# Why isn't the call participant allowed to record?

It would be very nice of you if the participants can record the call, as sometimes the teachers don't, and it would be nice to have the recordings.

I am against a participant to record a ZOOM meeting, the reason being that it will slow down the meeting and may edit the videos for something undesirable by some participants. The host should share the final recording without editing to all participants

If you want to record the session to view it later you must be a host,co host or you have to take the permission from the host for recording the class. And the reason why zoom do not directly allow to record a meeting is related to the privacy issues.

Only the host or co-host are allowed to record. Participants are not allowed for security reasons.

I imagine that a key issue relating to making recordings is one of privacy law in your particular country. In Australia, we need to get express permission (from everyone in the Zoom session) to record the session.
For administrative ease, that person would be the person hosting/running the meeting, though, as others have noted, someone else can be granted that permission.
We'd also need to explain what that recording would be used for.
As a market researcher, I may wish to record a meeting for my later review or transcription, but must not allow the recording to be used by or seen by others in any way that breaches the guaranteed anonymity and privacy of the participants.
If I were someone who was generating something new that was my intellectual property, I would want to control who has a copy of that and what is done with it.
They may be happy to share, or to share in exchange for payment, or may wish not to share it, and by making the recording themselves, they retain that control.
If a teacher or academic, again, I may want to share the lesson with my students, but may want them to actually attend and pay attention. Student promises of "I'll watch it later" may follow with action, or may fall into the good intentions and not done category. So by not recording, or not allowing others to record, I may ensure more attention to my class, by requiring attendance at it.
And, in my experience, while I take notes in both live classes and from recorded classes, the ones I do live note the salient points , which I have to concentrate to identify (i.e. learn), while having the stop-start capacity of a recording makes it a less concentrated learning as I can transcribe almost every word. This takes me more time and is also a less concentrated learning experience.
A long answer to why the person hosting the meeting has the recording power and not (unless granted) other participants.

As a teacher I must renew the class to have the proof of the classes that I am where I am giving them and this in turn should demand that the students copy so that they have a subject of support material support so that they can consult at home about the classes we've been giving

Actually, in a zoom MEETING format, in the “participants” section, the primary host can give permission to an individual that allows them to record the session on their own computer. Just gotta click “Allow Record” in the menu next to that persons name. Pretty easy.

Also understandable why some teachers wouldn’t want that (which a few mentioned here). Of course there’s all kinds of third-party screen recording software that can get around that prohibition, as well.

the reason I don't let students/participants record the zoom meeting is that it is my teaching information. I can record it for my students to watch later if they want.

As a research moderator, I do not want the group particpants to have the ability to record a session. If I want them to be able to record it, I can make a participant a co-host. Or even better, I can later share the recording with them.

First of all, because he/she is just a participant and not a host. Secondly, being a call participant, probably he/she has no right to record, due to legal implications it may create. Finally, the call participant can be allowed to record once the permission for such a move is granted form the host.

You could ask the host to send you the recording so that you can go back to view it.

You need to either create them to be a co-host, or turn on the permission for participants to record.

You can transfer the host function to the participant and then they have control to record. They will not get the email however that says the recording is finished - you will get that and the link which then - you must share with the participant as well. A bit convoluted but that's how I have had to use it. BTW if they don't save the recording in the cloud - you will have that recording taking up space on your computer. Hmmm - not the best solution but that's what I have found.

The issue of recording is down to the host. As long the host though, has gained either permission or has made it known to those taking part in the meeting that it will be recorded.
