What is prompt engineering?

Prompt engineering involves creating specific and clear instructions or queries given to AI chatbot software to generate relevant responses and outputs. These instructions are called prompts and will guide the software to come up with responses or in completing tasks. Prompt engineering is an important step in utilizing the features of large language models (LLM) effectively and ensuring they provide helpful and content.

For prompt engineering to be done correctly, a user should understand the capabilities and limitations of a large language model and how to design a prompt that will generate the desired response. It may take some experimenting with different phrases and trial-and-error. The AI chatbot software will use natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to understand the prompt and respond accordingly.

For example, for question-answering tasks, prompts should provide as much context and information as possible for the model to generate an accurate response. If you’re looking for the chatbot to assist in what to make for dinner, a prompt may look like, “Can you share a mac and cheese recipe that will feed four adults”?

Whether it's answering questions, providing recommendations, or assisting with customer service requests, prompt engineering ensures that AI chatbots deliver helpful interactions with users, enhancing their overall usability and effectiveness.
