The standard notification settings are very well organized, I get notified for each new message, and even if I don't check the message in that moment, it still gets left "unread". It is very easy to keep track of what has been said in conversations since I last looked at the app. It somehow manages to work well for instant messaging as well as messaging that does not need to be addressed right away.
