paid them around $12,000 for their services. Unfortunately, my experience with another service made me realize how inadequate Avalara is. After a year, I decided I no longer wanted to use Avalara and intended to cancel my subscription. However, I forgot to do so, and their system automatically renewed my subscription, charging me $12,000 without my permission.

When I contacted their customer service, they mentioned they had sent an email in April to discuss the renewal. This email did not mention the automatic renewal, and I missed it due to being extremely busy at the time. I contacted Avalara (possibly through the wrong channel) around May 7 to request the cancellation of my subscription. However, on May 8, they charged my credit card $12,000. This was especially surprising since I had reported that card as lost last year, yet they still managed to charge it.

When I reached out to Avalara about this, they told me they could not issue a refund due to their policy, even though I no longer use their services. This situation is incredibly frustrating and feels unlawful. Why should I lose $12,000 for a service I don’t use anymore?

I strongly advise against using Avalara. Their customer service is unhelpful, and their policies are unfair. Save your money and find a more reliable service provider.
