For an individual looking for a job or a company seeking applicants, these are the best practices to follow:

  • For job seekers: Adding profiles and resumes to multiple job search sites is usually best for job seekers to broaden their reach of job opportunities. One good way to expand the search for applicants is by looking at job search aggregators, which gather job postings from other sites and get paid job placements. Also, using advanced search features and job search alerts is important to save time and get better results.
  • For companies: One of the primary best practices companies should use for job search sites is ensuring that their postings are accurate and set up for success for the dozens of applicants applying. This would lessen the amount of issues candidates face from their side of things, which can translate to a more efficient hiring process for companies. Another best practice for companies is to make sure to organize, in some form, the submissions they will receive per posting and per job search site that the company is working with. Keeping track of candidates and submissions is highly important in maintaining order to try to fill the positions that the company is hiring for. 
  • For staffing firms or recruitment agencies: These are very similar to general companies looking to hire candidates; however, the main difference is that staffing firms and recruitment agencies usually will have more access to information from job search sites. So the best practices are to make sure they are keeping up with daily submissions of profiles and managing applications that come in for the targeted industry the recruiter is looking for. 

Job search websites vs. job boards

Job search websites are focused on looking into web pages and aggregating job listings from different job boards and other websites. A job search site searches through the internet to find open positions and displays them in a list using an algorithm that determines the query. These sites are not the same as job board software, which enable users to create and manage online employment marketplaces that connect employers with job seekers. A recruiter directly posts the openings to the job board on behalf of different companies who come to them looking to advertise their jobs online.
