I love that it is easy to use for all my PDF requirments. I can open up any PDF I have with it with ease. I also love that when I need help and support, they are just a click away. And to be honest, PDF's are everywhere I totally am constantly using it all day every day. The only real downside I've experienced is that UPDF doesn't currently support JavaScript and/or Markdown functionality in certain advanced documents. As someone who also uses this product as a TTRPG player, this makes it difficult to take advantage of the advanced features some of my 3rd party character sheets have. Dans le passé, effectuer même les modifications les plus simples sur un PDF nécessitait de dépenser plus pour une licence annuelle que ce dont j'aurais besoin pour une licence à vie pour éditer tout autre type de fichier que j'étais susceptible de rencontrer. Des choses simples comme supprimer des parties dont je n'avais pas besoin ou insérer des éléments supplémentaires dont j'avais besoin ou combiner plusieurs documents en une seule source. Je ne comprenais pas pourquoi tant de documents utilisaient ce format, si ce n'est parce qu'ils ne voulaient pas que les utilisateurs modifient leurs documents.

Quelle que soit la raison, UPDF a démocratisé les privilèges d'édition de PDF. D'accord, ce n'est pas gratuit, mais le prix est suffisamment bas pour le mettre au même niveau que ce que je paie pour quelques mois d'un service de streaming vidéo, ou un paiement mensuel pour un service cellulaire. You will find on YouTube, for example, many videos discussing this software. However, they are generally created by people who are not in prepress, who have only a basic use of Acrobat, and who are amazed that they can edit PDFs ;-)

My perspective will therefore be a bit different; it will reflect my expectations regarding a replacement for Acrobat DC.

Is UPDF a direct challenger to Adobe Acrobat DC?

First and foremost, it is an excellent PDF viewer. It allows for editing, converting, modifying PDFs, making comments, adding a signature to files, or setting a password… Since it has this competitor, it makes sense that it does everything Acrobat DC does, but better, more easily, and more quickly; this is true, but for everyday use. It is clearly better than Adobe's software, which has recently upset its users by imposing almost a new interface that has convinced no one. For example, modifying a PDF is instantaneous, efficient, simple… not completely cumbersome as we are used to.

You can feel that this application benefits from a recent creation, that the code behind it does not include generations of successive versions, bugs, etc., like Acrobat DC; this translates into unparalleled efficiency, combined with a current and effective interface.

This software is simple, comprehensive, lightweight (135 MB), multiplatform (MacOS, Windows, Android, iOS) with the possibility of storing documents online (10 GB), with an interface that leaves its competitors far behind (hem, not difficult). The subscription or lifetime purchase allows it to be used on 4 platforms simultaneously; the free version leaves small watermarks on the pages with the UPDF logo and allows limited AI use to 2 per day, provided you register on the UPDF platform. I tested the OCR and the AI summarization; the OCR is exceptional compared to Acrobat DC. The summary seemed to me to be on par with all its competitors. To be clear, the OCR is worth, for me, the purchase of the software. I did a comparison test with Acrobat DC, and it is incomparable on a poorly readable text… the AI makes the difference. The AI also allows explaining a word or a phrase - which is less groundbreaking, except for more educational use. It seems that students are a target audience for UPDF. For example, it allows including mind maps.

For the record, the text summarization AI also exists in Adobe Acrobat DC, as a paid add-on.

Purchasing the software with a lifetime license is the most interesting option: around sixty euros depending on frequent promotions from promotional articles, otherwise €80. The AI module is €70/year.

If I push the comparison with DC as planned, the very powerful features of the latter, such as automatic file management through automation (action assistant), Javascript integration, certified digital signatures, and all the prepress aspects, as well as bookmarks… are not present. Fast to use, for example, writing text and quickly changing the size of the text, it just takes a double click to start typing text, one click on the text to open its settings (colour, font, text size), and one click to increase/decrease font size by 2 points, or manually type in font size. The AI features that cannot be disabled. I can choose whether I want to use it, but it will always remain in the right sidebar despite not being subscribed to AI features.
