Ably have also been extremely helpful, proactive and collaborative in working with us over several years of partnership now, always friendly faces that are ready to help us out. **What do you dislike about Ably Realtime?** Honestly there's very little we haven't enjoyed about our work with Ably to date, perhaps the only minor gripe is that when we onboarded Ably they hadn't yet built out some of the plug-and-play application examples we could've made use of (ie a realtime chat client), but they've added a lot more since then, and with the ease of integration it didn't take us too long to roll our own - I encourage Ably to keep building more customisable off-the-shelf solutions to accelerate value for your customers! **What problems is Ably Realtime solving and how is that benefiting you?** Delivering a realtime pub-sub infrastructure for us unlocked the ability to offer real time, multi-person group chat and feed functionality within our platform that would've taken us months to roll ourselves, and reduces cost of maintaining such a solution. For our end-users, who rely on our product as their primary means of communication on a continual basis, the most important feature of Ably is its incredible speed and reliability across many geographies. For our developers, the most important feature of Ably has been its ease of integration into many mobile platforms and servers (iOS, web, linux) using many different programming languages (Swift, Javascript, Go). The Ably SDKs are well documented and easy to use, and the implementation behaves exactly as expected from the docs. We have been delighted with the support provided by the Ably team, who are available seemingly day and night. And the few times we've had questions in their off hours, the Ably community on Discord has been very helpful. Last but certainly not least, we were able to develop our entire app and test it with users in production environments before we ever committed to a paid contract with Ably. This allowed us to fully explore the platform without the time pressure of a "free trial period." As an open-source provider on a shoestring budget, this set Ably well apart from other providers we looked at. **What do you dislike about Ably Realtime?** Our only complaint has been the lack of a comprehensive glossary/index to all the SDK docs. There is an incredible wealth of documentation available, but because of the specialized vocabulary, it's not always easy to know what to search for. Luckily, the Ably support team - which chats with you in real time when you submit a question - is always able to point you in the right direction. **What problems is Ably Realtime solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our product services the non-verbal community, enabling users who can't speak to participate in spoken conversations by typing their part and having their typing show up in real time on the devices of speaking participants. Our most critical business need is for every single keystroke to appear instantly (and reliably) on the screens of multiple participants spread over many geographies. Ably excels at this kind of realtime delivery of small packets of information. Without this speed and reliability, our users could not communicate effectively. ### 5. I'd highly recommend Ably to anyone looking to remove the hassle of implementing websocket connection, allowing for more time to focus on building fast reliable products. **What do you dislike about Ably Realtime?** The analytical data you get out could be improved, however I know there is something in the works from that on their end as we speak. **What problems is Ably Realtime solving and how is that benefiting you?** Ably solves the problem of implementing the infastructure to delivery millions of realtime messages at sudden spikes. Our platform has a very diverse use and can go from extreemly quiet, to extreemly busy. We decided to go with Ably years ago to avoid having to build or manage it ourselves. It was very easy to set up and reasonable when it came to pricing, so we decided to go for "buy" rather than "build. Years later, we still use Ably for all push notifications. Initially, we thought we'd use Ably until the cost started to increase and it would be worth managing the push notification service ourselves. But the fact that we don't have to worry about them, and that the price increase due to increased traffic has been reasonable has made it that it's still not a priority Today. **What do you dislike about Ably Realtime?** Of course, we'd love to see lower prices, but the ease of mind we get for it makes it worth the money. **What problems is Ably Realtime solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our application has many async processes as they often take a fair amount of time (optimization problems, data processing) or are related to real time events. The dev console has also been helpful with troubleshooting during our build phases. Moreover, the Ably team has been super responsive and quick to answer any questions we have about our tech solutions with Ably. They have guided us effectively. I’m also very impressed at how Ryan Landes has been effective at facilitating every discussion and quick to setup meetings with the right people to help us move quickly. It's stable, scalable, very easy to use, well documented, and it evolves constantly. The console application makes setting up integrations to cloud services very easy (we use AWS). Client libraries are performant, and we didn’t have any problems with them (we used JS/Java/Go clients). We didn’t use much customer support, but when we did, they were responsive, and helped us solve issues with ease. When we decided to switch to a real-time provider instead of our in-house websocket solution we first landed at Pusher, which we very quickly felt like we outgrew. The lack of message retention in Pusher was a dealbreaker for us, but ably solved this problem in just a few lines of code. Ably support is always quick to respond and not afraid to give technical answers, something I as a developer highly appreciates. When you talk to Ablys support you understand that you're actually talking to someone that knows the system they're supporting, rather than someone just reading the manual back to you. **What do you dislike about Ably Realtime?** A more advanced "dev console" environment would be of big help to me as a frontend/app developer. It is now always convenient or possible to wait for the backend dev to implement the real-time solution, so being able to quickly send out mock data saves a lot of time and headaches. **What problems is Ably Realtime solving and how is that benefiting you?** We replaced an in-house developed Websocket solution with Ably and freed up a lot of time for both development and support. ### 33. Before adopting Ably, we have made widely comparison among similar messaging facility providers. We eventually choose Ably, since it is not only better in overall score of comparing items, but also in comportable support attitude when we are contacting them for trial during evaluating. During our product inegrating with Ably, we feel that Ably is worth adopting in these aspects particularly: (1) It has sincerely designed client library sdk, especially in Java and JS, flexible and comprehensive. And it has detailed and easy-to-read sdk API documentation, kinds of tutorials, FAQs, experiece sharing and so on. (2) Its technical performance is consistent with its description. Its capacity is still under rapidly expanding, its promised profits of latency, ordering, delivery, reliablity and availablity is still kept. (3) It has timely support, actively communication for problem reproducing and trouble-shooting. **What do you dislike about Ably Realtime?** Acutally Ably has no aspects that we very dislike. Each prodcut has its own short-comings, but we wish Ably could improve and become better. We will feel that the handling of ably connection and channels failure and recovery is a little complex. And the message transmission time will be not very stable when transient publish is used. Since we could not track and control internal message routing inside Ably, we sitll has the worry if Ably could ensure its stability along time, when it expands further in future. Connection management is not simple, so you should be careful when designing your Ably channels naming strategy. For almost three years, we have been using Ably for this and Realtime for checking our occupancy in the channels or getting metrics usage. During this time, both sides (Ably and Split) have had challenges regarding the amount of data sent, escalation, adding improvements, etc. I like the engagement of Ably team on these topics. You always respond fast, and you have been proactively having sessions with us on some sort of recommendations or getting feedback from our experience using Ably. **What do you dislike about Ably Realtime?** Nothing critical to say here. Just be careful when you update your libraries and not using the major version to that as it happened in the past :P. Typically, it's hard to get support from third-party vendors, but the turnaround on this fix was lightning fast and rock-solid. We were able to decouple the existing app from expensive DB read/writes and simply listen for published messages. The message quota limits are significant enough that we will probably never reach the limit. Ably also takes the pain out of setting up our own SQS, which is huge. The documentation is great for a basic setup. Support responses are quick with helpful information even on the Free Tier accounts. **What do you dislike about Ably Realtime?** While the documentation is great, a Google search of specific questions/issues is sparse. There is no Discord or Slack community for real-life questions. The Support page refers you to Stack Overflow, although we have found those to be mostly unhelpful. **What problems is Ably Realtime solving and how is that benefiting you?** As mentioned, we were able to decouple the application from being required to do expensive DB read/writes and simply pass messages to connected clients.
