What do you like best about Atlan?

I love how easy it is to get access to find the answers I need using SQL. Before Atlan, I would have needed to jump through many loops to access our data. With Atlan, I can access all tables, which are organized and described clearly so that I can discover data efficiently. Atlan also makes crafting, saving, sharing, managing, and reusing SQL queries simple. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Atlan?

Nothing - even when I have had issues in the past, Atlan's team would work to resolve them quickly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Atlan?

Our data engineering team have enjoyed the ease of setup with Atlan as dbt documentation work they had already done easily surfaced to Atlan to populate the asset profile fields. Also, the asset fields automatically populated by Atlan have been very helpful in our setup process, making the information in the tool already useful for our working processes. In addition, the customer support from Atlan has been phenomenal, providing support and resources for every step of the way. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Atlan?

What I appreciate most about Atlan is its emphasis on collaboration and automation. Its ability for data discussions and annotations make it a truly collaborative platform, stimulating efficient dialogue among data teams. This increased level of collaboration often leads to enhanced data understanding and more insightful decision-making.

The platform's automation also plays a significant role in its appeal. In just a few clicks, we can automate repetitive tasks, allowing us to focus our time and energy on providing insights rather than wrestling with tedious data management tasks.

Combined with its robust data governance capabilities and comprehensive audit trails, Atlan simplifies data oversight and assists in staying compliant with data protection regulations. Overall, Atlan's dedication to fostering an easy, collaborative, and compliant data environment is what I find most compelling. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Atlan?

Despite its myriad of features, Atlan has one significant setback that can affect new users most: its onboarding process. Getting up to speed with Atlan's tools and functionalities can be quite challenging due to the steep initial learning curve. This might be attributed to its wealth of features and capabilities which, while beneficial in the long run, can overwhelm users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Atlan solving and how is that benefiting you?

Atlan has been instrumental in addressing several critical data management issues in our workflow. To begin with, as an organization with colossal volumes of data to work with, finding the right data when needed used to be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Thanks to Atlan's data catalog and discovery capabilities, we've managed to centralize our data resources, making it much easier to access and discover the right data when we need it.

When it comes to team collaboration, Atlan has been great. Before using Atlan, collaboration on data projects used to be complicated, lengthy, and prone to miscommunication. With Atlan's rich-sharing and collaborative features, all members of the team can collaborate on shared data assets, add their input, and make decisions collectively in real-time, leading to more cohesive collaboration and decision-making.

Data governance and compliance is another critical area where Atlan has proven invaluable. Atlan's automated compliance checks and comprehensive audit trails have made maintaining compliance a much more effortless process. This feature not only minimizes risks but also offers peace of mind, knowing that we are handling data ethically and responsibly.

In essence, Atlan has played a pivotal role in streamlining our data processes, promoting data democratization, ensuring compliance, and fostering better collaboration within our data teams. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Product value proposition in its extensibility to meet our evolving metadata ingestion, enrichment, and publishing requirements with relatively short time, is appealing.

Working with results oriented, adaptable customer success team is a fantastic experience. They are enthusiastic advocates and experts who recognize the benefits of metadata in data governance, data integration, data quality, and overall data management. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Atlan?

I'm responsible for building up the glossary in Atlan - the reason why we believe Atlan is a user-friendly and collaborative metadata management platform and is the perfect fit for building up our glossaries are below:

1. Definitive definitions: 1) The glossary allows users to define and document business terms and metrics, providing clear and consistent definitions to ensure a shared understanding. 2) The glossary provides contextual information, including synonyms, abbreviations, acronyms, and related terms. 3) Terms and metrics can be categorized and organized in a hierarchical structure, facilitating easy navigation and browsing based on domains, topics, or functional areas.

2. Search and Discovery: The glossary offers powerful search capabilities, enabling users to quickly find specific metrics or related information. Users can search by keyword, browse categories, ownership, or apply filters to refine their search results.

3. Data Lineage and Impact Analysis: The glossary is integrated with data lineage and impact analysis features. Users can understand how terms are used within reports, dashboards and other data assets, and trace their impact across the data ecosystem.

4. Collaboration and Annotation: Users can collaborate by adding comments, annotations, or additional context to term definitions. This encourages knowledge sharing, discussions, and alignment on the understanding of terms. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Atlan?

1) Pricing: Atlan's pricing structure may not be suitable for low budget companies, especially for small organizations or startups with limited resources. Will enterprise pricing plan in the pipeline?

2) Learning Curve: It might take some time for users to become proficient in navigating and utilizing all the functionalities effectively. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Atlan solving and how is that benefiting you?

During our implementation of the Notion glossary, we gained valuable insights and underwent a significant learning experience. However, we encountered a set of challenges that have led us to make the decision of transitioning to a more suitable tool capable of effectively serving the entire organization. Below are the key learnings we derived from this process:

1. Inadequate understanding and communication

In many cases, there is a lack of sufficient understanding regarding critical topics, particularly when it involves metrics that are defined differently across various teams. Let's consider the example of DIFM. Due to breakdowns in communication, aligning the calculations for different perspectives of net revenue took considerable time and effort.

1. Operational complexity

Given the unique nature of our business, certain metrics can be challenging to grasp, such as revenue recognition at different points in time. Additionally, there may be high entry barriers for one department to understand the metrics used by another department. Moreover, when our business model undergoes changes, there tends to be a multitude of news and updates that colleagues outside the core team or channel might not be aware of, resulting in a lack of context.

1. Lack of ownership

Colleagues often express a desire to learn more about specific metrics, but struggle to identify the appropriate team or location to access the relevant information. Complicating matters further, the search experience in Notion is suboptimal. For instance, when using a table (database), users are required to load the entire table to perform a search or add filters to narrow down their search. This limits the efficiency and ease of finding the desired metrics and related information. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Atlan?

As a mobile gaming company, we collect TONS of data. We were mainly attracted to Atlan because we needed a "source of truth" for all our data sources and a data lineage tool. Atlan has made it easy to document our rapidly growing database and reports, as well as visualize how each asset connects. Atlan has also made it possible for our non-analytical teams to search for Tableau reports and query our database without SQL coding skills.

We especially love how easy it was to get Atlan up and running. It integrated with all our existing tools (Slack, Jira, Tableau, Snowflake, etc.), and the Atlan team has been with us at every step. The customer service has been phenomenal -- even post-set-up. Shoutout to Steven for creating personalized tutorial videos for us! Thank you! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Atlan?

Just a few bugs here and there, but Atlan's support team has been extremely responsive and helpful! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Atlan solving and how is that benefiting you?

Data governance, data lineage, documentation. Atlan has saved our analytics team so much time and energy by acting as a "source of truth"! We're able to focus on our own tasks rather than performing simple queries for other teams. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Atlan?

As a data engineer, I've been particularly impressed by Atlan's ability to easily integrate metadata generated by dbt and custom metadata. The integration with GitHub has also been beneficial, allowing for seamless collaboration between team members on data projects. I've found that the visual representation of lineage has been precious in understanding how data flows through the system, and seeing the complete lineage at a glance is a significant time-saver. Additionally, I've had a very positive experience with the integration between Atlan and dbt, which has been reliable and straightforward to use. Overall, Atlan has made collaborative metadata management a breeze, and I would highly recommend it to other data engineers looking to streamline their data management processes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Atlan?

One area that could be improved with Atlan is the website speed. Unfortunately, I've found that the majority of the time, the website is quite slow. This can be frustrating when trying to complete tasks efficiently, and I hope that Atlan can address this issue in the future to improve the user experience. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Atlan solving and how is that benefiting you?

Atlan has been a tremendous asset in my work as a data engineer, providing several key benefits that have helped streamline my workflow. One of the most significant advantages of using Atlan is that it makes it much easier to share information about the tables generated with anyone, even those who may not have a deep understanding of data structures. Additionally, the custom metadata feature has been invaluable in showcasing when tables are updated and the frequency of these updates. Finally, being able to quickly identify the resources affected in any workflow has saved me significant time and effort when troubleshooting. Overall, Atlan's collaborative metadata management has made my work more efficient and effective, allowing me to focus on other important tasks. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Atlan?

The search option for looking up data sources/fields is beneficial. I believe this is the most used resource due to the data in our databases. The ability to add definitions to the fields ensures the correct data source is selected. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Atlan?

Atlan has a lot to offer, but knowing what all Atlan can be used for is challenging. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Atlan solving and how is that benefiting you?

Atlan solves the issues of locating data tables and fields. The search ability helps users find the proper data source to complete their job functions without depending on a specific team to point them to the correct source. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Atlan?

Atlan was created by data engineers for data engineers. Utilizing Atlan's integration with Reshift, Aurora and Tableau provided us with rich data and metadata insight, allowed for a super fast impact analysis using lineage, and eliminated the need to document data changes manually. Atlan allowed us to create a centralized place for business analysts to find information about company data, definitions and metrics, glossary, and project documentation. The interface is simple and very intuitive, so minimal training is required. Atlan is excellent as an onboarding tool for business and data people alike. Their APIs are easy to use and well-documented, and Google-like search makes finding data assets easy. All these features provided immense value to our users. Overall, Atlan has drastically reduced our workload in organizing data and metadata as a single source of truth. And lastly (and most importantly), Atlan has outstanding customer service; it has been with us every step of the way during the initial implementation and continues to support us with adopting the tool. They listen to their customers and address any issues very quickly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Atlan?

There is nothing to dislike about Atlan, as the business specifics drive some of our challenges. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Atlan solving and how is that benefiting you?

Atlan helped us democratize our data. The data team receives many requests from business teams across the organization. Atlan helped us put the data in their hands, enabling them to be independent.

Atlan also became a true home for the data team, increasing our productivity by reducing the time needed for impact analysis, training and onboarding Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Atlan?

Atlan reduces the time developers spend understanding context of their data assets. It gives data producers a platform to document and a place for consumers to learn and understand data. The platform is intuitive and integrates with our existing application ecosystem. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Atlan?

There is nothing I dislike about Atlan. One downside of the product is switching from your data model, database, or BI layer to the Atlan UI to get more information about the data. Having Atlan embedded within the BI layer would be helpful and is already being worked on/available. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Atlan solving and how is that benefiting you?

- Reduces time developers spend understanding context of data - this allows us to generate more meaningful ETL more quickly and allows us to have a better handle of our data assets

- Allows consumers to get closer to the data and understand it more easily with data definitions, query preview, glossaries, etc - this allows requirements to be more specific Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
