Works for me as an alternative to MATLAB

|GNU Octave
Provides the functionality of MATLAB that I need for my projects without my having to spend an arm and a leg. The Octave developers recently provided us with a GUI-based interface that made the software even more compelling. The command line interface still exists, for those who swear by it. There is extensive online support for all experience levels, from beginners to power users. Works on all platforms - Linux, Mac and Windows.

Awesome Program to Draft Floorplans

|Sweet Home 3D
I will be the first person to admit that I do not always have the best vision or imagination when it comes to how a room is going to come together, I need to be able to play around with the design multiple times before it "feels" right. Sweet Home 3D allows for me to supplement my lack of imagination with an easy to use floor plan tool.
