## Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling Reviews
  ### 1. Indispensable feature for EC2 management and high traffic requirements

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Luca P. | Chief Operations Officer DEQUA Studio | Formerly CTO in MarTech, Marketing and Advertising, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

The architecture of Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling is built around a powerful set of features that provide exceptional control and automation for managing compute capacity.

Its capabilities for dynamic scaling are particularly impressive. The service offers a choice between several scaling policy types, including target tracking, step scaling, and simple scaling, which allows for a highly tailored response to workload fluctuations.

For example, the ability to configure target tracking scaling based on a custom Amazon CloudWatch metric, like the length of a processing queue, offers a far more accurate way to manage capacity compared to relying solely on generic metrics like CPU utilization. This ensures that resources are scaled based on the true demand of the application.

The seamless integration with CloudWatch for triggering these policies provides a robust and responsive mechanism for maintaining steady, predictable performance under varying load conditions.

Another standout feature is predictive scaling, which leverages machine learning algorithms to forecast demand based on historical data. For applications with cyclical or predictable traffic patterns, this proactive approach to capacity management is incredibly effective. It allows the system to provision the necessary EC2 instances before an anticipated traffic increase occurs, effectively eliminating the ramp-up time associated with reactive scaling and ensuring a smooth user experience during peak periods.

The service provides a forecast that can be reviewed and then used to automatically create a scaling schedule, giving a perfect balance of automation and control. This forward-looking approach helps optimize costs by preventing the need for sustained over-provisioning.

The fleet management and self-healing capabilities are fundamental to building resilient and fault-tolerant systems. EC2 Auto Scaling continuously performs health checks on all instances within a group.

If an instance fails a health check, the service automatically terminates it and launches a new one to take its place, ensuring the desired capacity is always maintained.
This automated recovery process is critical for high availability and removes a significant operational burden from engineering teams. It transforms a potentially service-impacting event into a non-issue that is handled without any manual intervention, which is invaluable for maintaining service level objectives.

Finally, the use of Launch Templates for defining instance configurations brings a much-needed level of discipline and flexibility to infrastructure management. Launch Templates support versioning, which makes it straightforward to iterate on configurations, such as testing a new Amazon Machine Image (AMI) or a different instance type. A new version can be created and tested in isolation before being rolled out to production.

The Instance Refresh feature complements this by enabling controlled, rolling updates across the entire fleet, which minimizes risk and prevents downtime during deployments. The ability to quickly roll back to a previous, known-good version of a launch template provides a critical safety net, making the entire process of updating infrastructure safer and more predictable.

**What do you dislike about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

I believe the main point of friction with EC2 Auto Scaling is its steep initial learning curve. While the concept is simple, achieving an optimal and cost-efficient configuration can be a complex undertaking, especially for those new to the AWS ecosystem.

I found that it requires a solid understanding of not just Auto Scaling itself, but also of interconnected services like CloudWatch, Identity and Access Management (IAM), and Elastic Load Balancing.

Fine-tuning the scaling policies, selecting the most appropriate metrics to monitor, and setting the right thresholds often involves a period of trial and error that can be both time-consuming and intimidating.

**What problems is Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling solving and how is that benefiting you?**

EC2 Auto Scaling directly solved several critical operational challenges. It eliminated the difficult choice between over-provisioning for peak traffic and risking performance degradation, providing the elasticity to match our compute capacity precisely with real-time demand.

This automated approach also introduced a self-healing capability to our infrastructure, automatically replacing unhealthy instances to significantly improve uptime and resilience without manual intervention.

Finally, it streamlined our deployment process, transforming risky manual updates into controlled, automated rollouts with built-in safety mechanisms, which de-risked our entire release cycle.

  ### 12. Your 2nd step in handling variable load

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 10, 2020

**What do you like best about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

Once you have an application that is working, a few more clicks can allow you to scale up and down according to load, optimizing your costs and providing a great user experience. The easiest way is creating an AMI off the existing instance that provides your service and then configure the corresponding AutoScaling Group to use it to launch new instances when specific metrics are reached or remove instance when they drop below specific thresholds. And that is just the beginning, you can continue to optimize for both performance and costs the more you learn about this service.

**What do you dislike about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

If you are just starting, there are a lot of caveats as to how to best implement proper autoscaling with what you already have. You need to be very careful with stateful services/requests and your architecture needs to allow for servers to appear and disappear. You will also need to review your deployment processes to make sure that all your instances are running the same code or instrument more complex workflows to update AMIs or configure instance as they are created (using Puppet/Chef/Ansible)

**Recommendations to others considering Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling:**

Don't try to take advantage of all its features and integrations at the same time. Implement some basic usage first and then iterate on that to add more and more functionality as you test and confirm that everything is working as you expect. You also need to make sure that you document and - as much as possible - automate your setup, so that it is reproducible in case you need to start over or need to make a very invasive change. You can always create a completely new AutoScaling Group that is independent from what you currently have, test whatever change you want there and still integrate it with your existing AutoScaling Groups as you see fit.

**What problems is Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling solving and how is that benefiting you?**

You can accommodate your infrastructure according to expected/measured load on your service. There is no need to have a lot of servers running idle "just in case" you have a spike of traffic. And once you have a basic setup that works, you can continue to refine it and tailor it to your service and use case. There are a lot of other AWS services that can integrate with AutoScaling to take your infrastructure to the next level: Spot Instances, Fleets for mixed instances, CloudWatch alarms, etc.

  ### 13. Easy to use instance scaling for small/simple usage

  ### 14. Just short of perfect, only for the learning curve

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matthew J C. | Co-Founder & CTO, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2019

**What do you like best about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

The ability to keep balance, monitor, and replace instances and it ensures that it always has the most computing power distributed to the closest availability zones.

**What do you dislike about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

The learning curve, it is probably best to get AWS certified even at the minimum available certificate. There are tons of resources, but to really maximize the usability of EC2 Auto Scaling you really have to be familiar and "get your bearings" around AWS as a whole.

**Recommendations to others considering Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling:**

Be prepared for a learning curve, however, there are tons of resources. Also, make sure you utilize support whether it be the documentation or live support because it is worth it.

**What problems is Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The ability manage with 3 different types of Scaling. Dynamic is curve by curve management you can monitor usage, Scheduled I have not used, but I imagine in some use cases it would be helpful. But the best that helps our app the most is the use of Predictive Scaling. Using Machine Learning, it can learn your app, your users, and therefore predict what the computing power required will be.

  ### 15. Huge help for enterprise architecture.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Morgan G. | Senior Software Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2019

**What do you like best about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

Auto Scaling for EC2 instances saves our company lots of time. You can just simply configure a template and then set up auto scaling group with the configuration. You don't have to worry about the rest of it. It will automatically scale up EC2 instances if workload get heavier and scale down if workload get lighter. You can set up the metrics for scaling up and down. Such as setting CPU utilization to greater than 80 percent or lower than 10 percent. It saves money and time and trouble. If you need lots of computing power and it goes up and down, you should consider auto scaling group.

**What do you dislike about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

I have not found anything I don't like yet.

**Recommendations to others considering Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling:**

If your company need lots of computing power and it varies in different time, you should consider using auto scaling group,

**What problems is Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I don't have to manually add or take EC2 instances. It saves a lot of time and money.

  ### 16. Straightforward, but deep inside the AWS ecosystem

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Austin C. | Solutions Architect, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 22, 2019

**What do you like best about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

The autoscaling system is easy to use and is integrated into everything.

**What do you dislike about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

To use the autoscaling system pretty much everything you do has to be implemented in AWS.

**Recommendations to others considering Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling:**

It's definitely a commitment to use EC2 auto scaling. You have to make sure your instances are all configured for easy scaling up and down, and get all of that configuration into the AWS cloud using launch configurations and AMIs. This will require that you be pretty committed to the AWS ecosystem. So, if you're looking for a service you can use while still remaining cloud agnostic or avoiding other cloud activity, this may be difficult to take advantage of. But, if you're willing to go all in or you're already in the AWS ecosystem, then this is an excellent service that you should be using.

**What problems is Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use EC2 autoscaling to support dynamic scaling up and down of apps and services that have bursty or inconsistent load.

  ### 17. Good horizontal scaling but lacks vertical scaling for stateful applications.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Farhad S. | Cloud Infrastructure Head, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2019

**What do you like best about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

Works great and seamlessly for horizontal scaling (increasing number of VMs based on metrics like CPU, memory, etc.)

**What do you dislike about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

Lack of support for vertical scaling (increase CPU and memory for same VM) for stateful application.
Scaling down with horizontal scaling is unpredicatable. AWS EC2 autoscaling does offer some termination policies like oldest instance, newest instance, etc. but this still does not guarantee that the instance being terminated is not doing some task. There should be a feedback capability provided between instances and AWS EC2 autoscaling (similar to what kubernetes provides).

**Recommendations to others considering Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling:**

Good for simple horizontal scaling for stateless applications.
I would like to see additional features for controlled scaling down.
I would also like to see support for vertical scaling (preferably non disruptive).

**What problems is Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Seamless scaling for stateless applications.

  ### 18. Simple and easy to setup

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Evgeny B. | CEO, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2019

**What do you like best about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

The simplicity of interface, which nonetheless allows to setup everything you need to autoscale. It is fast enough and reliable

**What do you dislike about Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling?**

It would be better to have a metric like an app performance as New Relic has, so you could scale based on that metric. It is not fully related to that product, but the absence of that metric its the only thing I don't like about it.

**Recommendations to others considering Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling:**

If you are already using AWS it is the way to go. If not, make sure that other AWS services fit you well, as they are all interconnected.

**What problems is Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Saving money while traffic is low and quickly adding service as it spikes. As well it improved availability of our application(less money lost).

  ### 19. Used Auto-Scalling for more than 3 months
