## About Arbor Edge Defense
NETSCOUT® Arbor Edge Defense (AED) is a DDoS protection appliance designed to help organizations protect their networks from evolving Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and other advanced cyber threats. Positioned strategically at the network edge, between the internet router and the firewall, AED serves as both the first and last line of defense against malicious activities. This inline, always-on solution is essential for organizations facing a landscape of increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, including ransomware, phishing attempts, and compromised Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The ideal Arbor Edge Defense customers are organizations of all sizes that require robust protection against a variety of cyber threats. Security teams are often tasked with defending against a multitude of attack vectors that continuously evolve to bypass traditional security measures. AED is designed to meet these challenges by providing dynamic protection that adapts to changing attack methodologies. Its integration capabilities allow it to seamlessly fit into an organization’s existing security stack, thereby reducing complexity and associated costs while enhancing overall security posture. One of the key features of Arbor Edge Defense is its use of stateless artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) powered packet processing. This technology enables AED to analyze traffic in real-time, automatically identifying and mitigating inbound DDoS attacks before they can impact network performance. Additionally, AED can detect and block outbound communications from compromised internal devices attempting to connect with threat actor command and control (C2) infrastructure. This dual capability not only protects the network from external threats but also prevents the internal exploitation of devices. Another significant aspect of AED is the Arbor Enterprise Manager, which provides a centralized and scalable console for managing multiple AED deployments. This single-pane-of-glass interface simplifies the monitoring and management of security events across the organization, allowing security teams to respond more effectively to incidents. By consolidating functionality and providing comprehensive visibility, Arbor Edge Defense enhances an organization’s ability to maintain a proactive security posture against the backdrop of an ever-evolving threat landscape.

## Arbor Edge Defense Reviews
  ### 1. Best DDoS solution at the moment

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rodrigo M. | Vendor Business Manager - Security Solutions, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 16, 2025

**What do you like best about Arbor Edge Defense?**

The Arbor Edge Defense (AED) acts as a "first line of defense" that blocks DDoS attacks and inbound/outbound threats at the network edge, without relying on state (stateless).

It uses real-time global intelligence to disrupt malware and botnet communications, alleviating the load on firewalls and ensuring full availability of services.

**What do you dislike about Arbor Edge Defense?**

The operational rigidity and high maintenance cost are negative points: both the interface and the configuration logic are aimed at network specialists, which makes the learning curve quite steep and tiring for those without experience in the area. Additionally, the equipment requires continuous management of updates and policies, since, being an edge device, any configuration error can result in undue blocks (false positives) in the company's critical services.

**What problems is Arbor Edge Defense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The Arbor Edge Defense (AED) acts as a "shield" at the network edge, blocking DDoS attacks and malware communications before they reach and overwhelm your firewalls.

It uses stateless packet inspection and global intelligence to ensure that only legitimate traffic enters the company, maintaining service availability without downtime.

  ### 2. AED

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bruno O. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 24, 2025

**What do you like best about Arbor Edge Defense?**

AED delivers always-on, inline AI/ML-driven DDoS protection at the network edge (between router and firewall), stopping both inbound and outbound threats automatically with high accuracy .

It reduces load on downstream firewalls, IDS/IPS, and WAFs by up to 80%, thanks to its stateless packet processing and large blocking capacity (≈ 60× firewall) .

Real users praise its ease of use, immediate visibility, and effectiveness in blocking volumetric and non-volumetric attacks in real time .

**What do you dislike about Arbor Edge Defense?**

Initial configuration and fine-tuning can be complex—especially adapting to diverse network environments; some users report limited advanced configuration options .

AED management requires pairing with Arbor Enterprise Manager (AEM), which some reviewers find poorly integrated and fragmented in experience .

**What problems is Arbor Edge Defense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

First & Last Line of Defense: Positioned at the network edge, AED blocks inbound DDoS attacks (volumetric, TCP exhaust, app-layer) and outbound communication from compromised hosts via ATLAS threat intelligence .

Adaptive, Hybrid Protection: Uses real-time global threat intelligence (ATLAS IC feeds) and AI/ML to adapt to evolving, multi-vector DDoS attacks; cloud signaling routes massive attacks to Arbor Cloud as needed .

Threat Blocking & Context: Prevents internal hosts from communicating with known malicious IPs/domains; provides rich attack context for faster threat investigation .

Operational Efficiency: Offloads traffic filtering from stateful security devices, extending their lifespan and efficiency, while scaling to high-throughput operations .

Integration & Flexibility: Robust REST API, STIX/TAXII, Syslog support allow seamless integration into existing SOC/NOC workflows and orchestration environments (SDN/NFV enabled) .

Hybrid & Virtual Cloud Support: Offers virtual AED (vAED) deployments for AWS or hybrid environments to secure cloud-facing assets consistently .

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 22, 2025

**What do you like best about Arbor Edge Defense?**

The ease with which my colleagues and I are able to identify endpoints that are communicating with nodes in geoblocked countries is a significant benefit. Another benefit is the thoroughness of the training we have received on the platform. NetScout training has been extensive and helped our team to better utilize the platforms' complete capabilities.

**What do you dislike about Arbor Edge Defense?**

One thing to dislike about AED is the way that AEM appears to initially present as a separate tool. I understand that AED and AEM are paired, but I feel the platforms could be unified to work together instead of presenting as separate portals. The management of the AEDs should be able to be integrated into the same system.

**What problems is Arbor Edge Defense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Identification of communications to geo-blocked countries and Network Intrusion Protection.
