It has come in handy many times over the past year that I have been using their products. They have an economic nexus "hot map" that I have used to indicate when we need to register for sales & use taxes in different states. It has helped bring my attention to states nearing economic nexus, but... see dislikes. I haven't tried other products, so I can't offer a comparison. **What do you dislike about Avalara?** I have had nothing but nightmares on the Avalara VAT Returns side. Our Avalara Account Manager has no visibility into that system as if it were a separate entity with little accountability to the whole. The primary means of communicating with the Avalara VAT team is via the VAT Returns Portal. They promise to respond to messages posted within 48 hours. They rarely respond without escalating the case to the account manager, who puts in a support ticket. The support person tells the VAT team to respond to the message and redirects me to use the Portal to communicate with the team. Rinse and repeat. It is the most frustrating system. On the US side, it is helpful to query and export transactions; however, the reports are not very customizable, and the settings don't save properly. It's a starting point, but they don't provide the information needed to file with each state and come up with the same tax values as they did. When state filings require location information to determine the tax rate due, the state calculates differently than Avalara based on the same address. Typically we are short what is owed because Avalara has undercalculated the tax due on a sale. The economic nexus "hot map" always looks at the current assessment period, so if you met nexus at the end of the last evaluation period but didn't switch taxes on in time, it will not continue to show red into the next evaluation period. Be careful to manually evaluate each state that was close to reaching the economic nexus, regardless of what the hot map says. **What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?** I file and remit our sales taxes globally. Avalara helps track tax rates by location and assigns a tax rate they believe is correct. It gives us suggestions on where to register based on our sales within states and makes tax a little less painful of a process. **What do you dislike about Avalara?** As a whole, I think Avalara is a great product and worth looking into if you are looking for a solution, however that does not come without some cons that have the potential to be improved upon. The website was recently updated and while it looks nice, it is actually more time consuming to enter a customer's detail and tax exemption certificate information. Prior to the update, I could use my keyboard to make selections for the state, exemption reasons, etc, but now I have to use a combination of my mouse and keyboard which just adds time. I know there is an option to upload customers, but when you only have 1 certificate, it's more convenient to just enter directly on the site. I do wish that would be fixed. My only other gripe is that the reports you can pull that include the customer's information are not in a compatible file type, so if you have a customer with several exemption certificates that need to be updated, you either need to copy and paste the report data into a new spreadsheet to save as the correct type, or manually update each certificate (expiration dates, etc.) We found this out the hard way when using the reports, updating the data, and using the upload feature - we would get a success message once the upload completed, but found a few months later when the original expiration dates had passed that the system never truly updated. I worked with support and it was determined the type of Excel file from the website was the cause. Again, this isn't a dealbreaker for us, just a little less convenient than it could be, and still a solid product all around. **What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?** By using Avalara, we are not having to spend as much time working through the labyrinth that is sales tax compliance. Definitely makes it possible for us to report in the states where we have nexus. **What do you dislike about Avalara?** UPDATE: I have been been issued credits and have been assigned a new account manager. I am now in contact with some very helpful people at Avalara and I am hoping this bodes well for the future, so updating my review accordingly. ORIGINAL REVIEW: The customer service is absolutely abysmal. It is nearly impossible to get someone to respond to emails, and when you set up a meeting they either don't show up or arrive unprepared and swear they will follow up on your issues, then you hear nothing. For months. Our account manager is completely useless, and I have requested a new account manager and surprise surprise, no one responds to my requests. One of many examples: I canceled part of our service within the 60-day cancellation window - in March 2022 - and now, SIX MONTHS later, not only am I still paying for the service and have not received a credit, but no one at Avalara even knows how to make the billing correction! This is even though the few Avalara employees who have responded to my pleas admit that they owe me a huge credit and that I should no longer be paying for this service that I canceled long ago. Save yourself a ton of time and trouble, and go somewhere else. PLEASE ALSO NOTICE THAT ALL THE GOOD REVIEWS FOR AVALARA ARE "INCENTIVIZED REVIEWS," MEANING AVALARA HAS PAID PEOPLE TO WRITE THEM. **What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?** Would be saving us time if it weren't for the hours I spend trying to get someone to answer my questions and solve the problems that come up. **Official Response from Bobby Sands:** > Thank you for sharing your feedback.
