It's more the preponderance of reviews rather than just one . If there's just one cranky review I think it's an outlier or a really bad experience one company had. But if there are 10 or more reviews that mention the same or similar things, then that could influence a buying decision. When I have bought enterprise software from the 2010s onward I have always checked message boards and review sites to find out whether there are any gotchas so that my team does not have to go through the same experience others did - but sometimes it's unavoidable and you just have to live through it.

Hello Alex,

I agree with you that one can feel more reassured when there is consensus of reviews (opinion) compared with solitary reviews. I've noticed with a few businesses on Google Reviews that have been poorly evaluated/assessed/reviewed, that there tends to be a prevalence of contributors who've only ever placed a single review - and that review is the opportunity for them to disparage that particular product/service. Of course we all want to stay alert and be aware of fake reviews, which are becoming more and more sophisticated as time goes on and can be posted in a planned, organised and distributed manner.

I actually stumbled upon an interesting link (from a contributor, Nathan House) on LinkedIn that points to a website which checks the veracity of Amazon reviews. It seems pretty good, but unfortunately it's not foolproof. Here's the link, if you're interested -

https://www.linkedin.com/posts/housenathan_informationsecurity-cybersecurity-hacking-activity-7262102335491817474-jC-T?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

This is about as relevant a question as it gets for this Community :)

I don't have any examples when it comes to software, because I've never been in a position where I was the decision maker for what's implemented at my company, but in life outside of work, I don't think I really ever make any sort of significant purchase without considering consumer reviews.

I was thinking about some of the more big-ticket items in my life, and one thing that came to mind was the entire process of getting married. My wife and I had a small, destination wedding in Hawaii, so we were completely at the mercy of reviews in terms of choosing the venue, the wedding planner, the hotel and all a million other things that go into getting married. Of course, the single biggest purchase came before any of that: the engagement ring itself. And you can be sure I used reviews to find the best place for that!

The better question for me would be: when do you NOT use reviews for buying decisions. I would probably have to rack my brain for about a week to come up with a good example 😂

Yes, I am the person who goes on vacations with a schedule in spreadsheet form.
