# what is the formula for calculating earned media value EMV?

I need to sell earned media value EMV to my bosses and I currently don't have a vast enough understanding of it to explain myself.

Hey Dan, great question! EMV is calculated based on 2 variables:

1. The type of post. Each piece of content starts off at a baseline EMV value based on the channel it was posted. i.e., we don't weigh a Tweet as heavily as a YouTube post.

2. Total engagement. The vast majority of EMV will come from the total amount of engagement a post receives (likes, comments, shares, etc).

While EMV is a great way to gauge performance, we also recommend tying in other community-based metrics such as community size, ambassador potency, and post frequency as these tend to be a little more actionable.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to us directly -- always happy to hop on the line!

Cheers!
