what is the best way to follow up leads, pipeline if we don't have already a CRM?

durign last trials we have downloaded data in excel file and shared with sales teams. in next trials tehy will work directly with the software but i wonder how they can keep updated the activity/status of the leads, what's next and so on, alerts for calling, ...
